Last night, I have a strange but interesting dream. On the way back home. I came across child from another planet. His clothes seemed to be shining and looked beautifully. As I got close to him, he looked frightening and turned his back to me. Though I couldn’t speak his language, I used hand gestures to talk about him. A while later, he told me lots of amazing thing on his planet, which made me laughing, but suddenly, he began to cry, and then he explained he had lost his way but couldn’t find his home. Seeing that, I was offered to help him. His home had a telephone number like ours, so I asked him to call his parents using my phone. Soon before making the call he disappeared.

选择恰当的主题句

Read the following text and choose the most suitable topic sentence from A—E for each paragraph. There is an extra one which you do not need.

A. l don’t really know my daughter, for she isn’t easy to get on with.

B. We were closest when she was about four, which I think is a wonderful age for a child.

C. I’m very pleased to have Carmen.

D. My first wife and I only had one child.

E. I’ve always wanted the best for her.

Family Matters

Oliver Darrow, actor, talks about his daughter, Carmen.

72   It might have been nice to have more. I would have liked a son,but we just had Carmen.

I see her as my best friend. I think she always comes to me first if she has a problem. We have the same sense of humour and share many interests, except that she’s crazy about animals, obsessed with them-she has always had dogs, cats, and horses in her life.

73    That’s when they need their parents most. But as soon as Carmen went to school, she seemed to grow up and grow apart from her family, and any father finds it difficult with a teenage daughter. She was very moody and had an odd group of friends. There was an endless stream of strange young men coming to our house. I remember I once got annoyed with her in front of her friends and she didn’t talk to me for days.

74  We sent her to a good school, but she wasn’t happy there. She left because she  wanted to become an actress. So with my connections I got her into drama school. but she didn’t like that either. She worked for a while, doing small roles in films, but she must have found it boring because she gave it up,though she never really said why. She got married a few years ago; her husband’s a vet.  They must be happy because they work together. and she loves animals.

We have the same tastes in books and music,When she was younger I used to take her to the opera-that’s nay passion-but she can’t have liked it very much because she hasn’t come with me for years. I don’t think she goes to the cinema or watches TV much. She might watch my films. but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she talks to me about.

75  .She’s a good daughter, but I don’t think she likes my new wife very much because she doesn’t visit us very often. I’m looking forward to being a grandfather one day. I hope she’ll have a son.

I was being interviewed by a senior manager for a big company. I told him honestly that the principal reason that I was interviewing with them was my need to keep my family in Boston. My wife had recently died of a heart attack. A job in Boston would help me reduce some pain for my 16-year-old daughter and me. It was important to me to keep her present high school.

Bruce, the interviewer, was politely kind, but he didn't search any further. He acknowledged(承认) my loss and, with great respect, moved on to another subject. After the next round of interviews, Bruce took me to lunch with another manager. Then he asked me to take a walk with him. He told me that he had lost his wife. And, like me, he had also been married 20 years and had 3 children. I realized that he had experienced the same pain as I had and it was almost impossible to explain to someone who had not lost a loved one. He offered his business card and home phone number and suggested that, should I need help or just want someone to talk to, I should feel free to give him a call. Whether I got the job or not, he wanted me to know that he was there if I ever needed help.

From that one act of kindness, when he had no idea if we could ever see each other again, he helped our family deal with one of life's greatest losses. He turned the normally cold business interview process into an act of earing and supporting for another person in a time of extreme need.

1.According to the passage, the interviewer, Bruce, was very       .

    A. generous         B. kind            C. happy         D. mean

2.The underlined word "principal" in the first paragraph probably means     .

    A. main            B. unimportant     C. necessary     D. possible

3.We can infer from this passage that       .

    A. the writer didn't get the job in the company

    B. Bruce made the writer pass the interview

    C. another manager also lost his wife

    D. the business interview was cold

4.Which of the following statement is NOT true?

    A. The writer's daughter was studying in Boston at that time.

    B. Both the writer and the interviewer experienced the same pain.

    C. Bruce was a senior manager of a big firm.

    D. Bruce wanted to make Mends with him because he gave him his business card and home phone number.
