【题目】Sitting is an art that isn't getting passed along. People these days feel as though they have to be doing something. If they are not working, they are jogging, or playing tennis or golf to guard against illnesses, or taking courses to improve their minds or bodies -- or they are parked in front of the TV. Sitting in front of the TV isn't sitting -- it's watching.
People used to sit a whole lot. You would walk down the street or drive down the road, and there they would be, out on the doorsteps, sitting. You could go to the grocery to buy some garlic or some fruits and vegetables and sit on the bench out front m the summer or around the fire in the winter. You could go down to the store to buy an outer garment, an electric grill or anything else. There were sitting benches out in the town square. At the garage, there were straight-backed chairs. There among the oilcans and tires and spare parts, you could kick back and sit.
Houses used to have sitting rooms, where the grown-ups would go after Sunday dinner. Mom and Dad, Grandpa and Aunt Ruby would gather round, sit and digest (消化) the fried chicken and talk about Aunt Ethel’s illness, and how well the minister did today. They may just talk a load of garbage and even gesture with their hands when they become excited. Outside, the younger generation, the children would play on the ground, and the afternoon would pass by in a comfortable haze( 悠闲的氛围).
That sort of thing looks like doing nothing. A recharging battery (正充电的电池) doesn't look as if it's doing anything either. Sitting restores your soul. If you want to enjoy a truly full life, don't just do something--sit there.
【1】What message does the author try to get through to us?
A. People should make better use of their sitting room.
B. People should spend less time watching TV.
C. People should pass down their good habits.
D. People should take things easy for their own good.
【2】We can learn from the second paragraph that__________.
A. people lived a more restful life in the past
B. towns were built to make living convenient
C. small town garages had a lot to offer
D. people enjoyed going out for a drive
【3】The sitting room mentioned in the text used to be a place for___________.
A. eating food B. watching TV
C. gathering together D. playing with children
【4】From the text we know the writer believes____________.
A. sitting has a good spiritual effect

【题目】Directions : Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
When we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get a good score on a certain kind of test, or even the ability to do well in school. 【1】 The true test of intelligence is not how much we know how to do,but how we behave when we don’t know what to do.
The intelligent person, young or old, meeting a new situation or problem, opens himself up to it. He tries to take in with mind and senses everything he can about it. He thinks about it, instead of about himself or what it might cause to happen to him. If he fails to master it, he looks without fear or shame at his mistakes and learns what he can from them. This is intelligence. 【2】 Just as clearly, unintelligence is not what most psychologists seem to suppose, the same thing as intelligence, only less of it. It is an entirely different style of behavior, out of entirely set of attitudes.
Years of watching and comparing bright children with the not-bright,or less bright, have shown that they are very different kinds of people. The bright child is curious about life and reality, eager to get in touch with it, unite himself with it. 【3】 On the other hand, the dull child is far less curious, far less interested in what goes on and what is real. The bright child likes to experiment, to try things out. He lives by the maxim that there is more than one way to skin a cat. 【4】 The dull child is usually afraid to try at all, It takes a great deal of urging to get him to try even once; if that try fails, he is through.
A. Clearly its roots lie in a certain feeling about life.
B. If he can’t do something one way, he’ll try another.
C. He takes it for granted that he is the most intelligent guy in the world.
D. He continues his pursuit until he finally succeeds.
E. By intelligence we mean a style of life, a way of behaving in various situations.
F. There is no wall between himself and life.

【题目】阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
Silence is unnatural to man. He does all he can 【1】(make) a noise in the world, and he fears silence more than anything else. Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence. If he【2】(introduce) to another person, and a number of pauses occur in the conversation, he regards himself as【3】failure, and is full of envy of the emptiest-headed chatterbox (喋喋不休的人).He knows that ninety-nine percent of human conversation 【4】(mean) no more than the buzzing of a fly, but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure (蜡塑人像).
The aim of conversation is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are, it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz; there is even a buzz that is as【5】(annoy) as the continuous noise made by a mosquito (蚊子). But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito 【6】a quiet person. Most buzzing, fortunately, is pleasant to the ear. and some of it is pleasant even to the mind.
Those【7】 hate to pick up the weather as a【8】(conversation) opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk. Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of【9】(learn) anything new. Some of them are content if they are 【10】(mere) allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears.

【题目】 Laura Sides was a psychology major at the University of Nottingham in 2004. She first noticed signs of her dad’s developing dementia(痴呆) when she moved to Nottingham. She said, "Dad was a doctor, so he knew exactly what had happened to him, but people try to hide it when they are ill. Then, I came home for my 21st birthday and arranged to meet him, but he never showed up as he’d forgotten. That’s when I knew something serious had happened."
So, aged 21, she decided to leave university and look after him herself. She lived close by, popping in every day to make sure he was eating, and that the house was tidy, before heading off to her work.
Besides challenging moments, there was a time when looking after her dad was a pure joy. "We’d wake up, I’d ask what he wanted to do that day, and however ridiculous the adventure is, off we’d go."
Sadly, in 2009, 5 years later, Laura lost her father. Before he died, Laura went to a hospital appointment with him, where doctors mentioned that his form of Alzheimer’s disease was genetic meaning there was a fifty-fifty chance that she had inherited it. For several years Laura agonised over whether to be tested, finally finding out in August 2017 that she has the APP gene, meaning that, like him, she will develop the condition within a decade.
At first, she struggled, feeling as if her life lacked purpose. Then, during a sleepless night in the summer of 2018, she decided at around 2 a.m. to enter the 2019 London Marathon sponsored by the charities Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.
She hoped to start the conversation around early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and to encourage people to talk about it more openly. "I remember when Dad was ill, people wouldn’t know how to react, but I want to be honest and open," she added. "The more information we can get, the less of a taboo(忌讳) we will feel. That said, the support I’ve received so far after going public has been amazing — that’s what is carrying me through."
