Culture shock begins with the "honeymoon stage". This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from "jet lag" but we are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feed we are involved in some kind of great adventure.
Unfortunately, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, we can be very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival of rejecting or pulling away from the new culture.
The third stage is called the "adjustment stage". This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor.
The fourth stage can be called "at ease at last". Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don't know about. This is called "reverse culture shock". Surprisingly, this occurs when you back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!

Poorer children would be offered the chance to attend lessons on Saturday to help catch up with their middle class peers (同龄人), the shadow schools secretary, Michael Gove, said today. The Conservatives would give English state schools the freedom to choose to have longer teaching hours and extra classes at the weekend, he told the Association of Teachers and Lecturers’ annual conference.?
Gove said the move would help to close the achievement gap with richer children whose parents could afford extras such as tutoring and music lessons.?
He told delegates (代表) in Manchester: “For children who come from homes where parents don’t have the resources to provide additional stretch and cultural experiences, there are benefits in having those children in the learning environment, in school, for longer.”?
“Parents would love to have schools starting earlier in some circumstances, and certainly going on later in the afternoon, given the reality of their working lives,” he said. He held up the example of Kipp (Knowledge is Power Program) schools in the US, which are often based in the poorest communities and open from 7:30 am to 5pm on weekdays, plus Saturdays.?
But it would be up to schools to decide to offer longer hours, Gove added. ?
Parents said Saturday classes could become a “badge of dishonor” if pupils were forced to go, while teachers raised concerns about their workload.?
Margaret Morrissey, of Parents Outloud, said: “I think the suggestion the government made about one-to-one teaching for these kids would be a more preferable way of improving these children’s performance. I’m just not sure whether taking away a child at weekends is actually going to make them cleverer in the week.”?
The ATL’s general secretary, Mary Bousted, said: “If we want Saturday schools, then we need more teachers doing the extra hours, not the same teachers working longer.”?
51. The program is intended for children____________. ?
A. who are from middle-class families?
B. whose parents can’t afford extra help ?
C. who perform poorly academically ?
D. whose weekends are mostly unoccupied
52. “Additional stretch” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to_________.?
A. music lessons
B. physical relaxation ?
C. entertainment activities?
D. out-of-school improvement
53. Why did Gove mention Kipp schools in the US? ?
A. To make a comparison.?
B. To introduce a new program.?
C. To seek supportive evidence.?
D. To prove his program is better.
54. What is Margaret Morrissey’s opinion about the new program? ?
A. Favorable.          B. Doubtful.           C. Optimistic.         D. Acceptable.
55. Which of the following is true??
A. Teachers may not like the program. ?B. Schools are trying to make profits.?
C. The program is already under way.  D. The program is popular with children.

Even if you are naturally shy, these three tricks will help you to quickly build a new social circle in any new city.

1. Take pictures

One of the great things about taking pictures at an event or party is that it gives you an excuse to get in touch with the person later. Everybody loves seeing pictures of themselves, and it’s very easy after taking a picture to say “If you’d like I can email it to you”. This can be the seed that leads to new connections. The next time you hear about a fun event email your new contacts to let them know about it.

2. Eat alone in public

You might feel self-conscious eating by yourself but it has an important benefit: you are much easier to approach when you are alone. People may be afraid of interrupting you or being rude if you are in a conversation with someone else. Bring a book or newspaper to read (this will make you feel less self-conscious). Plus, having an interesting book with you will give others an excuse to start a conversation if they’ve read it.

3. Join a class, sports team, or club

Yoga, salsa dancing, volleyball, Toastmasters (a public speaking club), a class for work, etc. Take up a new hobby or continue an old one!

These are all great places to meet new people, primarily because you will be forced to see the same people over and over again in the class. You will automatically make friends with them if you have a common interest and are forced to see each other again.

Tips:

* In the beginning, never turn down an invitation from someone, even if it’s something you wouldn’t normally do.

* Email your new friends with fun things to do instead of always asking what their plans are. If they have a better plan you can drop yours and join them. This will help establish you as someone who is contributing value instead of just taking it (people want this in a friend).

* Don’t let little things in life upset you or be a negative person. People don’t want to be around someone like that!

1.________ can give you an excuse to start new connections.

A.Taking pictures of others

B.Eating by yourself in public

C.Reading interesting books

D.Joining group activities

2.When having meals, you’d better ________ if you want to make new friends.

A.approach others to show conscious friendliness

B.start a conversation with those who have friends aside

C.invite others to your apartment to eat together

D.sit on your own in public places

3.According to the text, which of the following is NOT mentioned as an advantage of joining a class?

A.It helps you find out people who share a common interest with you.

B.It helps you find out your interest and take up a new hobby.

C.It offers an opportunity to meet the same people repeatedly.

D.It is a good way to meet new people and make friends in a new city.

4.Which of the following pieces of advice is a tip from the text?

A.Try to be outgoing and talkative instead of being shy.

B.Never turn down an invitation from your friends.

C.Offer suggestions on how to spend time together.

D.Always give a positive response to any request.

5.By writing the text, the author intends to tell us ________.

A.why you should change when you move to a new city

B.how you can make new friends in a new city

C.why you should make new friends in a new city

D.how you can keep in touch with strangers

The Book of Life

So far, scientists have named about 1.8 million living species(物种),and that’s just a small number of what probably exists on Earth. With so many plants, animals, and other living things covering the planet,it can be tough to figure out what type of grass is growing by the roadside or what kind of bird just flew by.

A soon-to-be-started Web site might help.An international team of researchers has announced the creation of Web-based Encyclopedia(百科全书) of Life(EoL).The project aims to list every species on Earth in a single,easy-to-use reference guide.

To get the encyclopedia started, the creators will use information from scientific databases(数据库) that already exist. And eventually,in special sections of the site,non-scientists with specialized knowledge will come to help.Bird-watchers,for example, will be able to input what birds they’ve seen and where. To make sure the encyclopedia is accurate, scientists will review much of the information added to it.

As the EoL develops, you might find it useful for school projects. The site will feature(以……为特色)_____special pages for kids who are studying ecosystems in their neighborhoods.Another convenient feature of the EoL is that you’ll be able to pick the level of detail you want to see to match your interests, age, and knowledge.

It now takes years for scientists to collect all the data they need to describe and analyze species. The creators of the Encyclopedia of Life hope that their new fool will speed up that process.

1.The Web based EoL aims to _______.

A.find out what covers the earth

B.list all living things on Earth

C.work out the number of birds

D.save the existing plants

2.One characteristic of the EoL is that _______.

A.it is run by school students

B.it focuses on different types of grass

C.it provides different levels of information

D.it allows non-scientists to review its data

3.In the last paragraph,“that process”means _______.

A.analyzing species                         B.creating a new tool

C.collecting data                           D.describing species
