Saturday, October 7th, was a marathon of sad tasks for Anna Politkovskaya. Two weeks earlier, her father, a retired official in the department of foreign affairs, had died of a heart attack as he emerged from the Moscow Metro while on his way to visit Politkovskaya’s mother, Raisa Mazepa, in the hospital. She had just been diagnosed(诊断) with cancer and was too weak even to attend her husband’s funeral. “Your father will forgive me, because he knows that I have always loved him,” she told Anna and her sister, Elena Kudimova, the day he was buried. A week later, she had an operation and since then Anna and Elena had been taking turns helping her deal with her grief.
Politkovskaya was supposed to spend the day at the hospital, but her twenty-six-year-old daughter, who was pregnant, had just moved into Politkovskaya’s apartment, on Lesnaya Street, while her own place was being prepared for the baby. “Anna had so much on her mind,” Elena Kudimova told me when we met in London, before Christmas. “And she was trying to finish her article.” Politkovskaya was a special reporter for the small newspaper Novaya Gazeta, and, like most of her work, the piece focused on the terror that can be seen all over the southern republic of Chechnya. This time, she had been trying to report repeated cruel acts done by people faithful to the Prime Minister, Ramzan Kadyrov, who are in favour of Russia. In the past seven years, Politkovskaya had written dozens of accounts of life during wartime; many had been collected in her book “A Small Corner of Hell: reports from Chechnya.” Politkovskaya was far more likely to spend time in a hospital than on a battlefield, and her writing bore frequent witness to robbery, and the uncontrolled cruelty of life in a place that few other Russians—and almost no other reporters—cared to think about.

Culture shock is a special disease for people who have suddenly moved to a foreign country.   1  .

Culture shock is caused by the anxiety that results from losing all familiar signs of social communication.  2    When to shake hands and what to say, when we meet people, when and how to give tips, how to do shopping, when to accept and refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These signs, which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, or customs, are acquired(获得) by all of us in the course of growing up and as much a part of our culture as the language we speak or the beliefs we accept.   3     .

Now when a person enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar signs are removed. No matter how broadminded will you may be, a series of supports have been knocked from under you, followed by a feeling of failure in much the same way. 4  “The ways of the host country are bad because they make us feel bad.” When foreigners in a strange land get together to complain about the host country and its people, you can be sure that they are suffering from culture shock.

Another phrase of culture shock is regression(退化). The home environment suddenly becomes very important. To the foreigner, everything becomes unreasonably beautified. All the difficulties and problems are forgotten and only the good things back home are remembered.   5    .

A.Nowadays a lot of people work at home.

B.The children are taught to respect different cultures .

C.Like most illnesses, it has its own symptoms(病症) and cures.

D.It usually takes a trip home to bring one back to reality.

E. First they reject the environment which causes discomfort.

F. Those signs include many ways in which we are used to the situation of daily life.

I was nineteen years old the first time I saw my own true character.

My trip to and from work each day included a ten-minute walk through the heart of downtown, where the   36  often gathered. Like most busy citizens, I learned to   37  those nameless faces. When it came to homeless beggars, my   38  life experience had led me to one   39  that they are on the street because they choose to be, probably due to alcohol or drugs.

It was an extremely cold day. When I passed the groups of beggars as usual, I heard a shaky voice target me.

“Spare some change?” he asked.

I didn’t even   40  looking up at his nameless face. I briefly   41  him walking into a liquor store and buying whiskey with the money we spared him. Like most teenagers, it took me only moments to   42  him.

“I have no money on me,” I said quickly

Looking back now, I feel as if God had set out that day to teach me a lesson. And God   43 . Just a few feet past him, I managed to find the only ice patch on the sidewalk. I   44  and landed heavily on my right knee. The   45  was almost killing me as I tried to get up. Then I heard a shaky voice only inches above me.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

I knew immediately this was the man I had just rushed past. Even in pain, I   46  took a quick moment to sniff for the smell of alcohol on his breath. There was none. He wasn’t   47 . I saw the   48  in his eyes.

“My name is Mike,” he said. “That’s quite a fall you took, and you really need to get it checked by a doctor,” he said with deep   50 .

“This bus goes past the hospital,” I said.

Mike paused, and a look of sudden   51  crossed his face. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small cup. He took out all the change and held it out toward me.

“I think there’s just enough here for you to take the bus,” he said,

I was highly embarrassed as I remember my   52 . I reached for my purse and took out my change. At least ten dollars. I offered Mike all my change.

Mike held his cup tightly,   54  it as if it were the first gift he had ever received.

A half cup of change seemed too small a gift for the man who gave a   55  to every nameless face I’ve ever seen.

The familiar patterns of notes attracts me into the colourfully world of music. Now and then I stopped to follow the songs. Sometimes, my mother comes in, asking me to fix my attention to my homework. She does not like the pop music. 科目:高中英语 来源:2014届江西省高一下学期第三次月考英语试卷(解析版) 题型:阅读理解

There is a very special wolf that lives in Africa. They are actually called, the African wild dog, of painted dogs.

These animals live in open woodlands, or in the plains of Africa. Today, however, most of the animals can be found in eastern or southern Africa. These animals are beautiful. They have rounded ears instead of pointed like most dogs, and they have four toes (脚趾) on each of their four feet, also a unique characteristic because other dogs have five. Their fine fur is always different from each other. The fur is usually a combination of black, brown, red, and white, and sometimes even yellow. No wonder they’re called the painted wolf.

The African wild dog is a very social animal. They live in groups and have numbers from five to about twenty. The members of a group are always very close to one another. They communicate in their own language or body language. When someone is very old or sick, the others will help, and they are willing to share the food with the elders and with those who are weak, which is what we should learn from.

The family does everything together, from raising young, to sleeping together, to hunting. When they hunt, they will work together suing team work to kill animals that are larger than them.

They sometimes hunt farm animals. This is unfortunate, because both poachers (偷猎者), and people who own farms shoot the painted dogs who are just trying to survive.

Before, there used to be many large groups throughout the land, but now the African wild god is very rare. They are also losing their population because of their own loss of habitat thanks to human’s farming and forest cutting.

1.From the text we learn that the African wild dog         .

A.lives in the north of Africa

B.has sixteen toes altogether

C.has pointed ears like most dogs

D.lives in forests in groups

2.Why do African wild dogs get the name “painted dogs”?

A.They all have colorful fur.

B.The dogs in the same group are of different colors.

C.Artists love to paint them in different colors.

D.None of them has the same color.

3.According to the author, what should we learn from African wild dogs?

A.They always do everything together.

B.They help the sick, the elderly and the weak.

C.They are always very close to one another.

D.They communicate in their own language.

4.Which of the following is NOT the reason why African wild dogs are becoming very rare?

A.Poachers kill some of them.

B.They are short of food sometimes.

C.They are losing their habitat.

D.Farmers shoot some of them.

5.Where could this passage probably be found?

A.The Travelers

B.Fashion Weekly
