Dear Mr. Li,

I¡¯m glad to tell you that I have made great progress in my English study since I became a senior high student.

Thank you so much for your great help in your class.

Wish you all the best.

Yours

I¡¯m glad to tell you that I have made great progress in my English study since I became a senior high student.

When I started to learn senior English in the beginning, I had much difficulty in learning English. I found it so difficult that I almost lost heart. Later, I gradually realized the importance of English, as a result, I worked hard every day, such as reading and reciting English texts as often as possible. I also went to ask my teachers and classmates for better ways of learning English. It is their help and your encouragement that help me make great progress in my English. And now I¡¯m getting more and more interested in it.

Thank you so much for your great help in your class.

Wish you all the best.

Yours,

Li Hua

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.

Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.

Do you know what a ¡°territory¡± is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.

If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting£¨Öþ³²£©season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird¡¯s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.

Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.

You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.

1.Some scientists believe that most of the time bird¡¯s singing is actually________.

A. an expression of happiness B. a way of warning

C. an expression of anger D. a way of greeting

A. A place where families of other species are not accepted

B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice

C. An area for which birds fight against each other

D. An area which a bird considers to be its own

3.Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?

A. Because they want to invite more friends

B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away

C. Because they want to find outsiders around

D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears

4.How does the writer explain bird¡¯s singing?

A. By comparing birds with human beings

B. By reporting experiment results

C. By describing birds? daily life

D. By telling a bird?s story

Mr.Bean is an internationally recognized comedy character on TV and in films. He constantly gets into awkward and absurd situations£¬which greatly amuses audiences regardless of their nationalities or culture. The humour is always made clear through a series of simple and funny acts that rely purely on body language£¬which is universal.

One of my favourite shows is that Mr.Bean has a meal in a fancy restaurant. After being seated at his table£¬Mr.Bean takes out a card£¬writes a few words on it£¬seals(ÃÜ·â) it in an envelope and places it on the table. After a moment£¬he looks back at the envelope but this time he looks surprised£¬as if he did not know it was there. He opens it to find a birthday card and delightedly puts it on the table for everyone to see.

When he looks at the menu£¬an astonished look swiftly appears on his face.He takes all the money out of his wallet£¬counts it and puts it in a saucer(²èÍÐ)£®He then looks from the menu to the money with concern until he finds one thing that makes him smile. Then he orders a dish called ¡°steak tartare¡±£®When the dish arrives£¬he is shocked to discover that ¡°steak tartare¡± is actually raw hamburger. He makes an attempt to eat it£¬but it is clear from the look on his face that he finds the taste truly disgusting. He cannot hide his feelings£¬except when the waiter asks if everything is all right. When this happens£¬he smiles and nods£¬indicating that everything is fine. When the waiter is not looking£¬however£¬he busies himself hiding the raw meat anywhere he can reach¡ªthe sugar bowl£¬the tiny flower vase£¬inside a bun(СԲÃæ°ü) and under a plate. He becomes so desperate in the end that he even hides some inside the purse of a woman sitting near him and throws some down the trousers of the restaurant¡¯s violinist!

I like to watch Mr.Bean on TV£¬but I wouldn¡¯t like to meet someone like him in real life and I certainly wouldn¡¯t like to have dinner with him!

Football is, I believe, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to one of the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for their teams. One of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He has pictures of them and knows the results of large numbers of matches. He will tell you who he thinks will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times of his age.

Most schools in England take football seriously£¨ÈÏÕæµØ£©¡ª much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all very important and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy¡¯s mind with facts in the classroom; education also means the training of character by means of games, especially team games, where the boy or girl has to learn to work with others for his or her team instead of working for himself or herself alone. Therefore the school plans games and matches for its students. Football is a good team game. It is good both for the body and the mind. That is why it is every school¡¯s game in England.

1.Football games are very popular in England among _____________.

A. all the people B. grown-ups

C. boys only D. boys and girls

2.In England, a boy¡¯s opinion of a match is often______________ .

A. three or four times better than that of a man

B. worse than that of a man

C. as good as that of a man

D. worth thinking three or four times

3.In England, education means _________________ .

A. filling a boy¡¯s mind with stories

B. more than the teaching of knowledge

C. the teaching of knowledge only

D. training character by means of football games

4.We can use_______ instead of the underlined word ¡°therefore¡±

A. however B. as a result

C. why D. at that place

5.From the passage, we learn that _______________.

A. schools in England make use of football games for the training of character

B. England is better than all the European countries

C. football is more important than lessons

D. only some schools in England have football game
