Many do-it-yourself homeowners are interested in
trying out solar power to learn about the technology
and perhaps to provide energy for limited-use applications.
There are a variety of ways to find cheap solar panels
(板), including buying used and building your own with
factory seconds. Both methods will save money while
forcing you to learn the ins-and-outs of a solar power
array (阵列).
We've all seen solar-powered street signs or PV
panels being used for various purposes at remote
locations. When those units become cracked or chipped
and- are considered "unsafe", companies are forced to
replace them, generally to avoid responsibility issues.
Because it's difficult to get rid of PV panels, many
companies, if approached, are willing to give them away or to sell them for modest prices. Depending on the
degree of damage present, expect to see performance degradation (降级) in the range of 10% to 60%. A
multimeter (万用表) can be used to test the panel before buying. If the panel's free, take it anyway. It could
still be useful in a home solar project.
A solar panel is really nothing but a box serving as a container for a large group of solar cells. Factory
second solar cells are usually sold on eBay at a small part of their regular cost. The cells come in a variety of
sizes. You will need to figure out how much power a single cell produces to determine how many will need to
be wired together to form an array.
A simple search of the Internet will show numerous sites detailing home solar panel projects. Do-it-yourself
lovers are generally quite generous in supply photographs of their work and description of what went wrong
and right with the project.
Getting cheap solar panels with slight imperfections either used or through sales of factory seconds, is a
perfect solution for home-built renewable energy projects. The high number of solar lovers online provide a
wealth of useful information. Only limited skills are required, plus an understanding of the basic wiring involved.
All are well within the talents of almost any home handyman. Beyond the satisfaction of having completed the
project, you'll come away with a functional solar panel that will be a source of power for use around the house
or at remote locations.
Solar energy systems are quickly becoming more popular with homeowners as prices continue to decline.
1. The author writes the passage to introduce _____.
[     ]
A. ways of finding cheap solar panels
B. ways of saving energy
C. a way of making a solar panel
D. a home-built energy system
2. What does the phrase "factory seconds" in the passage refer to?
[     ]
A. Second-hand factory products.
B. Cheap but perfect factory products.
C. Faulty factory solar cells.
D. The second best factory solar cells.
3. From Paragraph 5, we can learn about home-built energy projects that _____.
[     ]
A. none of them are beyond home handymen
B. a lot of useful information is available on the Internet
C. a perfect solution is to get cheap and perfect solar panels
D. understanding electrical wiring is not necessarily needed
4. What is the author's attitude towards the future of solar energy systems?
[     ]
A. Optimistic.
B. Pessimistic.
C. Indifferent.
D. Doubtful.

Scientists at Harvard University and Bates College find female chimpanzees (黑猩猩) appear to
treat sticks as dolls, carrying them around until they have children of their own. Young males engage
in such behavior much less frequently.
The new work by Sonya M. Kahlenberg and Richard W. Wrangham, described this week in the
journal Current Biology, provides the first evidence of a wild nonhuman species playing with dolls, as
well as the first known sex difference in a wild animal's choice of playthings.
The two researchers say their work adds to a growing body of evidence that human children are
probably born with their own ideas of how they want to behave, rather than simply mirroring other
girls who play with dolls and boys who play with trucks. Doll play among humans could have its
origins in object-carrying by earlier apes (猿类), they say, suggesting that toy selection is probably
not due entirely to socialization.
"In humans, there are obvious sex differences in children's toy play, and these are remarkably
similar across cultures," says Kahlenberg. "While socialization by elders and peers has been the
primary explanation, our work suggests that biology may also have an important role to play in activity
preferences."
In 14 years of data on chimpanzee behavior at the Kibale National Park in Uganda, Kahlenberg
and Wrangham counted more than 100 examples of stickcarrying. Some young chimpanzees carried
sticks into the nest to sleep with them and on one occasion built a separate nest for the stick. "We
have seen juveniles occasionally carrying sticks for many years, and because they sometimes treated
them rather like dolls, we wanted to know if in general this behavior tended to represent something
like playing with dolls," says Wrangham, a Professor at Harvard. "If the doll hypothesis (假设)
was right, we thought that females should carry sticks more than males do, and that the chimpanzees
should stop carrying sticks when they had their first child. We have now watched enough young
chimpanzees to prove both points."
1. What does a female chimpanzee do with sticks?
A. She gives them to her child to play with.
B. She treats them as dolls.
C. She makes useful tools from them.
D. She treats them as weapons.
2. What causes the different toy selection of chimpanzees, according to the passage?
A. Sex difference.
B. Socialization.
C. Environment.
D. Cultural difference.
3. We can infer from the fourth paragraph that ________.
A. socialization has nothing to do with human's choice of playthings
B. sex difference is the only factor in human's choice of playthings
C. the biology factor may also influence toy choice
D. people choose different toys in different cultures
4. It can be concluded from the passage that ________.
A. both humans and chimpanzees choose their playthings due to sex difference
B. different factors cause humans and chimpanzees to choose different playthings
C. only female chimpanzees have playthings
D. chimpanzees usually choose playthings for their children

In the summer of 1978 an English farmer was driving his tractor through a field of wheat when he
discovered that some of his wheat was lying flat on the ground. The fattened (压平的) wheat formed
a circle about six meters across. Around this circle were four smaller circles of flattened wheat. The
five circles were in a formation like five dots. During the following years, farmers in England found the
strange circles in their fields more and more often.
The circles are called "crop circles" because they appear in the fields of grain - usually wheat or corn.
The grain in the circles lies flat on the ground but never broken; it continues to grow, and farmers can
later harvest it. Farmers always discover the crop circles in the morning, so the circles probably form
at night. They appear only in the months from May to September.
At first, people thought that the circles were a hoax. Probably young people were making them as
a joke, or farmers were making them to attract tourists. To prove that the circles were a hoax, people
tried to make circles exactly like the ones that farmer had found. They couldn't do it. They couldn't
enter a field of grain without leaving tracks(痕迹), and they couldn't flatten the grain without breaking it.
Many people believe that beings from outer space are making the circle to communicate with us
from far away and that the crop circles are messages from them.
Scientists who have studied the crop circles suggested several possibilities. Some scientists say
that a downward rush of wind leads to the formation of the circles - the same downward rush of air
that sometimes causes an airplane to crash. Other scientists say that forces within the earth cause the
circles to appear. There is one problem with all these scientific explanations: crop circles often appear
in formations, like the five-dot formation. It is hard to believe that any natural force could form those.
1. In the summer of 1978, an English farmer discovered in his field that __________.
A. some of his wheat had been damaged
B. his grain was growing up in circles.
C. his grain was moved into several circles
D. some of his wheat had fallen onto the ground.
2. According to the text, the underlined part "hoax" (in the 3rd paragraph) probably means __________.
A. an attempt made to fool people
B. a special way to plant crops
C. a research on the force of winds
D. an experiment for the protection of crops.
3. Which of the following may prove that the crop circles are not made by man?
A. The farmer couldn't step out of the field.
B. The farmers couldn't make the circles round.
C. The farmers couldn't leave without footprints.
D. The farmers couldn't keep the wheat straight up.
4. A proper title for this passage is ___________.
A. An Unsolved Mystery
B. Strange Flying Objects
C. The Power of Natural Forces
D. The discovery of Strange Circles

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly (完全地), four things are necessary. First, we must
understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, with
confidence(自信) and without hesitation (犹豫). Thirdly, we must do much reading. Finally, we must be
able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.
There are no shortcuts to success in language learning. A good memory is a great help, but it is not
enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is not much learning by heart long lists(一
览表) of words and their  meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the
language.
If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We
must "learn through use." Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language
whenever we can.
1. The most important things to learn a foreign language are _____.
A. understanding and speaking
B. listening, speaking, reading and writing

A. he doesn't understand the language when he hears it spoken
B. he doesn't have a good memory
C. he always remembers lists of words and their meanings
D. he often hesitates(犹豫) to practise speaking it
3. One can never learn a foreign language well by _____.
A. doing much practice
B. studying the dictionary
C. learning through use
D. using the language

According to decades-long research, women who took low to moderate (节制) daily doses of
aspirin had a reduced death rate ,especially from heart disease.
The research, based on data from a major trial that has tracked almost 80,000 women since 1976,
found that women who reported using aspirin on a regular basis had a 25 percent lower risk of death
from any cause than women who didn't take the drug.
The risk of death from cardiovascular (心血管的) disease was 38 percent lower for aspirin users,
and there was also a 12 percent reduction in cancer deaths that took effect after a decade of aspirin
use, the researchers found in their report based on the Nurses' Health Study.
However,an accompanying editorial in the journal cautioned that the results were open to debate
and far from definitive.
The dissenting (持异议的) editorial was based on results of an earlier trial by the Women's Health
Study, which followed almost 40,000 women for 11 years and found no reduction in overall deaths.
Therefore, the new findings" cannot overcome the accumulated evidence that aspirin is not particularly
effective for the primary prevention of death from cardiovascular disease in women. "
" This is a complicated issue , " said Dr. Andrew T. Chan, leading author of the new report. "We
understand that aspirin has potential health benefits, but who would aspirin therapy(疗法) be appropriate
for? There are areas of disagreements that need further study before that question can be answered" ,
Chan said. But there is information from the two large studies and other trials that can help guide women
and their physicians,he said. And anyone who is thinking about daily aspirin should really talk with doctors about the benefits and risks.
1.  The new report clearly benefits the women suffering _____.
A. heart disease
B. cancer
C. lose of memory
D. aspirin side effects
2. Which of the following questions hasn't been solved according to Dr. Chan?
A. Whether aspirin is beneficial for health?
B. Which of the two researches is really reliable?
C. Who will do the further study in this area?
D. Who are proper for this treatment?
3. Which research does the author seem to support?
A. The new one.
B. The earlier one.
C. Neither.
D. Both.
4.We know from the last paragraph that women who trust the treatment should ____.
A. be very careful about it
B. start immediately with the help of their physicians
C. concentrate on the benefits instead of the risks
D. turn to their physicians for only the benefit it has
5. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To promote the new aspirin therapy to women.
B. To introduce two controversial researches.
C. To draw a final conclusion on the debate.
D. To help women live longer and healthier.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but
have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still
swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still
ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the
words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember
the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning , which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned
something, additional learning trials (尝试) increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing
baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such
as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn
but overlearn.
The multiplication tables (乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather
quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in
childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming (突击学习) for an examination, though it may result
in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn
the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he
learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.
1. What is the main idea of paragraph I?
A. People remember well what they learned in childhood.
B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D. Stories for children arc easy to remember.
2. The author explains the law of overlearning by_________.
A. presenting research findings
B. selling down general rules
C. making a comparison
D. using examples
3. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is_______.
A. a result of overlearning
B. a special case of cramming
C. a skill to deal with math problems
D. a basic step towards advanced studies
4. What does the word "they" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Commonly accepted rules.
B. The multiplication tables.
C. Things easily forgotten.
D. School subjects.
5. What is the author's opinion on cramming?
A. It leads to failure in college exams.
B. It's helpful only in a limited way.
C. It's possible to result in poor memory.
D. It increases students' learning interest.
