【题目】Standing desks have become common across Silicon Valley, offering health benefits to those willing to work on their feet. However, due to their high price, they have failed to catch on until now. Recently, Ikea has brought out Bekant convertible(可改变的)standing desk that can become a normal desk at the touch of a button. The $500 adjustable desk can transform from a standard desk to a standing one, and Ikea hopes it could make the standing desk mainstream.

Experts say that changing from a seated to a standing desk can improve productivity. Similar desks have become a common sight at tech firms such as Google, where some employees have even installed treadmill (跑步机)and bicycle desks.

The desk is not the first “convertible” on the market. As early as 2013, Stir Kinect brought out an adjustable desk. The $3,890 Stir Kinect desk has a motor to raise and lower itself, converting it into a standing desk or a traditional desk. The desk can even be programmed to move up and down slightly, making it appear to take a gentle breath to remind the user to change their position. To move between sitting and standing positions, owners simply double tap on the screen. The desk can learn the user’s preferences over time and suggest the best seating position.

The Stir Kinect desk was created by a team of ex-Apple and Disney engineers. It has a built-in touch screen to control and track movement, and can tell users exactly how many calories they burn by standing during their working day. It also has devices containing power points and USB ports for charging phones, to keep cables hidden.

“Ikea’s height adjustable desk is great for opening up the lower end of the market, ’’ said JP Labrosse, founder and CEO of Stir.

【题目】 Desiree was only four when she lost her Dad. Instead of gradually adjusting to his death, Desiree refused to accept it and even wanted to die so as to be with her father. Concerned about her daughter, Rhonda turned to her mother, Trish Moore, for help.

November 8 of 1993 would have been Ken’s 29th birthday. So Trish advised Desiree to send her father a card. Desiree’s eyes lit up as she dictated a letter, “Happy birthday, Daddy. I love you and miss you. 【题目】Next time you’re planning to go out for a relaxing walk with your MP3 player, be sure to check the weather forecast first. Summer is the prime time for lightning strikes, a fact that Jason Bunch, a teen from Castle Rock, Colo, learned in a hard way. A couple of summers ago, he was mowing (割草) grass while listening to some Metallica on his iPod. Although there wasn’t any rain falling on Bunch, he did hear distant thunder. Bunch was then struck by lightning, which seemed to travel through his music player, blowing out his eardrums and leaving him with burns where the device and its power lines were close to his body.

Devices such as MP3 players don’t attract lightning, says Dr. Mary Ann Cooper, an emergency room physician at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago. However, they may change the pathway that lightning’s energy follows in the human body. Lightning that might have passed rather harmlessly over the skin may react differently to the metal of these devices and cause damage.

Rather than leaving your tunes at home, your best bet is watching out for lightning before it hits. Though people have been injured while using MP3 players in storms, Cooper says, “The devices’ main task is keeping you from paying attention to thunder and the sky.” If you’re caught in a storm, seek shelter.

1When does lightning happen most?

A. Winter. B. Fall. C. Summer. D. Spring.

2What was the effect of this lightning strike on Jason Bunch?

A. The lightning burned Bunch and blew out his eardrums.

B. The lightning passed harmlessly over Bunch’s skin.

C. Bunch fell to the ground and couldn’t move his upper body.

D. Bunch was fine, but his iPod was burned by the lightning.

3What can you conclude about the safety of using MP3 players during a storm?

A. MP3 players are desperately unsafe to use during a storm.

B. IPods are safe to use during a storm, but other MP3 players are not.

C. MP3 players increase your safety during a storm by directing lightning toward the ground.

D. MP3 players become unsafe to use if they keep you from paying attention during a storm.

4The primary purpose of this text is .

A. to describe the joy that Jason Bunch felt after he survived a lightning strike

B. to inform the risks of wearing an MP3 player during lightning strikes

C. to tell a lightning emergency Jason Bunch met with

D. to show that MP3 players are so popular among teenagers

【题目】 University of Pennsylvania researchers say that for the first time they have linked social media use to increases in depression and loneliness. The idea that social media is anything but social when it comes to mental health has been talked about for years, but not many studies have managed to actually link the two. To do that, Penn researchers, led by psychologist Melissa Hunt, designed a study that focused on WeChat, Snapchat and Instagram.

The study was conducted with 143 participants, who before they began, completed a mood survey and sent along photos of their battery screens, showing how often they were using their phones to access social media. “we set out to do a study which attempts to imitate real life.” Hunt said.

The study divided the participants into two groups: The first group was allowed to maintain their normal social media habits. The other, the control group, was restricted to 10 minutes per day on social media. The restrictions were put in place for three weeks and then tested for now comes such as fear of missing out, anxiety, depression and loneliness.

The results showed a very clear link between social media use and increased levels of depression and loneliness.” Using less social media then you normally do would lead to significant decreases in both depression and loneliness,” Hunt said.

Social media invites what Hunt calls “downward social comparison.” “When you’re online, it can sometimes seem that everyone else is cooler and having more fun and included in more things and you’re left out,” Hunt said. And that’s just generally discouraging. “Every minute you spend online is a minute you are not doing your work or not meeting a friend for dinner or having a deep conversation with your roommate.” And these real life activities are the ones that you can encourage self-esteem and self-worth, Hunt added.

“People are on their devices, and that’s not going to change,” she said. But as in life, a bit of control goes a long way.

A.Social media is a good tool for social activity.

B.Social media can’t increase people’s social activities.

C.Social media is the cause of depression and loneliness.

2What are the participants required to do?

A.To participate in a mood survey first.

B.To show how often they use their phones.

C.To keep their normal social media habits.

D.To stay in the lab for three weeks.

3What can we infer from Hunt’s words in the last two paragraphs?

A.Social comparison makes people work harder.

B.Social media activities can increase self-esteem and self-worth.

C.People will reduce the use of social media.

D.controlling the use of social media will make a difference to people’s life.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.The tendency of using social media.

B.The importance of the study on social media.

C.The disadvantage of using social media.

D.A study on the relationship between social media and mental health.
