While all my classmates seen to be crazy about a one-way ticket to Mars(火星),I’d rather say Mars is totally unsuitable for human existence.People won’t have enough food supplies there, and the terrible environment would make it impossible for them to live a long life.Besides, the journey won’t be safe. Can anybody explain to me just why people would go to Mars, never to return?

  Steve Minear, UK

Here are the things you can think of:the desire to explore a foreign and unique environment, the excitement of being the first humans to open up a new world, the expectation of fame and glory…For scientists there is another reason.Their observations and research will probably lead to great scientific achievements.

  Donal Trollop, Canada

There are already too many people on the Earth.I think that sometime before the end of the century, there will be a human colony(殖民地)on Mars.It will happen when people finally realize that tow-way trips to the red planet Mars are unnecessary. Most of the danger of space Flight is in the launches(发射)and landings.Cutting the trip home would therefore reduce the danger of accidents, save a lot of money, and open the way to building an everlasting human settlement on another world.

Enough supplies can be sent on ahead. And every two years more supplies and more people will needs, and Mars is far more pleasant than the other planets in the outer space.

  Paul Davies.USA

Former US. Vice President A1 Gore, who came close to winning the presidency two years ago, said he will not run in 2004, and probably will not have another opportunity to seek the White House.

Though Gore would have been a frightening Democratic(民主党的)main runner, his decision to give up the 2004 race probably helped his party' s chances in the general election against President George W. Bush, Democrats said.

Many did not want to see Bush-Gore Ⅱ.

“The last campaign was an extremely difficult one,” Gore told CBS TV show “60 Minutes”. on Sunday.

While saying he still had the energy and drive to run again, Gore recognized, “There are a lot of people within the Democratic Party who felt exhausted (by the 2000 race)… who felt like, OK, ‘I don't want to go through that again.’ And I'm frankly sensitive to that feeling.”

In nearly two dozen interviews after Gore announced his plans, Democrats dutifully claimed their party had lost a top candidate, but one after another, they praised Gore for taking an early exit from a primary race he could have won, sparing them a repeat.

Gore, 54, said he was making his decision “in the full understanding that it probably means that I will never have another opportunity to run for president.”

Party activists(激进主义分子)blamed Gore for losing despite a booming economy and eight years of a Democratic administration. Gore even lost his home state of Tennessee; a victory there would have given him the White House.

It doesn't matter when or how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That's what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin.

Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. He was 90 years old when doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They expected to find out that he needed sleep of some kind. But they were surprised. Dubai, the Gulf desert city state, which is well-known for its huge projects before it was hit by the global financial crisis, on Saturday announced a new development to open the world’s biggest mall and a park larger than London’s Hyde Park.
The ruler of the Gulf desert city state, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, announced the plan for a “new city within Dubai”, according to an official statement, naming it after himself. Dubai already has countless malls and hotels, including the Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination, with 62 million visitors this year. “The malls and hotels available at present in Dubai need to be enlarged in line with the future ambitions for the city,” Sheikh Mohammed said in the statement.

Dubai’s tourism is growing by 13 percent a year, according to the statement, with hotel occupancy(入住率) hitting 82 percent in 2011 while hotel profits grew 22 percent last year, more than$4.4 billion.
