How to show respect to your co-workers

If you want to reduce the stress in your work environment, one of the best things you can do is to respect your co-workers. Showing respect will earn you respect. 1. Respect is the first building block for the success of a relationship.

Use your manners. Greet your co-workers as you enter and exit your work place. Always use “please”, ”thank you” and “pardon me “.If you do ,all of your requests will be seen as just that, and not orders. 2. It means everything from covering your mouth when you sneeze or yarn ,to holding a door open or an elevator open when you see a co-worker coming.

Make a pleasant small talk, but don’t go too far with this concept. You don’t have to talk for hours or know everything about your co-workers .Generally, people feel more comfortable in working environments where they know each other.

Lend a helping hand. This doesn’t mean that you have to be a martyr(受苦者). Don’t always take the “that’s not my job.” attitude. If you are having a particularly light day ,or you see one of your co-workers drowning in work, offer to help. 3. It will probably make you feel good too.

Apologize if you are wrong and be humble. No one likes a show off. You can talk about the good characteristics, traits, and relationships in your life without making people feel like you are better than them. 4. Co-workers will take notice.

5. Being positive not only lifts your spirits, but also lifts the spirits of those around you .No one wants to be around someone who is constantly negative or always complaining.

A. Manners can be actions as well.

B. Speak encouraging words to others.

C. Actually some co-workers don’t need our respect.

D. Your co-workers will appreciate your generous efforts.

E. Avoid standing , sitting or talking too close to someone.

F. It also allows you to get to know and befriend your co-workers.

G. No one is perfect, but what makes up your character is how you handle your mistakes.

Every year in America, high-school students who want to go on to college take a national examination called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT in a shortened way. Their score is an important factor in determining which colleges will admit them. The Scholastic Aptitude Test measures one’s mathematical ability and use of the English language. Traditionally, the English part involved grammatical questions and paragraphs that test reading comprehension.

But the SAT folks have added a single question, to be answered in an essay, handwritten on the spot. That’s an interesting way to test writing ability, but content aside. Have you ever seen young people’s handwriting lately? Or anyone’s for that matter, in this age of computer keyboards? Students write numbers and sign their names on bank checks. They scribble class notes in what can generously be described as the written word.

Yet today’s kids are asked to write, thoughtfully and clearly, for several minutes on this SAT Test. Good luck to the text scorers who must work out difficultly the scrawl(潦草的笔迹)of young people who’ve been typing on computers since the age of three! Teachers insist that good handwriting can not only help one’s score on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers. And don’t forget, we all have to use handwriting from time to time, as computers go down when the power goes out.

Then how to improve the handwriting? Well, with a few simple steps you can improve your handwriting.[来Position the pen. You should hold the pen between the forefinger and the thumb. You should then rest it near the first knuckle(指节)of the middle finger. The rest of your fingers should be curled(卷曲)under your hand and your hand should remain relaxed.

Evaluate your writing. What do you like and what don’t you like about the way you write? Make changes to your letters till you like how they look.

Take your time. Make sure that, while you are writing, you take your time. Speed can definitely make your writing terrible. If it is worth writing well, then take your time.

Practice. Practice it a lot; it’s not enough to do it once and hope for the best. It has to be something you work at to make great improvements.

Even if you are saying and doing the right things at your job and in your personal life, you could be making a bad impression on everyone with what you don’t say. That’s because much of our reactions to others are based on body language. If your body language is communicating a negative message, that’s the message you could be sending, regardless of what actual words come out of your mouth.

What are negative messages sent via body language? Things like having arms folded across your chest can show hostility(敌意). Lack of eye contact can indicate shiftiness(奸诈). An unsmiling face could communicate a variety of things, like anger, disappointment, or sadness, depending upon what other facial expressions are included.

Want to know what body language communicates? Watch a TV show or a movie with the sound off, and see how much you can figure out of the plot, or at least you can get a sense of what is going on.

However, many of the clues that indicate negativity could also be the result of nervousness or other issues. For example, somebody who doesn’t make eye contact could simply be nervous. The same goes with a not-so-warm hand-shake. Or, someone folding his arms could simply be more comfortable with the arms that way, not realizing what the arms’ position sends. Someone who doesn’t smile could be self-conscious about her teeth. At any rate, the person who sends off bad body language may not even realize that they’re doing it.

Unfortunately, some people who do recognize what body language communicates are scam(骗局) artists. They may have the firmest handshake, the shiniest smile, and make the greatest eye contact to convince others of their sincerity, because they know how much this nonverbal communications plays a part in communicating sincerity. Yet people fall for it, because their body language seems sincere.

But what if you’re in the opposite situation? If you’re not sure what your body language is communicating, ask a trusted friend for help. You can also concentrate on standing up straight and sitting up straight, if posture(姿势) is a problem. Practicing in front of a mirror can help you get rid of bad habits. Remember to smile and nod if needed. And try to learn how to relax. Before you know it, you will be sending more positive messages with your body language.

1.A serious face could indicate a lot of different information________.

A. especially anger and disappointment

B. together with the arms folded across

C. together with other facial expressions

D. depending on others’ facial expressions

2.The underlined expression “ fall for it ” ( paragraph 5) probably means _______.

A. be taken in B. be fully used

C. be used to it D. like it soon

3.A not-so-warm handshake may represent_______.

A. fear B. excitement

C. confidence D. nervousness

4.Which would be the best title for this passage?

A. Facial Expressions and Messages

B. Be Careful of False Body Language

C. Is Your Body Language Hurting You?

D. What Can Body Language Communicate?

Pupils remember more and behave better when 3D images are used in lessons, research suggests. They are quicker to learn and absorb new concepts, and display higher levels of concentration.

Professor Anne Bamford,of the University of the Arts,London, studied the effectiveness of 3D content in 15 schools across seven countries, including the UK.Pupils in 3D classes can remember more than those in the 2D classes after four weeks, improving test scores by an average of 1 7 percent compared with eight percent for 2D lessons. They gave more detailed answer to the tasks and were more likely to think in 3D, using hand gestures and mime(模仿动作) to answer the test questions successfully.

The teachers commented that the pupils in the 3D groups had deeper understanding, increased attention span, more motivation and higher engagement in the lessons.

Children are used to 3D with the rise of computer games that use the technology—90 percent of those in the study had seen a 3D film.Schools would need 3D—enabled projectors(投影仪),laptops with good picture capabilities,3D software and glasses for children to introduce animations(动作) into classrooms.

But Danny Nicholson,an educationist, said the technology would be impractical to use in schools and could be costly. He said,“While I think the idea of 3D technology is very interesting, I worry that 3D is a bit of an expensive gimmick(小玩意儿).There are a few cases where a true 3D image might help, but most of the time, good 2D models that can be moved would be just as effective.”

In the US,one school district in Colorado is already in the process of having 1.000 3D projectors fixed in classrooms. And the University of Caledonia, which carries out scientific research into the Lake Tabon Basin has used 3D presentations with Grade Six pupils. Those who watched the 3D presentations were more engrossed and reported a general increase in their interest in science compared with students who watched the 2D version.

1.What is the main idea of the first three paragraphs?

A.There are slight differences between 3D and 2D images.

B.Pupils perform better when 3D images are used in classes.

C.Schools have difficulties in making full use of 3D technology.

D.3D technology is always more effective than 2D technology.

2.Danny Nicholson holds the view that 3D_____.

A.is of no help in classes

B.has a bright future in classes

C.is more practical than 2D models

D.may not be affordable for schools

3.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.3D technology will replace 2D models in the future.

B.Many pupils are now more Interested In science than before.

C.Teachers will use the 3D technology through specific training.

D.3D will soon be put into use in one school district in Colorado.

4.The underlined word “engrossed” in the last paragraph means_____.

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know,we're while we're eating; we sit in the car and we sit while we watch TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.

New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Smith, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.

However, Mr. Smith says that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often, “We can't throw away physical activity. It's extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.”

Mr. Smith and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality(死亡率)or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There's only been a few of them, actually five or six now, in the last four or five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one-point four years to life.

Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they work. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk.” A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving. That's one of the strategies that many companies are using now.

Mr. Smith also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.

1.The underlined word “ubiquitous” is closest in meaning to________.

A.dangerous B. awkward

C.comfortable D. common

2.Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Smith?

A. Sitting too long may help increase one's life.

B.Exercise is important and don't sit too long.

C.Watching TV is bad, but can broaden one's horizons.

D.Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task.

3.What does Mr. Smith think of his study in Paragraph 4?

A.It's a relatively new area of study.

B.It's a hot subject studied by experts.

C.It's a study that begins too late.

D.It's not ignored by many experts.

4.Why are the desks of all kinds designed for those who sit more?

A.To give them more comfort.

B.To improve their work efficiency.

C.To offer them the chance to exercise.

D.To seek pleasure while working.
