Peru

To assist community projects in Cusco and Lima with resources(资源)to improve these kids lives

Our project in Cusco is busy fundraising for a reading room so that the kids in their care don't have to work on the floor anymore. Our project in Cusco is also creating their own bakery so that they can raise funds for themselves. The bakery still needs an industrial mixer to get things going and your funds will go towards helping them become self-sufficient(自足).

Thailand

To assist our projects in Thailand recover from the floods that hit last year

Now that the flood waters are subsiding, it's all hands on deck to clear up the mess left behind, repair damaged possessions and get schools up and running so that kids can return. We're looking to raise funds for the simple things such as paint to redecorate but also to replace larger equipment such as cookers and computers that have been ruined in the floods.

Kenya

To help our projects in Kenya with much needed resources to build simple homes for those that don't have one

Many people in Kenya still live in badly-built, over-crowded buildings. This project uses volunteer power to help build proper homes and facilities(设施) for communities. The projects are only slowed by a lack of physical resources and we're raising funds to help provide more wood, tools and other equipment so that more people can move above the poverty line.

The day after news broke of a possible revolution in physics ——particles (粒子) moving faster than light ?a scientist leading the European experiment that made the discovery calmly explained it to a standing-room- only crowd at CERN.
The physicist, Dario Auterio, did not try to explain what the results might mean for the laws of physics, let alone the broader world. After an hour of technical talk, he simply said, "Therefore, we present to you today this difference, this unusualness."
But what unusualness it may be.From 2009 through 2011, the massive OPERA detector (探测器)buried in a mountain in Gran Sasso, Italy, recorded subatomic particles called neutrinos ( 中微子) arriving faster than light can move in an empty space. The neutrinos generated at CERN are hardly detectably early. If confirmed, the finding would throw more than a century of physics into disorder.
"If it's correct, it's phenomenal." said Rob Plunkett, a scientist at Fermilab, the Department of Energy physics laboratory in Illinois."We'd be looking at a whole new set of rules" for how the universe works. Those rules would bend, or possibly break, Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity, published in 1905.Basical at the time, the theory tied together space and time, matter and energy, and set a hard limit for the speed of light, later measured to be about 186, 000 miles per second.
No experiment in 106 years had broken that speed limit.Physicists expect strict study to follow, which OPERA and CERN scientists welcomed.
Fermilab operates a similar experiment, called MINOS, that shoots neutrinos from Illinois to an underground detector in Minnesota. In 2007, MINOS discovered a just detectable amount of faster than-light neutrinos, but the permissible difference of error was too big to "mention" , Plunkett said.
Fermilab scientists will reanalyze their data, which will take six to eight months. In 2013, the MINOS detector, now offline, will restart after an upgrade. It could then offer confirmation of the results.
【小题1】Why are the European scientists not sure about the results of the experiment?

A.Because they are so unexpected.
B.Because the scientists do not believe them.
C.Because the scientists are careful and calm.
D.Because they are against the present law of physics.
【小题2】The underlined word " phenomenal" in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning to          .
A.amazingB.attractiveC.embarrassingD.sensitive
【小题3】The best title for the passage may be _____.
A.Are the laws of physics in disorder?
B.Particles faster than light; Revolution or mistake?
C.Faster than light measurement: right or wrong?
D.Is Einstein's theory still right today?
【小题4】What may be discussed in the paragraphs to follow?
A.Different opinions about the experiment.
B.How Albert Einstein's theory developed.
C.The new rules for how the universe works.
D.How Fermilab scientists will reanalyze their data.

When Hurricane Phailin hit India in late 2013, it became the largest storm to strike the subcontinent in over a decade. The storm affected more than 12 million people in India and neighboring countries, and damaged or destroyed many houses. However, good news is that cleverly-designed beach house created by architect Ray Huff can survive such strong winds and storm waves.

Located on the shore of an Indian island, Huff’s award-winning cube-shaped beach house was built to replace one smashed to pieces by Hurricane Phailin.

Huff pointed out that many houses built along shoreline were poorly constructed, and enforcement(执行) of building codes wasn’t strict. After Phailin’s attack, all new shoreline houses are required to meet stricter, better-enforced codes. The new beach house should be able to stand a Category 3 hurricane with peak winds of 179 to 209 kilometers per hour.

At first sight, Huff's house looks anything but hurricane-proof. Its redwood shell makes it resemble “a large party lantern” at night, according to one observer. But looks can be misleading. The house’s wooden frame is reinforced(加固) with long steel rods to give it extra strength.

To further protect the house from hurricane damage, Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on pilings---long columns of wood anchored(固定) deep in the sand. Pilings might appear insecure, but they are strong enough to support the weight of the house. They also balance the house above storm waves. The pilings allow the waves to run under the house instead of running into it. “These swells of water come ashore at great speeds and cause most of the damage done to beach-front buildings,” said Huff.

Huff designed the wooden pilings to be partially hidden by the house’s ground-to-roof shell. “The shell masks the pilings so that the house doesn’t look like it’s standing with its pant legs pulled up,” said Huff. In case of a storm wave, the shell should break apart and let the waves rush under the house, the architect explained.

1.After Hurricane Phailin, new houses built along shore line are required_____.

A. to be easily reinforced ????????????? ?????????????

B. to look smarter in design

C. to meet stricter building standards?

D. to be designed in the shape of cubes

2.The award-winning beach house is quite strong because____.

A. it is made of redwood

B. it is in the shape of a shell

C. it is strengthened by steel rods ?????????????

D. it is built with wood and stones

3.Huff raised the house 2.7 meters off the ground on wooden pilings in order to _____.

A. support the weight of the house

B. allow the waves to run through the house

C. anchor stronger pilings deep in the sand

D. prevent water from rushing into the house

4.The main function of the shell is_____.

A. to give the house a better appearance

B. to strengthen the pilings of the house

C. to protect the wooden frame of the house

D. to slow down the speed of the swelling water

There is only one winner and in this case it is Gina Rinehart who has won it all. In her own words, "beauty is an iron mine", Gina suggested her recipe for glory and fame. She has been announced as the richest woman of the world by BRW (formerly Business Review Weekly) in May 2012. Let's read more about her life and journey to the top.

Georgina "Gina" Hope Rinehart was born on 9th February, 1954 in Perth, Western Australia, to Hope Margaret Nicholas and Lang Hancock, the mining king. Her father discovered one of the world's biggest reserves in the early 1950s. Gina gained lots of knowledge of the iron-ore industry while working with her father. She married an Englishman Greg Milton, at the age of 19 and together they had two children, John Langley and Bianca Hope. Soon the marriage broke off and she remarried in 1983. Frank Rinehart and Gina had two children: Ginia and Hope. Frank died in 1990. Since then, Gina has devoted herself to her work and empire.

She was the sole heir (唯一继承人) of her family's wealth. Then after her father died in 1992, she started her professional career as the Executive Chairman of Hancock Prospecting Pty Limited (HPPL) and other privately owned group of companies. At that time, the company centered its functioning to mining-related explorations and accumulation of vast mining leases (租约). From there, Rinehart worked her way towards transforming the leases into profit earning mines. She also worked together with other companies to raise capital. Her efforts made the business increase three times in 2011 as much as before.

At home, Rinehart was working to expand the family business, but she did not satisfy herself with it. In 2010, she stepped into the media industry by acquiring 10% stake (股份) in Ten Network Holdings. Afterwards, she went on to hold stake in Fairfax Media, proving that mining is not her only interest. In June 2012, by increasing her stake in Fairfax to 18.67%, she became the largest stakeholder in the company. With this, she now stands at the head of $US 29.3 billion worth of an empire. Two new projects related to the mining sector in Central Queensland and Roy Hill are expected to begin in 2013.

Gina Rinehart has made her way from being Australia's Richest Woman to Australia's Richest Person and then to World's Richest Woman.
