【题目】The House at Pooh Corner
by A. A. Milne
I bought a box set of four Winnie the Pooh books while on holiday when I was eight years old. I adored Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore. They became very real to me and I credit them with starting a lifelong love of reading.
I still have the box set, and loved reading the stories to my children when they were small. Part of me secretly believes A. A. Milne’s wonderful characters are all alive and well and still having their adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood.
—Roberta Smith
Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights
by Charlotte and Emily Bront
I can never separate Charlotte Bront’s Jane Eyre and Emily Bront’s Wuthering Heights when I think about books that have stayed with me. Both had a deep impact on me when I read them as a teenager.
They were the first classic books I read purely for pleasure, rather than because I had to for school.
I grew up in Yorkshire, not far from where the Bronts lived, so part of me really understood that depressing landscape. That close geographical connection led to a lifelong interest in the authors as much as in the books themselves.
I wrote a high-school essay on the contrasts and similarities between Charlotte and Emily and their heroines. I’d be fascinated to read that essay now to see what conclusions I reached as a 17-year-old.
— Jane Lee

【题目】 Dale Carnegie(戴尔·卡耐基) was an American writer and lecturer, and the developer of famous courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking and interpersonal skills.
Born in 1888 in Maryville, Missouri, Carnegie was a poor farmer's boy. His family moved to Belton, Missouri when he was a small child. In his teens, though still having to get up at 4 am every day to milk his parents' cows, he managed to obtain an education at the State Teacher's College in Warrensburg. His first job after college was selling correspondence courses. He moved on to selling bacon, soap, and lard(猪油)for Armour&Company.
After saving $500, Dale Carnegie quit sales in 1911 in order to achieve a lifelong dream of becoming a lecturer. He ended up instead attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, but found little success as an actor. Later he got the idea to teach public speaking. In his first session, he suggested that students speak about "something that made them angry", and discovered the technique that made speakers unafraid to address a public audience. From its beginning, the Dale Carnegie Course developed. Carnegie had made use of the average American's desire to have more self-confidence.
Perhaps one of Carnegie's most successful marketing moves was to change the spelling of his last name from "Carnagey" to Carnegie, at a time when Andrew Carnegie was a widely recognized name.
Carnegie's works include Lincoln the Unknown (1932), Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business (1937), and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living (1948). His greatest achievement, however, was when Simon &. Schuster published How to Win Friends and Influence People. The book was a bestseller from 1936. By the time of Carnegie's death, the book had sold five million copies in 31 languages, and there had been 450,000 graduates of his Dale Carnegie Institute.
Carnegie died at his home in New York in 1955.
【1】What do you think of Dale Carnegie's childhood?
A. Joyful.B. Difficult.
C. Lonely.D. Boring.

C. Teaching people speaking skills.
D. Advising people to live happily.
【3】Why did Dale Carnegie change his last name?
A. To get more help and support.

【题目】The Women’s Institute is urging supermarkets to do more to help consumers reduce their home food waste, after a survey of its own membership showed widespread confusion about “best before” and “use by” labeling(标签) on packaging.
Its new analysis of products on supermarket shelves found that “once-opened” instructions were often contradictory and often failed to make clear whether they were a guide to food safety or quality. Only 45% of 5,000 WI members surveyed understood that best-before dates were a sign of food quality, while 26% did not understand that the more important use-by dates were a decisive guide to food safety.
In its report on food waste, the WI said supermarkets were “potentially contributing to home food waste by leading customers to buy more food than they need, and giving conflicting and confusing on-pack information that leaves customers unsure about how long a product remains safe to eat in the home setting”. The 42-page report is part of the WI’s ongoing campaign to reduce food waste. To underline the point about conflicting information, it cites(引用) a can of Sainsbury’s own-brand sweetcorn advising consumers to eat it within one day of opening, while a similar tin from Waitrose gave consumers two days to finish it. Green Giant sweetcorn, however, has no specified date for eating once opened.
Marylyn Haines Evans, chair of the Women’s Institute’s public affairs said: “WI members are some of the more informed members of society about food and cookery, but they are still confused about food labelling and ‘once-opened’ information. So we would like supermarkets to extend the amount of time that consumers have to use a product in their homes by making all of their once-opened instructions on product packaging consistent, and completely remove once-opened instructions on products where food safety is not an issue.”
【1】What mainly leads to food waste according to WI?
A. Poor quality of food.
B. Attractive packaging of products.
C. Competition among supermarkets.
D. Consumers’ confusion about on-pack information.
【2】Which of the following can inform you of food safety?
A. B.
C. D.
【3】Why are the three supermarkets mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To attract more consumers.
B. To compare their products.
C. To comment on their service.
D. To make WI’s report convincing.
【4】What does Evans suggest supermarkets do about reducing food waste?
A. Extend life of a product.
B. Turn to well-informed WI members.
C. Give consistent once-opened instructions.
D. Remove instructions on product packaging.
