    1．People who smoke could lose around one third of their everyday memory，researchers say．
    A study by a team at the University of Northumbria has shown that smokers lose more of their memory when compared to non-smokers．And the research also found that those who kicked the habit saw their ability to recollect information restored to almost the same level as non-smokers．
    The study involved more than seventy 18-to 25-year-old volunteers and included a tour of the university's campus．Those who took part were asked to recall（回忆；回想）small details，such as music acts listed to play at the students'union and tasks completed at various points---known as a real-world memory test．
    Smokers performed badly，remembering just 59percent of tasks．But those who had given up smoking remembered 74percent and those who had never smoked recalled 81percent of tasks．
    Dr．Tom Heffernan，who leads Northumbria University's Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group，said the findings would be useful in anti-smoking campaigns．He said，"Given that there are up to 10million smokers in the UK and as many as 45million in America，it's important to understand the effects that smoking has on everyday cognitive function．"
    This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has an effect on memory．We already know that giving up smoking has huge health benefits to the body，but this study also shows how stopping smoking can bring a series of benefits to cognitive function．The research will now investigate the effects of second-hand smoking on memory，while Dr．Heffernan will look into third-hand smoking，such as toxins （毒素） left on curtains and furniture．

    15．Robert Ballard was born in 1942．From an early age，he loved the sea．Ballard grew up in Southern California．He spent his free time at the beach near his home．He enjoyed fishing and swimming．He even learned to dive．When Ballard wasn't at the ocean，he loved reading about it．At age 10，he read 20，000Leagues Under the Sea，a book which describes the undersea adventures of Captain Nemo．Ballard decided he wanted to be like Captain Nemo when he grew up．His parents helped him follow his dream．
    Ballard was a hard-working student．He spent many years learning all he could about the ocean．By the age of 28，he was an expert．In 1970，he took a job as a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts．There he studied underwater mountains of the Atlantic Ocean．He came up with ways to predict（预知）volcanoes under the oceans．Working with other scientists，Ballard also found previously（以前）unknown sea animals．These animals lived far below the ocean's surface，where scientists had believed no animals could live．
    By the 1980s，Ballard's interests changed．He developed unmanned（无人的）vehicles to explore the ocean bottom．His first find，the well-known ship Titanic，made Ballard famous．He was not happy with just one big find，however．He looked for and found other well-known ships．One was the German battleship Bismarck．Another was the U．S．S．Yorktown，an aircraft carrier （航空母舰） that sank during World War II．

    The restaurant belongs to frozen food giant（巨人）Birds Eye，who came up with the idea to cash in on people's addiction with photographing food and sharing the pictures online．They conducted a survey and found out that more than half of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals．So they realized it was a better way to advertise their new dining range．
    The pop-up diner was open in Soho，London for three days in May，and is now moving to other major UK cities．They serve two-course meals that customers don't have to pay for，if they photo and lnstagram it．
    The restaurant is a part of Birds Eye's"Food for Life"campaign，a new marketing project that aims at changing the way people look at frozen food．"Taking photos of food enables people to show off and to share their mealtime moments-from the everyday to the special．"said marketing director Margaret Jobling．
    The reaction to The Picture House has been great so far And the pay-by-picture concept has proven to be an effective way．Alternative payment methods are actually gaining popularity among a lot of businesses．Last year in a cafe in Germany customers pay by how much time they spend there，not by what they eat．
