    Like most employees，I'm disappointed to learn that we're not getting a
    bonus this year．I am writing to express my disagreement with the company policy concerning bonus-targets．Setting this policy essentially leaves it up to the
    company as to whether we receive bonuses，since the company can reinvest（再投资）operational profits to an amount that sets our net  profit at below-target levels．I know that company bought back some stocks（股票）at the close of the financial year．
    Essentially，this takes operational profit and reinvests it into the company．This action，while strengthening the company's position in the market，reduced net profits to below target levels．
    As a stockholder，I do agree with reinvesting in the company through stock buy-backs； However，I strongly disagree with its bad effect on employees．I suggest we change our bonus structure to look at operational profits rather than net．In my opinion，this is the only way that employees have some guarantees that their bonuses can't be taken away through a simple act of an accounting pen．

    14．In the dry Namib Desert on the west coast of Africa，one type of beetle has found a special way of surviving．When the morning fog arrives，the Namib Beetle collects water drops on its bumpy（起伏不平的）back，then lets the water roll down into its mouth，allowing it to drink in an area without flowing water．
        ShreerangChhatre watns to use what nature has developed to help the world's poor．Chhatre is an engineer at MIT who works on fog harvesting，the devices that，like the beetle，attract water drops．This way，poor villagers could collect clan water near their homes，instead of spending hours carrying water from distant wells of rivers．
        Access to water is a pressing global issue．According to the World Health Organization and UNICEF，nearly 900 million people worldwide live without safe drinking water．The burden of finding and transporting water falls heavily on women and children．"As a middle-class person，I think it's terrible that the poor have to spend hours a day walking just to obtain a basic necessity，"Chhatre says．
       A fog-harvesting device consists of a fence-like mesh panel（网状面板），which attracts drops，connected to containers into which water falls．Chhatre has improved the materials used in these devices．He is continuing his work at MTT Sloan and the Legaturn Center in order to develop a workable business plan for applying fog-harvesting devices．
        Interest in fog harvesting dates back to the 1990s，and has increased since new research on the Namib Beetle became famous in 2001．A few technologists saw potential in the concept for people．One Canadian charitable organization，FogQuest，has tested projects in Chile and Guatemala．
        But fog harvesting remains in its infancy，technologically and commercially，as Chhatre readily recognizes．"It still faces some open problems，"he says．"But it's a work in progress．"After all，the water that fills our rivers and lakes comes from air．

    11．Saying"I'm sorry"when you've hurt someone can be a hard thing to do．We're stubborn creatures，after all，and don't love dealing with it when we're wrong．But apologizing，and meaning it，is an important part of the forgiveness process．
        Michael McCullough made a research and found that the most sincere，forgiveness-inducing apologies include saying"I'm sorry"，offering to make up for the wrongdoing in some way，and taking responsibility．And the reason why they work so well is largely based on principles of evolution：the apologies make the transgressor（犯错的人）seem more valuable as a relationship partner，and also help the victim feel less at risk of getting hurt again．
        One basic scientific implication of the results is that the human psychology of conflict resolution is usually similar to that of animals which live in groups．"Many group-living animals，but particularly mammals，seem to use‘peace-making gestures'as signals of their desire to end conflict and restore cooperative relationships with other individuals after aggressive conflict has occurred，"McCullough said．"We seem to reach a common view on this point．"
    "I would say that empathy（情感共鸣）is a part of good mental health，and that could be a part of the natural selection process，too，"Bethany Marshall says．"Humans with empathy tend to be healthier and make better choices in life，while those who are aggressive don't tend to do as well．"
        And having empathy when you've hurt someone，she says，is the best way to apologize．"The most important thing is that you feel the other person's pain，"she explains．"So instead of using logic to explain or defend，look inward to identify why you did the bad thing．Then convey that to them and say that you would like to make it better．That counts．"
