Dear Editor,

Im writing to tell you about the discussion weve had about whether passengers who ride in a car driven by a drunken driver should be punished. The minority of the students hold the opinion that punishing the passengers helps to reduce traffic accidents and increase traffic safety. Not to ride in a car driven by a drunken driver is not only a responsible behavior for passengers themselves but also for the drivers and other people on the road.

The majority of the students, however, disapprove of the idea, stating that it is difficult for common passengers to know whether the driver has been drinking or not.Whats more, even if the passenger knows the driver has drunk alcohol and has attempted to persuade the driver not to drive, it is unfair to punish the passenger when the driver does not follow the advice. As far as I am concerned, punishing passengers as well as the drivers is not only unfair but is also hard to carry out.

Yours sincerely,

Li Yan

The minority of the students hold the opinion that punishing the passengers helps to reduce traffic accidents and increase traffic safety. The majority of the students, however, disapprove of the idea, stating that it is difficult for common passengers to know whether the driver has been drinking or not. What’s more, even if the passenger knows the driver has drunk alcohol and has attempted to persuade the driver not to drive, it is unfair to punish the passenger when the driver does not follow the advice. The majority of (多数)、The minority of (少数);not only but also(不仅而且);it is+adj+ for sb to do sth(做某事对于某人来说很);Whats more(更重要的);As far as I am concerned(就我所知);as well as (也);carry out(实现)等。

Should parents ever hit their children?

Research suggests many of us are likely to respond “no”, and public support for spanking(打屁股) has been falling over the yearsBut surveys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit to spanking their child at least once

I was raised in a zero-tolerance home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishmentAnd, no, I don' t feel I was damaged by it

Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children

But there is data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn't the answer

Two years ago, Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents used physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive

Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decadesHe said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peersIt may be that children with lower IQs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterproductive (反作用的) to their mental development, as well

Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks (用巴掌打) on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit

Last year, Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens who have never spankedThere are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punishedGunnoe’s research suggests they don' t turn out any better than those who were sometimes spanked

There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers (脾气).But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline without ever turning to physical punishment

1According to the first three paragraphs, the author was probably hit by her parents when .

A. they were dissatisfied with her grade

B. she showed no respect for the elder

C. they cannot control their temper

D. their discipline turns out to be not strict enough

2According to Murray Straus, children who are physically punished ____ __

A. are less aggressive toward others when they get older

B. have slower physical development

C. benefit from occasional spanking

D. may develop lower IQs than their peer

3Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

A. 40 percent of children grow up without ever being spanked

B. Children who suffer less physical punishment are better students

C. Occasional open-handed spanking on the bottom are mentally harmful

D. Researchers disagree over whether smacking is mentally harmful to children

Some years ago industries had more freedom than they have now, and they did not need to be as careful as they must today. They did not need to worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed. They did not have to pay much attention to the health and safety of the people who worked for them. Often new products were dangerous for the people who used them; often conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers.

Of course sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of governments and which showed the need for changes. Also scientists who were doing research into the health of workers sometimes produced information that governments could not ignore. At such times, there were inquiries into the causes of the disasters or the problems. New safety rules were often introduced as a result of these inquiries; however, the new rules came too late to protect the people who died or who became seriously ill.

Today many governments have special departments that protect customers and workers. In the U.S., for example, there is a department that tests new airplanes and gives warnings about possible problems. It also makes the rules that aircraft producers must follow. Another department controls the foods and drugs that companies sell. A third department looks at the places where people work, and then reports any companies that are breaking the laws which protect the health and safety of workers. Of course, new government departments and new laws cannot prevent every accident or illness, but they are having some good results. Our work places are safer and cleaner than before. The planes and cars that we use for travel are better. Producers are thinking more about the safety and health of the people who buy and use their products.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

A. Conditions in the work place.

B. The freedom of industries in the past.

A. workers often got ill because of the poor working conditions

B. companies were free to put out any products they wanted to

C. many people were killed by dangerous products

D. industries were as careful in management as they are today

【3】It is implied in the passage that ____________.

A. governments and companies had different opinions about the safety of products

B. governments paid little attention to the safety of products.

C. government officials often did not listen to scientists

D. in the past no safety laws were introduced by governments

【4】The special departments protect customers and workers in many ways EXCEPT by ____.

A. testing new products

B. designing new products

C. controlling the sale of products
