17.Most Cancer Is Out of Our Control

LIFESTYLE OR BAD LUCK?
IT DEPENDS ON THE CANCER

BASAL-CELL CARCINOMA
The most common skin cancer is triggered by exposure to UV rays.
LUNG
Smoking,and the carcinogens in tobacco
smoke, are the main drivers of lung cancer.

LIVER
Risk of this cancer
increases with age and heavy alcohol use.

We think we know what causes cancer:smoking,the sun's UV rays,tumor-causing genes we inherit from Mom and Dad.But these factors alone can't explain why cancer in its many forms is poised to edge out heart disease as America's No.1killer within the next few years.That rise has sparked a spate of research into how much of cancer is within our control and how much of it is simply a roll of the genetic dice.
Now,in an eye-opening study published in Science,researchers report that the majority of cancer types are the result of pure chance,the product of random genetic mutations(突变) that occur when stem cells-which keep the body chugging along,replacing older cells as they die off-make mistakes copying the cells'DNA.
Cristian Tomasetti at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that the more stem cells there are in certain kinds of tissues and the more often they divide,the more likely that tissue is to develop cancer over a person's lifetime.About 65% of cancers are the result of these DNA mistakes made by stem cells.
Only a small proportion of a tissue's cells are stem cells,which are essentially templates(范本) for making more tissue.The catch is that this kind of DNA copying is also the process behind cancer,which is triggered by cells that pick up mutations in their genes when they divide.
The element of chance does not,however,mean you should stop wearing sunscreen or take up smoking."My biggest fear is that people will do nothing.The opposite is true,"says Tomasetti,who stresses that while we may not be able to prevent all tumors,we can focus on early detection and taking advantage of lifesaving treatments like chemotherapy and radiation,among other things."We need to do everything we did before,but we want to do it even more than before."

58.Most of the cancer types are caused byB.
A.bad lifestyle

C.stem cells
D.aging tissues
59.According to Tomasetti,A.

B.stem cells are essentially templates for making more tissue
C.People should stop wearing sunscreen or take up smoking
D.all tumors can be prevented through detection and radiation
60.The passage is meant toB.

15.Digital technology-email and smart phones especially-has vastly improved workers'ability to be productive outside of a traditional office.Even so,most white-collar work still happens in an office.One reason is that,according to findings of a new survey(调查)of office workers conducted by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix,most bosses are doubtful about remote working.Half of the workers say their boss doesn't accept it and only 35 ercent say it's tolerated.
Skeptical bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced ( 加深)by the same survey,which shows that 43percent of workers say they've watched TV or a movie while"working"remotely,while 35 ercent have done housework,and 28 ercent have cooked dinner.
It is true,however,that working at home makes people much more efficient,because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done.It's much faster,for example,to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work rush.
The fact that such practices remain officially unaccepted reflects how far we haven't come as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported by a full-time homemaker.
More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be missing a low-cost way to give workers something of value.Sixty-four percent of those survey participants who haven't  worked remotely would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home.Under  such circumstances,smart firms need to find ways to let their employees have enough flexibility to manage their time efficiently.

32.What does digital technology contribute to?A
A.Promoting production.
B.Hiring more white-collar workers.
C.Conducting a new research.
D.Removing bosses'doubt.
33.Why do some employers hesitate to allow remote working?A
A.To manage their workers better.
B.To stick to their routine practice.
C.To rely less on modem technology.
D.To increase face-to-face communication.
34.What seems to be most workers'attitude toward remote working?B
A.Doubtful.
B.Favorable.
C.Reserved.
D.Disapproving.
35.What does the author suggest smart firms do?C
A.Shorten their office hours.
B.Give employees a pay raise.
C.Adopt flexible work patterns.
D.Reduce their staff's workload.

13.After 10seasons wearing the No 8on his back,Kobe Bryant will become No 24next season.The reason for the surprising decision by the Los Angeles Lakers super guard last week has become a hot topic for debate.
Bryant wore No 24when he was in early high school,but he changed to No 33in his senior year.He switched to No 8when he was selected by the Lakers in 1996,and has not been changed since.
Bryant has refused to explain the decision until the end of the play-offs.So guessing Bryant's motive has become a popular game among NBA fans and newspaper columnists.
There are all kinds of speculations.Many say that Bryant wants to leave the past behind and have a fresh start.He has often been criticized for playing to benefit himself and not the team as a whole.Others say that he may be trying to compare himself to Michael Jordan.Jordan was famous for his No 23jersey.Some,such as NBC Sport columnist Michael Ventre,argue that it is"all about money".Bryant will make more money by selling new jerseys to his fans.
Some speculations are more about fun.For example,there is an opinion that Kobe is actually just a diehard fan of the popular TV drama"24".
All this talk has turned the number change into a major issue.It seems that there is a lot of fuss over something that should be pretty simple.
Jersey numbers have their own special significance in American sports,especially basketball.Players choose their number when they join a team and they usually stick with that number for the rest of their career.When a great player retires,his team will honor him by retiring his number.
To some extent,the jersey is the player,and the player is the jersey.Thus,when you see the famous No 23for the Chicago Bulls,you immediately think about Michael Jordan.A No 32Miami Heats jersey recalls the image of Shaquille O'Neal,and the Houston Rockets'No 11belongs only to Yao Ming.
Lots of stories are behind players'jersey number selections.Jordan said that he chose No 23because it was roughly half of 45.Jordan's elder brother wore the No 45in college.Yao Ming once revealed that the No 11stands for two people in love-meaning him and his girlfriend Ye Li.

78.Which team has Bryant played for?A
A.The Los Angeles Lakers.
B.The Houston rockets.
C.The Chicago Bulls
D.The Miami Heats.
79.When did Bryant start to wear No.8?A
A.Since he started to play for the Lakers.
B.For ten seasons.
C.Since he entered high school.
D.Since he left the Lakers.
80.Which of the following is NOT a speculation about Bryant's motive to change his number,according to this passage?D
A.He wants to leave his past behind and have a fresh start.
B.He wants to compare himself to Jordan.
C.He wants to earn more money.
D.He wants to show that he is a man of great importance.
81.Why did Jordan choose No.23?C
A.Because that number would make him famous.
B.Because that number would make his fans miss him.
C.Because that number was related to the number his brother once wore.
D.Because that number was easy to remember.
82.what does the number Yao Ming chose stand for?C
A.Two long legs.
B.Two strong arms.
C.Two people in love.
D.Two big countries.
