Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver,I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台),I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off,but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car,the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank?you note for helping me. Soon afterward,I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later,I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon,I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day,and the battery(电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom. “Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment,so when I got home,I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you,and it meant a lot,he said.
“Thank you”—two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much.

Larry Ritsema was out for an early morning jog around his neighborhood one day. On a quiet street, he began to feel weak. Suddenly, everything went black. Larry fell to the ground.
Less than a minute later, Tom Alguire passed by on his bicycle. He caught sight of a man lying on the roadside, so he jumped off his bike and ran over. He recognized Larry immediately, because he had been Larry’s doctor for nearly 20 years.
Dr. Tom felt for a pulse (脉搏) at first. Finding none, he began to give Larry first aid. It wouldn’t restart Larry’s heart, but it would keep the blood flowing until someone else arrived. Tom could only hope someone would come by soon, at around six o’clock in the morning on a holiday weekend. Tom couldn’t stop pressing Larry’s chest to run for help — Larry’s brain cells would die without the blood. And Tom didn’t have a cell phone with him.
Soon, a car did drive by. But the driver ignored Tom’s appeal for help. What was he going to do? Tom was very worried. Finally, another car came down the road, driven by Michael Saliot, a U.S. Coast Guard Officer. Michael wasn’t one to pass up a chance to help a person in need. He quickly dialed 911.
Doctors then found that Larry had suffered a heart attack and there were severe blockages in two of Larry’s major arteries (动脉). Only the timely arrival of Dr. Tom saved his life.
How did Dr. Tom happen to be bicycling that morning, down that quiet street? It turned out that as Tom rode, his bike chain fell off. He spent about eight minutes fitting it back; otherwise, he would have seen nothing of Larry’s problem.

B. keep Larry’s blood flowing
C. restart Larry’s pulse
D. stop Larry from bleeding
2.Why didn’t Tom call 911 for help?

FOR many young people, having to attend school with a parent would be their worst nightmare. However, Senior 1 student Li Qinmei is happy taking her father with her as long as she can go to classes. He is disabled and unable to take care of himself.
The 16-year-old country girl in Zhucheng, Shandong Province has experienced one disaster after another in her short life. Li lost her mother at three. Four years later, her father became paralyzed after a tractor accident. At 12, her misfortune returned with the death of her grandma. Since then she has been forced to shoulder all the responsibility for her broken family.

Li's hard work paid off this fall. She was admitted by Zhucheng No 1 High School, a local key school, based on her good performance in the entrance exams.

Once in a while, Li felt sad when she saw her classmates going shopping or hanging out with friends.
"I envy them sometimes because they have both mum and dad to look after them. However, I soon feel relieved as I still have my dad with me," she said.
Li admitted that the difficulties in life had taught her to be strong.
"I believe I will go on and continue my studies at a good university," she said, in a confident tone.
Her teacher Mr. Wang has the same belief. Li made great progress in the recent monthly exams. "She works hard and is always eager to excel. It's not easy for her never to be late for school, but she has managed to make it work," Wang said.

Venice,Italy:The Venice Tide Barrier Project will be the largest flood prevention project in the world. The project has been debated in one form or another for over 40 years as a way to protect this historical city-on-the-water for future generations. With Venice slowly sinking, and the water around it slowly rising, and floods always a fear,Italians have known for a long time that something needs to be done. Finally, the Prime Minister of Italy approved the second phase of the plan, including 80 hinged barriers(用铰链连接的壁垒),each approximately 6,500 square feet.
Millau,France:The Millau Viaduct(米洛高架桥)is the highest bridge in the world. At 1,125 feet high(slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower,1,063 feet)and over 8,000 feet long,it sometimes sits above the cloud line. The engineered wonder of the bridge itself is nearly as amazing as the view of the valley below.

Norway to Britain:The Langeled Pipeline extends(延伸)from Nyhamna,Norway,to Easington in the UK.It is about 1,200 km long and before the completion of the Nord Stream pipeline,it was the longest underwater gas pipeline in the world.Gas is exported(出口)from the Ormen Lange field, situated at a depth of 1,000 metres and located 100 km northwest of the Norwegian coast to Nyhamna. From there the Langeled Pipeline runs to Easington in the UK via the Sleipner Riser Platform in the North Sea.It will eventually supply 20% of Britain’s gas needs.

Climate change has caused a rise in sea levels. This has increased an amount of salt in fresh water used on farms near the sea.As a result farmers are unable to use fields close to the sea.Scientists call this process “salinization(盐碱化)”,which is reducing the world’s farm lands by 1 to 2 percent every year.
But a farmer in Holland,Marc Van Rijsselberghe started with an experiment, using a mixture of sea and fresh water to grow healthy and tasty vegetables. He put several kinds of plants in the fields.Mr.Van Rijsselberghe worked on the project with scientists from the Free University of Amsterdam. He divided a farm into eight areas.Every area was watered by different water.“We put in a lot of plants in the fields and then we put them in fresh water and in sea water with all the varieties(变化) between them, and then we saw which variety was surviving and which variety was dying.”A computer program created water with eight levels of salinity(盐度).Computerized measuring devices(测量仪器)controlled the water levels and the levels of salinity.
Mr.Van Rijsselberghe said he was able to harvest vegetables from most of the eight test areas. He said the vegetables were smaller than those grown in fresh water. But he said they had more sugar and salt,so they tasted better.
The farmer grew carrots, potatoes, cabbage and onions. He found that potatoes grew better than the other vegetables in the combination of sea and fresh water.Mr.Van Rijsselberghe said four kinds of these potatoes were recently sent to Pakistan, where thousands of hectares(公顷)of land have been damaged by salinization.Farmers in Pakistan will test the Dutch potatoes to see if they can be grown in those fields.
