Greenwich(格林威治)is on the River, five miles from the middle of London, and its history is two thousand years old. The first English people were fishermen there, and they named the place Greenwich, meaning“green village”. Later the English kings and queens lived at Greenwich in their beautiful places.

The name of the earliest palace was Placentia. Its windows were made of glass-the first in England. Henry Ⅷ lived there. He knew that England must be strong at sea. So he started two big ship-yards(船 坞)at Greenwich, and for 350 years the ships which were made there were the best in the world.

But trouble was coming to Greenwich. In 1649, a war started in England and for eleven years there was no king. The men who had worked for him at Placentia decided to live in the place themselves. They sold all its beautiful things, and bought small pieces of the palace garden with money. Finally, the war ended and King Charles Ⅱ came back. But Placentia was falling down. So King Charles built a new and bigger palace, which is now open to the public.

At this time, Charles was worried about losing so many of its ships at sea: their sailors did not know how to tell exactly where they were. So in 1675, Charles make John Flamsteed, the first astronomer(天文学家) in England, try to find the answer. Flamsteed worked in a new building on the high ground in Greenwich Park. From it with a telescope which he made himself, Flamsteed could look all round the sky. And he did, night after night, for twenty years. Carrying on Flamsteed’s work a hundred years later, an astronomer called Harrison finally made a clock which told the time at sea, and helped sailors to know where they were. Yoa can see Harrison’s clock, still working, in Greenwich’s museum of the sea. Because of Flamsteed’s work, every country in the world now tells its time by Greenwich time.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C,D)中,选出最佳选项。

The United States will introduce a new and comprehensive (综合的) exam for students who seek to study in America and other English-speaking countries, Xin Hua News Agency(新华社) reported from New York.

The exam, which stands for a great change from the current English level test, was disclosed by Theresa Chang-whei Jen, associate director of the International Service of the US College Board, America's leading educational organization.

The Advanced Placement International English Language ( APIEL) will be offered for the first time throughout the world on May 10, 2002, said Jen.

However, the APIEL is a strange title to most Chinese students, and it is unlikely to soon gain the similar popularity of other already existing exams, such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign language) , the GRE (Graduate Record Examination ), or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

“I have never heard of such a test and I would prefer the IELTS if I need another exam,”said Xu Jingyan, a graduating student from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (北京航天航空大学), who wants to study in England and has already taken the TOEFL.

Most of Xu's classmates have never heard of the APIEL.“The APIEL is designed for international students who wish to get university studies in English-speaking countries, including the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia.”said Jen.

The APIEL has been adopted, said Jen, because the TOEFL can no longer accurately (准确地) reflect the abilities of students to use the English language comprehensively in an academic environment. Xin Hua reported that a fairly large number of foreign students who earned high scores in TOEFL exam turned out to be very ordinary educational performers after admission(录取).

Compared with the TOEFL, the APIEL, measures a student's ability to read, write, speak and understand English through testing his or her skills in listening comprehension, speaking with accuracy (精确) and resourcefulness (机智), and writing with clarity (明晰) and fluency (流畅), Jen said.

[ ]

A.It will take quite a period of time for people to accept the APIEL.

B.The TOEFL is more popular with the Chinese than the IELTS.

C.A student will have to take the APIEL if he or she wants to study in English-speaking countries from 2002 on.

D.Chinese students will prefer the IELTS rather than the APIEL even in the future.

For most Chinese university students, the US is a favorite destination for further education. But apart from obstacles such as the GRE and TOEFL exams, choosing a good graduate school is no easy task.

Admission is very competitive for international students, so it is important to apply to a number of institutions to have a reasonable chance of acceptance.

Since the application to most universities requires a certain fee, Chinese students usually choose seven to seventeen universities according to their own financial circumstances.

Wang Yuwei, a Zhejiang University graduate, sent applications to 15 US universities.

When the 24-year-old began looking for a US graduate school in her senior year, she took time to compare the various schools and find the ones most suiting her needs. Now, studying at the University of Washington, she knows that her hard work paid off.

“To broaden your chances, at least one third of the applications should be to less selective schools,”said Wang.“Applicants shouldn’t limit their choices to the most famous institutions.”

Furthermore, one shouldn’t rely too much on college rankings such as the Gorman Report or US News & World Report’s annual league tables.

The right school is the one that best meets your own personal needs and interests, rather than someone else’s assessment of an institution’s prestige(声望).

“Usually choices are based on one’s personal interests and academic background, but it is important to make sure that your chosen subject is satisfied,”said Wang.

To get a better chance to go abroad, you’d better apply to a less selective school.

[ ]

A.

you must spend a lot of time comparing the various schools

it isn’t worthwhile to spend time looking for the right university

Just the mention of the TOEFL, GRE and GAMT exams brings a thought of long hours of dull paper work. But that idea is becoming increasingly out of date.As planned, computerized tests will begin next year which will bring a series of changes from test psychology to scoring techniques.

From computer - equipped rooms, examinees will answer the questions on a computer. If they are sure about their choices, they can pass to the next question by pressing the entry(条目)“next”.Then another question will be randomly(任意地)selected from a vast test item bank and appear on the screen. After answering all the questions, examinees can choose the entry“quit”if they are not satisfied with their performance, or“score”if they want to see the result.Scores will be calculated immediately and appear on the screen.By that point, student's marks are official-there is no going back.

Since they greatly shorten the painful waiting process-which used to be two or three months, computerized tests have won worldwide popularity.Besides, there will be no rushing to the registration offices(登记处)for these exams.Computerized tests will be given every workday in an exam center with all three kinds of tests being held in the same room. All test takers need to do is to call the exam center and book their seats for a particular day.

In addition it will become technically possible to apply new testing procedures. In the past, each examinee had the same set of test items despite differences in their ability.Under a computerized system, however, if the computer judges an answer is right, a question of a relatively difficult nature will follow. But if an examinee continues to give wrong answers and is judged as un-qualified by the computer system, he will be automatically denied the chance to go further in the test.

(1)

Computerized tests allow the examinee to know their scores ________.

[ ]

A.

immediately on a central computer for scoring test papers

B.

a few minutes after the exam with the help of a test center worker

C.

on the next day after they have taken the exam

D.

immediately after the exam by means of the same computer

(2)

If an examinee is not satisfied with his performance ________.

[ ]

A.

he can admit defeat and give it up

B.

he can ask the computer to give some advice

C.

he can ask another chance within a few days

D.

he is allowed to do it once again

(3)

Under a computerized system, all of the following would be possible except that ________.

[ ]

A.

different exams can be taken in the same room

B.

one doesn't need to rush to the registration officer for taking an exam

C.

it will be much easier to pass an examination

D.

one can take an exam almost at any time of the year

(4)

[ ]

A.

B.

C.

D.
