2.Treasure hunts have excited people's imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.Kit Williams,a modern writer,had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues (线索) found in a book when he wrote a children's story,Masquerade,in 1979.The book was about a hare,and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire.The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare,but Williams put in a lot of"red herrings",or false clues,to mislead them.
Ken Roberts,the man who found the hare,had been looking for it for nearly two years.Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time,he found it by logic (逻辑),not by luck.His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start.He had realized that the words:"One of Six to Eight"under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon,the first of Henry VIII's six wives.Even here,however,Williams had succeeded in misleading him.Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton n Cambridgeshire in 1536and thought that Williams had buried the hare there.He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him.He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill,in Bedfordshire,and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well,but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon,until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.
Even then his search had not come to an end.It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there.Williams encouraged him to continue,and on February 24th 1982,he found the treasure.It was worth 3,000in the beginning,but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.

6.Chimps(黑猩猩) will cooperate in certain ways, like gathering in war parties to protect their territory. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little instinct (本能) to help one another.Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves.Even chimp mothers regularly decline to share food with their children, who are able from a young age to gather their own food.
In the laboratory, chimps don't naturally share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or,with no great effort,a plate that also provides food for a neighbor to the next cage,he will pull at random---he just doesn't care whether his neighbor gets fed or not.Chimps are truly selfish.
Human children,on the other hand are extremely cooperative. From the earliest ages, they decide to help others,to share information and to participate in achieving common goals. The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of experiments with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see an worried adult with hands full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help.
There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not taught, but naturally possessed in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train children to behave socially.Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded.A third reason is that social intelligence develops in children before their general cognitive(认知的)skills,at least when compared with chimps. In tests c onducted by Tomasello, the children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests, but were considerably better at understanding the social world.
The core of what children's minds have and chimps'don't is what Tomasello calls shared
intentionality.Part of this ability is that they can infer what others know or are thinking. But beyond that, even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose. They actively seek to be part of a"we",a group that intends to work toward a shared goal.
58.What can we learn from the experiment with chimps?C
A.Chimps like to take in their neighbors'food.
B.Chimps tend to provide food for their children.
C.Chimps seldom care about others'interests.
D.Chimps naturally share food with each other.
