I decided to go back to school in the fall of 2008 after not being happy with my current job and financial status. I obtained my Associate’s Degree in May 2002 in Commercial Arts. After graduation, I had trouble obtaining a job in that field. For years, I was going from one job to another feeling unfilled, and I was not satisfied with the instability. I decided to go back to school for either International Business or Psychology. I weighed the pros and cons of both professions and Psychology won. I like helping my friends and family, when they go through hard situations in their life by giving them sound advice and being honest with them. Also, I was interested in “the mind”. I was searching for online schools because my work schedule at my current job would not allow me t o attend a regular class. I was nervous about starting online classes because I heard mixed stories from other friends who were taking online classes. I decided to do it anyway to experience something different. I wanted to find an online school that was affordable and reputable. Through my search, I discovered Walden University, which is specially for working adults who want to obtain a bachelor’s degree or higher. The process of getting accepted was easy, which included writing an essay on why I wanted to attend their school, transferring my previous credits, etc. I am currently enrolled in the Bachelors program for psychology, and I am paying for college via financial-aid loans and grants. This experience has been interesting yet trying as sometimes it was difficult to balance work, school and home life. I learned a lot about psychology and myself. For example, I like writing about current events, relationships and traveling. I thought my English composition was ordinary, but after taking a few classes at Walden University, I improved my English composition and it made me feel confident enough to start writing professionally so I became a freelance (自由撰稿) writer. Currently, I am only three classes away from obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology! It was one of the best decisions I made in my life.

Steve’s Pizza

So many pizza chains compete for the attention of tourists in South Beach, but ask a Miami Beach local where to get the best pizza and they’ll tell you about Steve’s. This is New York–style pizza, handmade with care and good ingredients(成份). New branches of Steve’s are opening elsewhere in Miami, all in non-tourist areas.

Opening hours: 5pm-10pm

Absolute Baking & Cafe

The screen door is always swinging open at this town hot spot with giant breakfasts. Try the green chili on eggs – it’s made from scratch, as are the organic(有机的) breads. Lunch includes salads, big sandwiches and local grass-fed beef burgers. Don’t miss a square of soft, fresh carrot cake.

Opening hours: 7am-2pm

Walt’s Wharf

Everybody’s favorite for fresh fish (some drive in from LA), Walt’s packs them in on weekends. Ideal Body Fat Percentage

Fit men have 14% - 17% body fat.

Fit women have 21% -24% body fat.

Male athletes have 6% -13% body fat.

Female athletes have 14% - 20% body fat.

The ideal body fat percentage varies mainly according to age, sex and the physical activity of the individual. But it is a fact that some female athletes have body fat as low as 10 % and some male athletes had lower than 4% body fat. So, it can be observed that other than the above mentioned factors, genetic factors also influence the body-fat ratio.

This November, I turn 26. This will be my third birthday as a wife. My husband doesn’t like parties nor does he remember the birthdays of his family members, including his own birthday! And he always refuses the idea of celebrating birthdays. For him it is only a waste of money and time! For me, celebrating a birthday is not a big deal as long as somebody remembers my birthday and says “happy birthday” to me, which will make my day brighter. And I’m sure my parents will call me and say these words, but not my husband. In my heart I still hope that he will remember my birthday. Until now, I only remember cebelebrating my birthday twice. The first time was when I turn 12 years old. I treated my close friends to a meal in the school canteen. But I will always remember my 17th birthday. It seemed that nobody in my class talked about my birthday that day. I thought there would be no celebrating so I felt unhappy. But after the bell rang to end the class, my friends threw gifts onto my desk and said, “Happy birthday” And that day became the happiest moment I ever experienced.

The City of Christchurch, New Zealand was struck by a 7.1?magnitude earthquake on the early morning of Saturday, September 4, 2010.

No tsunami alert was reported. The country's army troops were on standby to assist victims and disaster recovery operation. New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key, flew to the affected area to inspect and assess the situation of the damaged city. The Prime Minister said that the full assessment of the damages would possibly take months to know the severity of damages. Based from his assessment on what he saw in the area, it could cost at least 2 billion New Zealand dollars or US$1.4 billion for reconstruction.

“An absolute miracle that no one died,” Prime Minister John Key said. Two were seriously injured from this quake and thousands of local residents were awakened after being shaken at 4:35 a.m. of that Saturday.

There were people trapped inside the damaged buildings but fortunately none were reported dead from the rubble of the damaged buildings.

Elephants are able to differentiate between ethnicities(种族) and sexes, and can tell an adult from a child --- all from the sound of a human voice.

This is according to a study in which researchers played voice recordings to wild African elephants.

The animals showed more fear when they heard the voices of adult Masai men.

Livestock-herding Masai people do come into conflict with elephants, and this suggests that animals have adapted to specifically listen for and avoid them.

The study is published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Prof Karen McComb and Dr Graeme Shannon from the University of Sussex led the study. They explained that in previous research they had used similar playback experiments to show that elephants could tell --- from the sound of a lion’s roar --- whether the animal was a female or a more dangerous male.

Prof McComb wanted to find out if the animals used their very sharp sense of hearing to identify a potential danger from humans.

The scientists recorded Masai men, women and children saying, in their own language, “Look, look over there, a group of elephants is coming”.

They also recorded Kamba men saying this phrase.

While cattle-herding Masai people often come across free-ranging elephants, which can result in violent conflict, the Kamba people’s more agricultural lifestyle does not generally bring them into aggressive touch with the animals.

When the team played recordings of these different voices through a hidden loudspeaker, they found that elephant family groups reacted more fearfully in response to the voice of a Masai man, than to a Kamba man’s voice.

And the adult male Masai voices encouraged far more of these defensive reactions than the voices of women or boys.

1.An elephant can tell a man from a woman by sense of ________.

A. touch B. sight C. smell D. hearing

2.How did the researchers get to know the elephants’ special ability of identification?

A. By observing the elephants in the zoo.

B. By playing voice recordings to them.

C. By recording the behaviours of elephants.

D. By communicating with them in a special way.

3.We can learn from the passage that elephants are especially afraid of ________.

A. Masai men B. Masai women

C. Kamba men D. Kamba women

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A. Elephants and human beings

B. Differences between human voices

C. Elephants recognise human voices

D. Elephants conflict with human beings
