【答案】

Should We Get Rid of Chinglish?

It’s true that nowadays Chinglish signs can be seen in many public places, especially in big cities. However, people have different views on whether we should get rid of Chinglish.

Some are in favour of the idea of getting rid of it.They believe that, first of all, foreigners can hardly understand those Chinglish signs.More importantly,we should learn standard English.

However, others say no to the suggestion. In their opinion, for one thing Chinglish makes the English language more colourful;for another,Chinglish adds much pleasure to our life.

As far as I’m concerned,we should learn standard English instead of Chinglish because only in that way can we better communicate with foreigners.

The other day, as I walked to school, I passed small construction area. It was not far away in my school. I notice a man bringing a bunch of things: shoes, blankets, some canned food, and clothing. Perhaps the items were gathered from his family and some of his friend. He started laying it down for people to take. Certainly, I was curious about what things would be going. But I rushed there after school. I saw that much of the items were taken by others. I have read lots of inspired stories of kindness. This is probably the sweetest act of kindness I’ve been witnessed so far.

【题目】Our quarrel with efficiency is not that it gets things done, but that it is a thief of time when it leaves us no leisure to enjoy ourselves, and that it strains our nerves when we try to get things done perfectly. In building bridges, American engineers calculate so finely and exactly as to make the two ends come together within one-tenth of an inch. But when two Chinese begin to dig a tunnel from both sides of a mountain both come out on the other side. --The Chinese’s firm belief is that it doesn’t matter so long as a tunnel is dug through, and if we have two instead of one, why, we have a double track to boot.

The pace of modern industrial life forbids this kind of glorious and magnificent idling. But, worse than that, it imposes upon us a different conception of time as measured by the clock and eventually turns the human being into a clock himself. (This sort of thing is bound to come to China, as is evident, for instance, in the case of a factory of twenty thousand worker. The luxurious prospect of twenty thousand workers coming in at their own sweet pleasure at all hours is, of course, somewhat terrifying.)Nevertheless, such efficiency is what makes life so hard and full of excitement. A man who has to be punctually at a certain place at five o’clock has the whole afternoon from one to five ruined for him already. Every American adult is arranging his time on the pattern of the schoolboy - three o’clock for this, five o’clock for that, six-thirty for change of dress, six-fifty for entering the taxi, and seven o’clock for arriving at the destination. It just makes life not worth living.

【1】The writer objects to efficiency mainly on the grounds that it ____.

A. entitles us to too much leisure time

B. deprives us of leisure time

C. urges us to get things done punctually

D. imposes on us a perfect concept of time

【2】 In the eyes of the author, the introduction of industrial life gives rise to ____.

A. more emphasis on efficiency

B. magnificent idling of time

C. the excitement of life

D. terrifying schoolboy

【3】The passage tells us ____.

A. Chinese workers come to work when it is convenient

B. Americans ought not to work so hard for efficiency

C. Chinese engineers are on better terms with the management

D. all Americans are forced to be efficient against their will

【4】What is implied but NOT stated by the author is that ____.

A. every American is arranging his time in the pattern of a schoolboy

B. every American is reluctant to be efficient

C. every one should have some time to spend as he pleases

D. being punctual is an undesirable habit which should not be formed

While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

2In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries.3The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the disadvantages of Westerners philosophy.4So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

5Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

【题目】Dear Ms. Wang,

I am writing to inform you of some arrangements about my composition course and Latin course next year.

I’ve decided to re-establish the 5-paragraph essay as the goal for the composition course. I interviewed some of my former students and they all agreed that being able to write critically and continuouslywas important to them.

So next academic year, Term 1 will be like always: sentences to paragraphing. And Term 2 will work toward the 5-paragraph essay. The final 3 weeks of Term 2 will be reserved tointroduce writing for TOEFL and CEE. By that time, if the students have done their job correctly, then they should be able to write quite well.

As for the Latin course, I will post notices around campus next week so that the students will understand what’s on offer before I actually introduce the course. A number of students already emailed me about the course.

I am sure you don’t understand what a big deal our opening this program at our school is. People around the world are interested in what we plan to do. There are many rewards available to the students who succeed in the course. Please share what I have said with the administration. I want them to understand the importance of this course. The reason I have contacted these colleagues (actually Oxford contacted me) isthatI have confidence in our students and in myself. I know that when those professors meet our students and hear them speaking and reading Latin, they are going to be amazed. It will open all sorts of doors for students that they never even thought of knocking on.

Yours,
