【题目】阅读理解
Two of the saddest words in the English language are if only. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don't only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It's equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn't be here. But then I thought about the fact that he's 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn't give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say if only about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I'm doing the right thing. I'm buying myself peace of mind and that's the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
(1)Which of the following is an example of the extra minute rule?
A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C.Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D.Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.
(2)The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ______.
A.keep her appointment with the eye doctor
B.meet her father who was already an old man
C.join in the holiday celebration of the company
D.finish her work before the deadline approached
(3)The underlined word foregone in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A.abandoned
B.lacked
C.avoided
D.took
(4)What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Emotional Well-being
B.The Two Saddest Words
C.The Most Useful Rule
D.The Peace of Mind

【答案】
(1)D
(2)B
(3)A
(4)B
【解析】本篇阅读主要讲解的是作者对于if only的理解及看法。
(1)考查推理判断。根据第二段内容,可知D项“在它限制某人之前就把它移开”为正确选项。故选D。
(2)考查细节理解。根据第三段中的”But then I thought about the fact that he's 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn't give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.“可知,作者决定在Good Friday去她的办公室见她年迈的父亲。故选B。
(3)考查词义猜测。。根据foregone所在句子中的lost及regretted可知,此词与opportunity搭配翻译成放弃机会,故选A。
(4)考查主旨大意。根据第一段中的”Two of the saddest words in the English language are if only.“;最后一段中的” I know there will still be occasions when I have to say if only about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality.“及文章大意,可知本文主要针对if only展开话题进行讲解,故选B。

Dieting to lose weight has become very popular in recent years. People have become more health conscious and try to take better care of their bodies by eating more healthily and exercising more regularly to lose any unnecessary fat that they may have.
Not only are people being more careful about what they eat, they are also concerned with how they eat and how their meals are prepared. People are taking more time for each meal. Many avoid the so-called "plastic" fast-food hamburgers and choose to eat a salad or a sandwich of more healthful ingredients(营养成分) in a quiet restaurant with a more leisurely atmosphere. At home, they also try to take enough time to eat a relaxed dinner without phone or TV interruptions.
While dieting may be viewed as beneficial, it has also become a serious problem for Americans, particularly for young women. Dieting for them has actually become a psychological addiction. They eat so little that they can lose as much as fifty percent of their total body weight, and although they look like skeletons, they still insist that they are fat.
The current wave of exercising, dieting and the problems produced have caused many organizations to begin educating the public. Many schools, hospitals, health organizations, newspapers and magazines, for example, are offering classed, printing booklet articles and so on, to inform the public of the way to exercise and diet, of the dangers of dieting too rapidly, and of the places people can go for medical help if they find themselves on the road to "diet addiction".

【题目】One of the two major types of smog - consisting of smoke fog, sulfur dioxide (二氧化硫), sulfuric acid, ash, and soot (煤烟) -is called London smog. Indeed, the word smog is thought to have originated in England in 1905 as a short form of the words “smoke” and “fog.”

Probably the worst case of smog in history started in London on Thursday, 4 December, 1952. 1 A temperature inversion (逆温) placed a blanket of warm air over the cold air. With nightfall, a thick fog and below-freezing temperatures caused the people of London to put coal into their small stoves. Millions of these fires burned throughout the night, pouring sulfur dioxide and smoke into the air. The next day, Friday, the people continued to bum coal when the temperature remained below freezing.2

Saturday was a day of darkness. For twenty miles around London, no light came through the smog. The air was cold and still.3 On Monday, 8 December, more than one hundred people died of heart attacks while trying desperately to breathe.4

By the time a light wind cleared the air on Tuesday, 9 December, more than 4,000 deaths had been caused by the smog. This is more people than were ever killed in any single hurricane, mine disaster, shipwreck, or airplane crash.5 Air pollution events may not seem as serious and shocking as other disasters, but they can be just as deadly.

A. Where does “smog” come from?

B. Soot and ash can be removed in a scientific way.

C. And the coal fires continued to bum throughout the weekend.

D. A large cold air mass moved into the valley of the Thames River.

E. The factories added their smoke and chemical gas to the atmosphere.

F. This is more people than were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

G. The city’s hospitals were overflowing with patients with breathing-related diseases.

How Fit Are Young Teens?
How often do you exercise? A new study finds that most kids ages 12 to 15 aren't getting enough physical activity.
U.S. fitness guidelines recommend (推荐) an hour or more of physical activity every day. According to the study, only 1 in 4 U.S. kids meet the recommendation. Few kids in the survey met the guidelines for physical activity that raises the heart rate and makes you breathe harder. However, most of those kids said they did at least an hour of exercise at that level during the previous week.
The study found fat teens were less active than normal-weight girls and boys. Overweight girls were slightly less active than normal-weight girls.
“There's always room for improvement,” said health expert Tala. She also said the results provide useful information to help with fitness campaigns such as Let's Move, which was launched by First Lady Michelle Obama. To inspire kids to eat right and get in shape, the First Lady visits schools and holds exercise events. She also calls on schools to offer regular gym classes.
The research suggests kids who get physical education may get better grades.
