Always use a clean paper towel to dry your hands. 上文中a clean paper towel可对应到E选项中that paper towel。

Once you've taken a new medical mask from the box, check it to ensure it doesn't contain any imperfections, holes or tears in the material.

The inside of most medical masks is white in colour, while the outside has a colour of some sort. Before applying the mask to your face, make sure the white side is facing towards your face.

Pick up this type of mask by the loops, put one loop around one ear and then put the other loop around your other ear.

Now that the medical mask is in place on your head and face, use your fingers to make the top edge of the mask around the bridge of your nose.

Jack was gone.

For six years, Jack had lived four floors directly below him. If it hadn’t been for the fire escape, the two best friends could have seen each other by sticking their heads out of their bedroom windows.

Every summer had been filled with bike rides and baseball, but last summer—the summer of Cyclops—had been the best.

Kyle and Jack had created the pulley contraption (滑轮), which Jack named Cyclops, from old bicycles, a backpack and a long rope. It ran beside the fire escape, and anything that fit into the pack could be slid from Kyle to Jack and back again. Cyclops had exchanged messages, comics and even chocolate cookies between windows.

Three days ago, Jack said good-bye to Kyle, saying his family was moving. Cyclops’ backpack rested on the fire escape outside Jack’s empty bedroom.

Staring at the ceiling over his bed, Kyle felt sad and lonely. Zzzoop! Kyle ran to the window, only to find Cyclops rushing toward him. ‘‘Jack?” he shouted. Kyle opened the backpack and found a note “This is cool. Did you make it?” Disappointed, he threw the note away and closed the window, muttering (咕哝着) to the faceless stranger in Jack’s room, “Forget it.”

Minutes later, Kyle ran his eyes over Cyclops. Having read one page of his favorite comic, he looked at it again. He wrote a note. “Who are you?” Zzzooop! “I’m Max.” “I’m Kyle. How old are you?”

Cyclops whirred (呼呼地响), carrying notes between Kyle and Max. They discovered they would be in Mrs. Parker’ fifth grade class next year. They both loved riding bikes and playing baseball but hated strawberry jam.

Kyle sent three cookies and a note down. Cyclops ran between the windows as Kyle and Max made crucial decisions, like how to go to the zoo, when and where to meet. “Feel like going to the zoo tomorrow? Zzzooop! “OK.”

Para. 1: Early the next morning, Kyle got ready and his mom smilingly held the door open.

To address the plastic pollution troubling the world’s seas and waterways, Cornell University chemists have developed a new polymer (聚合物) that can degrade (降解) plastic when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, according to the research published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

“We have created a new plastic that has the mechanical properties required by commercial fishing gear. If it eventually gets lost in the water environment, this material can degrade on a realistic time scale,” said lead researcher Bryce Lipinski, professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Cornell University. “This material could effectively reduce persistent plastic accumulation in the environment.”

Commercial fishing contributes to about half of all floating plastic waste that ends up in the oceans. Fishing nets and ropes are primarily made from three kinds of polymers, none of which easily degrade. “While research of degradable plastics has received much attention in recent years,” Lipinski said, “obtaining a material with a mechanical strength comparable to commercial plastic remains a difficult challenge.”

Coates and his research team have spent the past 15 years developing the new plastic called isotactic polypropylene oxide, or iPPO. While its original discovery was in 1949, the mechanical strength of this material was unknown before this recent work. The high isotacticity and polymer chain length of their material makes it different from previous plastics and provides its mechanical strength.

Lipinski and other scientists want no race of the polymer to be left in the environment. He notes there is precedent (先例) for the biodegradation of small chains of iPPO which could effectively make it disappear and ongoing efforts aim to prove this.

1What is the feature about the new polymer?

A.It can solve the problem of plastic consumption.

B.It can degrade plastic waste in the sea water.

C.It has been developed to solve plastic pollution.

D.It has been developed to lower fishing costs.

2What can we infer from paragraph 3?

A.It requires great effort to invent the new plastic.

B.Fishing should be forbidden in the sea.

C.Fishing nets and ropes are not the major pollution source.

D.Degradable plastics were not paid attention to until recent years.

3What did the recent study find about iPPO?

A.Its original discovery.B.Its mechanical properties.

C.Its complex structure.D.Its mechanical strength.

4What is Lipinski’s attitude towards the future of iPPO?

A.Doubtful.B.Promising.

C.Unconcerned.D.Disapproval.
