    12．To most of us，school means classes，teachers，schedules，grades，and tests．But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts，school is very different．

    At Sudbury Valley School，you will permit children to talk，read，paint，cook，work on computers，study French，play the piano，climb trees，or just run around．Two boys spent three years just fishing!
    The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules．Every week，there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each-even the fouryearolds．They decide the school rules，how to spend the school budget（预算），and even which staff they want and do not want anymore．
    When the school first opened in 1968，people said it would never work．But today，the school has 200students，and 80% of its students go on to college．Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today．One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist．

    7．The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment．These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature．
    David Tillman，a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota，America，examined information from 100countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health．He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s．He found that as nations industrialized（工业化），population increased and earnings rose，more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet．The Western diet is high in sugar，fat，oil and meat．By eating these foods，people began to get fatter and sicker．David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes （糖尿病） and heart disease．
    Unfortunately when people become industrialized，if they adopt this Western diet，they are going to have these same health problems，especially in developing countries in Asia．China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20-year period．And that is happening all across the world，in Mexico，in Nigeria and so on．
    And，a diet bad for human beings，is also bad for the environment．As the world's population grows，more forests and tropical areas will become farmland for crops or grasslands for cattle．We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now．
    Mr．Tillman calls the link between diet，the environment and human health，"a dilemma"：a problem offering a difficult choice．He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind．

    Tata salt was first iodised （碘处理） salt marketed by an Indian Company．It has been enjoying a good and steady market．Captain Cook，another producer of iodised salt，who entered the market later，had to adopt some strategy to get control of the market．The TV advertisement of Captain Cook stressed on‘Free flow'of their salt when transferred to a container．The producer of Tata Salt retaliated （报复） by saying that the claim of Captain Cook was a trick and those who were quality conscious should deal with it with caution．
    3．Pepsi vs．Coco Cola
    Coca Cola was selected as the official soft drink for the Wills World Cricket 1996．When the cricket series was on，the marketers of Pepsi constantly advertised on TV．Their advertisement gave the idea that the cricketers preferred only Pepsi and as a matter of fact there was nothing official about it．
    4．Horlicks vs．Complan
    Sometime back，the TV advertisement of Complan，a health drink directly attacked Horlicks，which has been in the market for several decades．The claim of Complan was that their brand （which according to them was Brand C） has a higher percentage of ingredients （材料） compared to Brand H （reference was nothing but to Horlicks）．
    The above examples clearly show how the technique of advertisement is misused by some marketers to ruin the image of their competitors．This，certainly，is not a healthy trend．
    Any marketer should only speak about his products and not about his competitors'products．The awareness of consumers has certainly increased over the years and they are no longer easily taken in．There are many consumer products like salt，oil shaving blades etc．But one thing for sure is that offering the same product in a different container will not make the product different．
    Mass media like Radio，Television and newspaper should not allow advertisements that tell lies．Legal regulations，in this regard，should also be made stricter．
