【题目】 Teenagers have their own TV channels websites and magazines. So what about books

Last year one publisher Martins started publishing a series called Waves. We spoke to the director Julia Smith. She explained "Teenage fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been very successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books. Now they're realizing that teenagers are just older children but are not adults either. They are often not interested in adult fiction. For this series we are looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.

Athene Gorr's novel was published in the series last year and is selling well. Its title is The Purple Ring. She says "The important thing is to encourage teenagers to pick up your book. I'm a new writer. Although I've got an unusual name which people might remember nobody knows it yet! But my book has a fantastic cover which makes people want to look inside. Then they realize what an excellent story it is!"

And what do teenagers themselves think about the series We talked to Sophie Clarke aged 15. She said "I've read a few books in the Waves series. They say they are for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that. We're not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties. I like them and I think they look really good too. The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children section lots of teenagers won't find them so they may not do very well. And it's a shame there's no such series as I think lots of teenagers especially boys might buy."

A.The Waves series are suitable for adults.

【题目】 The UN’s Millennium Development Goals included the ambition that by 2015 all the world’s children would complete primary school. This has largely been achieved: nine out of ten children are now enrolled. 1 Even though most of the world’s children go to school, an awful lot of them learn pretty much nothing there. According to a recent World Bank study of seven sub-Saharan African countries, half of nine-year-olds cannot read a simple word and three-quarters cannot read a simple sentence. 2

Several recent studies suggest education technology can help. It seems to bring about bigger improvements in poor countries than in rich ones.

3 That doesn’t mean buying computers for schools in the hope that children will understand how to use them, a stupidity on which plenty of money has been wasted. Instead, it means providing schools with software that children can use with minimal help from an adult. The software gets things right more often than the teachers do, adjusts itself to the child’s ability, and sends teachers instructions about what they are supposed to be teaching. 4

Technology is no panacea(万灵药) . 5 And authorities need to take teachers into account. But education technology can help greatly — by monitoring pupils and teachers alike, assisting the best teachers and, most important, making up for the failings of the worst.

A. The reason is terrible teaching.

B. The achievements are really great.

C. However, the figure is not as impressive as it sounds.

D. Technology plays more and more important role in teaching.

E. Good traditional teachers are not outdated, and are never likely to be.

F. Meanwhile it allows the authorities to check on whether the teacher is in the classroom.

G. Some of the scarce resources being spent on teachers could therefore be better spent on education technology.

The big day had finally arrived. I had won the local speech contest (比赛), representing Madison Middle School. Here it was the state competition. I waited backstage for the host to announce My name.

Even though I had practiced much, I was extremely nervous. My heart was thumping, my palms were sweating, and my mouth was dry. “Calm down,” I told myself. Still, picturing an audience of teachers, parents and classmates made me want to disappear totally.

Mr. Patrick, who taught me to give speeches, reminded me, “You’ll do great. You’re prepared. You’ve come this far.”

Mr. Patrick was right. I was ready for this, and besides, I won first place in the earlier contests. Yet, when I pictured all eyes on me waiting for me to mess up, my heart was gradually sinking into my stomach.

“You can’t back out now,” I told myself as Mr. Nichols, the host, announced my name and the title of my speech, “My Hero.”

请你写出接下来主人公演讲的过程,以及演讲结束后激动的心情。

The big moment came.
