Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling.Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need.We are dealing with the results of that overconsumption in the greenest way,but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005.It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK.In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK,for example,is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt,it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect.Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place.Food waste is a serious problem, too.Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However,a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue and encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us.We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope.As more of us recycle,we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.
1.The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show .
A.the tendency of cutting household waste
B.the increase of packaging recycling
C.the rapid growth of supermarkets
D.the fact of packaging overuse
2.According to the text,recycling .
A.helps control the greenhouse effect
B.means burning packaging for energy
C.is the solution to gas shortage
D.leads to a waste of land
3.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.
B.Supermarkets care more about packaging.
C.It is improper to judge quality by packaging.
D.Other products are better packaged than food.
4.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Fighting wastefulness is difficult.
B.Needless material is mostly recycled.
C.People like collecting recyclable waste.
D.The author is proud of their consumer culture.

Too many people want others to be friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last long.To have a friend, you must learn to be one.You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you.Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules:be honest;be generous;be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friend starts.Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out that.If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust.Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes of course.Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, like your hobbies and your interests.Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you.By sharing them, you help your friend know better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem.Something may go wrong at school.Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.Turning to a friend can be the first step in solving the problem. So a friend must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity, and understanding.

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict(有瘾的人),” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me, so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled(有褶皱的).” Today David wears casual clothes (便装) to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I am working harder than ever.” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday. This became known as “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? “One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code.” “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says Owen Black, the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative (保守的) dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale (心境, 士气). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative influence on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”
1.David thinks he was “a clothes addict” because .
A. he disliked cheap clothes
B. he always kept his suit neat

A. He feels at ease.
B. He looks handsome.
C. He went to a new company.
D. He can’t afford expensive suits.
3.What can we learn from the text?
A. Casual clothes can impress others.
B. People fought for “Casual Friday”.
C. “Casual Friday” used to be popular.
D. “Casual Friday” was given as a prize.
4.What is the advantage of casual office wear?
A. Making workers more easygoing.
B. Making workers more attractive.
C. Improving workers’ ability.
D. Saving workers’ money.
5.Which does Owen Black probably agree to?
A. Comfortable clothes are cheap.
B. Nobody like conservative clothes.

It was in the Victorian Era(维多利亚时期) that the novel became the leading form of literature in English. Most writers were more concerned to meet the tastes of the middle class. The best known works of the period included the works of Charles Dickens and the Bronté sisters and others.
Charles Dickens came on the literary scene in the 1830s. Dickens wrote vividly about London life and the struggles of the poor. Most of his works were written in a very humorous style, which was popular with readers of all classes.
The Bronté sisters were English writers of the 1840s and 1850s. They began to write from early childhood. In 1846 they published the first book at their own expense as poets; however, their book attracted little attention, selling only two copies. Then the sisters turned to writing novels, each producing a novel in the following year.
An interest in rural matters and the changing social and economic situation of the countryside may be seen in the novels of Thomas Hardy and a number of others.
Literature for children developed as a single style. Some works became well-known, such as those of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Adventure novels were written for adults but are now generally grouped in the list for children. Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author at the end of the Victorian Era, best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters. In her thirties, Potter published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902.

The biggest challenge faced by travelers especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.
The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.
Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a flaw with his invention – dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.
In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two to three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What’s even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13-liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.
The best part is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!
1.What led Ash Newland to create the Scrubba Wash Bag?
A. His job requirements.
B. B. A traditional washboard.
C. His interest in invention.
D. His personal experience.
2.Why wasn’t Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention?
A. Clothes couldn’t be washed well.
B. The invention was not so convenient.
C. The bag couldn’t contain enough water.
D. The cost of the invention was very high.
3.It can be inferred that the improved Wash Pack ______.
A. turns to be much environmentally friendlier
B. will replace the traditional washing machines
C. will be widely used by more travelers in the future
D. can encourage more people to travel a long distance
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A. Introducing a great new invention.
B. Explaining the development of backpack
C. Listing some common problems for travelers.
D. Comparing two kinds of washing machines.

The loneliest chimp(黑猩猩) in the world just got the best surprise---a hug from a new friend. Ponso has been by himself for nearly three years, finding himself alone after his wife and children died on the island where they were abandoned by a medical testing company many years ago.
For years a nearby villager named Germain has been Ponso’s only company, visiting him so often to bring bananas and bread---the chimp’s only source of food on the tiny island. It was clear how much Ponso missed companionship when he was recently visited by Chimpanzee Conservation Centre Director Estelle Raballand. The chimp immediately embraced Estelle Raballand in a huge hug and laughed as she reached out for him, with his smile from ear to ear.
For those who know Ponso’s backstory, his immediate ease and trust in humans might be surprising. Ponso was one of 20 chimps, all between the ages of 7 to 11 years old, relocated to an island off the Ivory Coast after being used for testing. After the tests were completed in 2005, the lab reportedly transferred the chimps to a string of islands, occasionally dropping off food and water because there was none in the chimps’ new homes.
Disease and hunger soon left only Ponso, his mate and their two children standing. But at the end of 2013 they died within days and Ponso is now completely alone.
A group called SOS PONSO is trying to raise money for the poor lonely chimp, already achieving its goal of $20,000 ----all of which will be used for Ponso’s care.
1.What do we know about the chimp Ponso?
A. He was deserted by his family.
B. He found many sources of food.
C. He came to the island for a test.
D. He suffers from loneliness greatly.
2.How did Ponso feel about the visit of Estelle Raballand?
A. Excited. B. Frightened.
C. Embarrassed. D. Confused.
3.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The chimps’ new settlements.
B. How Ponso came to the island.
C. Why Ponso was used for a test.
D. The medical test about chimps.
4.What can be inferred from the text?
A. Germain won’t visit Ponso anymore.
B. A new lab will be built on the island.
C. Many people show concern for Ponso.
