I grew up poor – living with six brothers, my father and a wonderful mother. We had 36 money and few worldly goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was 37 and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, they could 38 afford a dream.
My dream was to be a 39 . When I was sixteen, I could crush a baseball, throw a ninety – mile – per – hour fastball. I was also 40 : my high – school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who 41 me the difference between having a dream and showing strong belief. One particular 42 with him changed my life forever.
It was a summer and a friend recommended me for a summer 43 . This meant a chance for my first income – cash for a new bike and new clothes, and the 44 of savings for a house for my mother. The opportunity was attracting, and I wanted to 45 at it.
Then I realized I would have to 46 summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing. I was 47 about this.
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was as 48 as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said. “Your 49 days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.”
I stood before him with my head 50 , trying to think of how to explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth 51 his disappointment in me.
“How much are you going to make at this job?” he demanded.
“$ 3.25 an hour,” I replied.
“Well, is $ 3.25 an hour the price of a 52 ?” he asked.
That 53 laid bare for me the difference between wanting something right now and having a goal. I devoted myself to 54 that summer, and within the year I was offered a $ 20,000 contract. I signed with the Denver Broncos in 1984 for $ 1.7 million, and bought my mother the 55 of my dreams.

People say that housewives should have the 37 to make delicious meals, keep their houses clean, and 38 every minute of their child’s life. Their words used to upset me a lot. Not everyone is cut out to be a(n) 47 mom. I believe it’s okay to be the juice box mom. I may not bake cookies and decorate them beautifully, but I provided something to drink. And I think that’s just as important.

When responding to any adult, you must answer by saying “Yes ma’am” or “No, sir.” Just nodding your head is not acceptable.
Because I grew up in rural North Carolina, this rule comes 36 to me, and it seems the obvious choice to come first. If you want children to respect you, you have to let them know 37 . Simply telling them you want them to address you by saying “sir” lets them know 38 you expect them to treat you. I also tell my students it’s a very useful tool when 39 with adults, and furthermore it also 40 handy for any adult interacting with another adult. Case in point: I was 41 the phone recently with the phone company discussing the inaccuracies(差错) of my 42 . The lady I spoke to was not 43 and seemed annoyed. 44 , in the midst of the conversation, I threw in a “yes, ma’am,” and her entire 45 changed. She became far more helpful and 46 to deal with, and she 47 cutting my bill in half.
Some of my students in Harlem were to be 48 for a chance to attend a high-rated junior high school. The school only had thirty openings for the following year, and twelve of my students were 49 the many kids across the city who applied for the spots. I practiced what the interview would be 50 with my students, and one main thing I stressed was, “ 51 you say ‘yes ma’am’ or ‘no sir’ no matter what!” Weeks after the interviews, I was delighted to hear that all twelve of my students had been 52 . When I talked with the admissions director at the school, the main 53 he made over and over was how 54 my students were in their interviews. It seemed like just such a simple thing to do, but it gets 55 .

On Jan 23, 2012, I was aboard a ship on the Yangtze River, listening to the sound of fireworks and eating plate after plate of dumplings.
On Sunday Feb 10, 2013, I was preparing to celebrate Chinese New Year again – in London’s Chinatown.
It was raining. It was cold. But ever since I left Beijing in August, I had promised myself I would celebrate Chinese New Year – if only to help with my Beijing “homesickness”.
Central London was dressed up for the occasion. There was a stage for a big fireworks display for the evening. Even so, it wasn’t like my real Beijing chunjie.
Even buying a baozi didn’t cheer me up. It cost about 10 times as much as the real thing does in Beijing and got stuck to its rain-ruined paper bag.
Cold, wet and depressed, I ran into a shop for shelter. Suddenly, there it was. Between the packets of dried meat and fish, the bags of rice and the smell of dried noodles in this little Chinese supermarket, I had found home.
An hour later, I hurried into my house with bags of frozen jiaozi, packets of sauce and a large bottle of vinegar. I boiled water, tore open the packets, grabbed my chopsticks and settled down to a feast. This, I thought, is a Happy Chinese New Year.
I even watched the fireworks on TV. After all, why face the British weather when I can bring China home in one bite?
