    　　Two old soldiers who worked together in a Nazi salt mine more than 60 years ago have been reunited．Roddy Macpherson and Alex Morgan had not seen each other since the end of World War Ⅱ．

    　　Like other prisoners of war．Alex and Roddy experienced hard conditions in the mine．They sweated through 12 hours of hard labour every day．With just one loaf of bread every four days to live on．But they had each other．And as he hugged his old friend, Roddy, 88, said it was their friendship that helped them survive at the Stalag IXC camp．

    　　He added,“The only way you could get through prison camp life was with the help and support of your mates and Alex was one of strongest characters around．”

    　　In June 1840, Alex and Roddy were separately placed with the French 31st Infantry Division(步兵师)and the 2nd Armoured Division(装甲师)as they tried to regain the high ground at Abbeville, between Calais and Paris．They were defeated by the Germans and the two men were both caught．

    　　The two soldiers were separated a year before the war ended．When Roddy was sent to the U.K. because of poor health．Alex didn't leave the camp until the war ended．

    Make Up Your Mind to Succeed

    Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure．The generation (age) born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores (marks) and performance (show) were played down because “everyone's winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive than ever before．As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”

    Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years．Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it．Here's how they work:

    　　A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic – you're a born artist, point guard, or numbers person．The fixed mind-set believes it's sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame．When things get difficult, it's quick to blame (liability), lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.

    　 On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible．Because the ego (自尊) isn't on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame．When faced with a difficulty, it's quick to rethink, change and try again．In fact, it enjoys this experience.

    　　We are all born with growth mind-sets．(Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise．Dweck's book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth．But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.

    Disease, poverty, hate, love－Charles Dickens’ stories opened his readers eyes to the most important themes of his age. Two hundred years on, his stories still speak volumes across the world, proving that Dickens’ legacy（遗产） was far greater that just “great-literature”. February 7 marks the 200th anniversary of the writer’s birthday. To mark this date, BBC writer Alex Hudson listed six things Dickens gave the modern world. Let’s take a look at two of them.

    A White Christmas

    Dickens is described as “the man who invented Christmas” － not the religious festival, but the cultural aspects that we associate with the festive season today. In the early 19th century, Christmas was barely worth mentioning, according to critic and writer Leigh Hunt. The committee which ran the Conservative Party even held ordinary business meetings on Christmas Day－unthinkable in the West nowadays, when everyone but the most necessary workers takes at least three days off. Many people believe that Dickens’ popular descriptions of the festive period became a blueprint for generations to come. In his classic novel, A Christmas Carol, he not only put forward the idea of snow at Christmas, but also painted a picture of glowing warmth－“home enjoyments, affections and hopes”. In his biography of Dickens, Peter Ackroyd wrote: “Dickens can be said to have almost single-handedly created the modern idea of Christmas.”

    Dickens was one of the first to take an honest look at the underclass and the poor of Victorian London.
