    5．Trapped under ruins after the Iran earthquake，Dan Woolley believed he was going to die．But rather than giving up，the film-maker managed to look up ways to treat his injuries on his iPhone beneath the earth．He also wrote a moving diary for his family，allowing them to read his last messages of love and comforting them after his death．Instead，he was pulled from the ruins after a week---and would soon meet his family．
    Mr．Woolley，from Colorado Springs，America，had raveled to Iran with his colleague David Hames．Both had been working for Charity Compassion International．He was in the hotel when the earthquake struck．Buried under tons of ruins，the film-maker downloaded a first aid application to his iPhone．He used the instructions from the app to treat the serious bleeding．He used his shirt to tie off the injury on his leg and a sock to bandage the back of his head．The app advised him not to go to sleep if he felt sleepy．Mr．Woolley set his phone alarm to go off every 20 minutes to keep him awake．
    Mr Woolley used a small black notebook to write messages to his family，including his son and wife．He had thought his relatives would read them after he was dead．
    "I was in a big accident．Don't be upset at God，"he wrote．"I'm still praying that God will get me out，but he may not．But he will always take care of you．"
    Mr Woolley was eventually rescued by a French rescue team．After being flown to Miami for surgery，he said，"I cried．At that time I wanted to use that time to do everything I could for my family．I always wanted to survive，but I knew that was something that I couldn't control．"

    Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him，but shed didn't want to run after him．jenny bent down quickly，picked up the watch and ran home．On arriving home，Jenny put it on almost without thinking．She was surprised it fitted so well．She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech．Words just flooded out of her．"I'm going to talk about swimming．I have been lucky．I've won lots of competitions．But when I'm in a race，I'm not really thinking about winning．I'm just loving the feeling of being in the water…"Jenny laughed with excitement．She walked across the room．She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence．Turning back to the mirror，Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass．The flashes of silver seemed almost magical．So maybe Lee's watch Lee's watch really DID have something magic about it．
    The next day，as the lesson began，Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first．Nobody moved．Jenny slowly raised her arm．Before Miss Walker could say anything，there was a shout from behind．"She's stolen my watch!"Lee said angrily，"It went missing at school yesterday．"

    Antonio Chella from Italy is working with a Telenoid robot．To start with，the Telenoid will be trained to follow the movements and simple sounds made by a human singer，and to connect music with different emotional states．Chella then plans to see if the robot can use these connections to create music．
    Intelligence is often regarded as the ability to find connections between the existing things．But Chella suggests that a conscious（有意识的） creature should be able to go a step further and introduce new connections tat result in the creation of something new．
    Some jazz musicians say that they should have a mental library of musical phrases so that they are able to combine them in new ways．More importantly，however，this combination happens in a state that is similar in a sense to dreaming．Chella wants to copy these states in a machine．
    "This work raises interesting questions about the link between consciousness and music making，"says Philippe Pasquier，a a musician and computer scientist．But he is skeptical about whether a robot musician needs a physical body．
    Pasquier argues that the robots are faced with two challenges（挑战）．Software that can copy Bach has already been developed．But interpretation（演绎）includes human's different tastes and judgments．"What made the Beatles famous was not so much their works，but the fact that the interpretations of the works were wonderful，"he says．
    It is not yet clear how a robot would go about interpreting music in a new way．But by copying humans and then learning to sing，Chella's robot could provide clues．
