6.The eyeliner makes the dark circles less visible.The lip gloss hides the trembling.The ponytail hides missing patches of hair.The Abercrombie sweater covers bruises.I might look at bit thinner,but everyone will ask about my new diet.My hair might not shine the way it used to,but the pink ribbon will distract curious eyes.One hour of preparation and I look like myself.One hour of preparation and no one will know.One hour out of 24.Sometimes I woner if it's worth it-wasting a twenty-fourth of my day on a lie.But then I see my wispy hair and baggy eyes,and I have to do it.
Checking my makeup one last time,I push my sleeves up,though not past my elbows.I slip on a cute pair of flat shoes-heels are too dangerous with shaky legs-and grab my Hollister bag.Padding downstairs,I breathe in the scent of waffles and syrup.
"Morning,Mom,"I call.
"Morning,baby,"she chirps."Did you sleep well?"
"Better than I have been."
She sighs,and her eyes look a hundred years old for a minute."Any improvement is good,"she says half-heartedly.
"Of course."
"I made waffles."Her offering.
"Thanks,Mom.Smells delicious."My offering.
I sit at the table and she hands me a plate.The thought of all that food turns my stomach,but I force a smile and thank my mother again.She busies herself at the sink and fills the silence with chatter.When she turns around,she takes in the waffles still on my plate,only missing a few bites.I smile apologetically.
"I'm not very hungry this morning."
"You'll need your strength for this afternoon."She bites her lip.She doesn't like to bring it up over breakfast.I eat another bite.
"I packed your lunch."
"I'm 18,Mom.I can pack my own lunch.You have more important things to do."
She reaches for the paper sack."But now I know you'll have something to eat.And you need to eat,okay?You have to keep your strength up."
Sighing,I take the bag.I know this peanut butter and jelly sandwich won't be eaten,not any more than the one yesterday or the day before.Anything consumed after 11ends up in a plastic basin at 4:07.It'sjust the way it works.
"Hon,have you thought about what I said the other day?"she asks.
I shrug noncommittally.
"Sweetheart,you can't hide this forever.Eventually you're going to miss school and people will start asking questions."
"Mom,I have two months left of high school.I can make it till then.I'm class president and probably will make a graduation speech.I was voted‘Most popular,'‘Most fun to be around,'‘Best smile,'and‘Most likely to succeed.'I'm the girl who's got it all together.People don't want to know that the girl who's got it all together,doesn't have it all toether.People don't want to know that girl is dying!"
"Honey,don't say that.You're not dying."
"Yes,I am.You heard Dr.Morrison.I have maybe a year left.Mom,listen to me.I don't want to be the girl everyone looks at and whispers,‘Look at her.Poor thing!I can't handle that.I want to be normal.Just for these last two months."
"Okay,"she whispers."Okay.Just remember,it's okay if you don't have it all together.Sometimes things just fall apart and there's nothing we can do."
"Thanks,Mom."I grab my bag and lunch and kiss her on the cheek."I love you.""I love you too,"my mom replies.This exchange,once taken for granted,is now a vital part of every morning,every afternoon,every night.Three little words,followed by four more,have come to mean more than an entire conversation.They bridge all gaps and disagreements,because we both know there is now a finite number left.
Keys in hand,I open the door and blink in the early morning sun.My silver car waits in the driveway and as I walk toward it,I check my reflection in the tinted window.Perfect.

17.Some of the world's most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day.UNESCO( United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations,though,in the U.S.the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older,and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.
It's Jason Moran's job to help change that.As the Kennedy Center's artistic adviser for jazz,Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz,make the music more accessible,and preserve its history and culture.
"Jazz seems like it's not really a part of the American appetite,"Moran tells National Public Radio's reporter Neal Conan."What I'm hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore.It's actually color,and it's actually digital."
Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost."The music can't be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958.It has to continue to move,because the way the world works is not the same,"says Moran.
Last year,Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller's music for a dance party,"Just
to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,"says Moran."For me,it's the recontextualization.In music,where does the emotion(情感) lie?Are we,as humans,gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts?Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,"says Moran,"so I want to continue those dialogues.
Those are the things I want to foster."

28.Why did UNESCO set April 30as International Jazz Day?C
A.To remember the birth of jazz.
B.To encourage people to study music.
C.To recognize the value of jazz.
D.To protect cultural diversity.
29.What does the underlined word"that"in paragraph 3refer to?C
A.The jazz audience becoming larger.
B.The production of jazz growing faster.
C.Jazz being less popular with the young.
D.Jazz becoming more accessible.
30.What can we infer about Moran's opinion on jazz?A
A.It should keep up with the times.
B.It remains black and white.
C.It will disappear gradually.
D.It changes every 50 years.

1.America is losing its moral values at an alarming rate.There was a time,not too long ago,when most young Americans had a common goal,which was to get a good job,own a home and raise a family.That was considered happiness.People knew what they could afford and stayed within their means.Children were taught to respect authority.Parents were role models for their children.
They would never let their children associate with another child that they considered to be a bad influence.And instead of just allowing them to grow up,they actually raised them with strong morals and beliefs,instilling(灌输) the values of God,family,and country.
But today,America is full of exhausted dads and single moms who,instead of taking on their role as a parent,instilling moral character and values in their children,have lots of debt upon themselves.As a result,they are too busy working to pay these debts,rather than focus on the real needs of their children.Instead of giving their children the parental guidance they need,they shower them with expensive electronic gadgets(数码产品).Most of the time,especially in single parent homes,the children are completely unsupervised.
Without proper guidance and supervision(监督),a child simply wanders aimlessly through their childhood,learning their values from only God knows who.Is it any wonder then that America is losing its moral values?The children are our future leaders.How can they lead if they don't know the way?Even animals teach their young.
Therefore,the young people of today need to listen to the older generation and start making some adjustments.Your children should be your primary concern.They need far more than mere food and shelter.They need careful guidance.Moral values need to be instilled while they are young.

24.Americans used to give their childrenB.
A.much freedom    B.proper guidance  C.1ots of money  D.expensive toys
25.Why are American parents exhausted today?A
A.They bear a heavy debt burden.
B.They are under great work pressure.
C.They are tired with raising children.
D.They have fierce competition in their work.
26.What tone(语气,口吻) does the author use in talking about today's American parents?C
A.Grateful.B.Humorous.C.Disapproving.D.Guilty.
27.The last paragraph is written toD.
A.make comparisons
B.give more examples
C.analyze the problem
D.give some advice.

18.With limited space for parks and gardens, architects and city planners often find it challenging to include greenery in neighborhoods in cities. One creative solution is to grow plants on unused areas like walls and rooftops. It's a popular idea, and now rooftop gardens and green walls have been sprouting up(大量冒出)in cities around the world.
There are many benefits of having green spaces to the urban landscape.Adding gardens to rooftops or walls can create a pleasant environment--what was once a gray cement(水泥)wall can become a colorful, blooming garden. The CaxiaForum art gallery in Madrid,Spain,is a famous example--one of its walls is covered with 15,000 plants from over 250 different species. In other cities, green walls are being used more functionally,to cover up construction sites and empty buildings and to decorate the lobbies of office buildings.
Using plants to cover walls and rooftops can also keep cities cooler in the summer.Buildings and roads absorb the sun's heat and hold it,causing a building or neighborhood to stay warmer longer.Plants,on the other hand, provide an enormous amount of shade. There is evidence that growing a roof or wall garden can lower a building's energy costs.
In New York City, public schools plant rooftop gardens that can reduce heating and cooling costs. In addition to saving the school money, teachers and parents love the gardens because of their educational value--it's a fun and healthy way for their kids to investigate the world around them."For the children,it's exciting when you grow something edible(可食用的),"said Lauren Fontana, principal of a New York public school.
Rooftop gardens and green walls may require a bit more effort to grow and maintain. However, hard work always brings rewards, and with green spaces, the rewards are plentiful.
Due to the limited space in cities, rooftop gardens and green walls have emerged.(要点1)One benefit of adding green to rooftops and walls is to offer an agreeable surroundings.(要点2)Besides,shade can be created to make cities stay cooler longer, thus reducing the costs in energy.(要点3)What's more, green gardens in school bear educational value of children's exploring the world.(要点4)Though hard to maintain, green spaces in cities ensure abundant rewards.(要点5)
(71 words).
