My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where we live, when we saw an old worn-out dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the road. We stopped, bent down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar with a phone number. I called but no one answered.

The dog was painfully thin. So Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s food while I tried to encourage the dog. After Julie came back, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend made short work of the food. Eventually we got her home.

After trying for many times we got a response from the number. A lady came around with a bunch of flowers for us. She explained that Tara had been her father’s dog. She was very old and got lost that morning. So, Tara was safely returned home.

Here is the truth of the story:

Actually Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I wasn’t hearing anything that made that sound likely.

I was about to turn and go when an old black dog walked between us and almost fell down. Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.

We did help it. And here I am writing the story in my own home, in my own family.

In the song “Love Is Not a Fight” Warren Barfield talks about marriage. At one point he sings, “And if we try to leave, may God send angels (天使) to guard the door.”

Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs.

A. Too weak to walk.                                       B. Thin and worn out.

C. Unable to eat food.                                             D. Homeless but gentle.

2. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that         .

A. the dog didn’t go with the writer

B. the writer had his own pet dog

C. Julie bought some food for the dog

D. the dog didn’t eat any of the food

3.The underlined part “our problem” in the passage refers to the fact that         .

A. the writer didn’t want to take Julie’s advice

B. an old black dog appeared in front of them

C. Julie disagreed with the writer’s travel on business

D. the couple had some trouble with their marriage

4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. An Angel Dog        B. A Helpful Couple   C. Saving the Dog                D. A Famous Song

The CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs’ story about death

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered(遇到)to help me make the big choice in life.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that was incurable, and that I would live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is my doctors’ code for preparing yourself to die.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. I was completely in despair. Later that evening, I had another biopsy(活组织检查)and my wife told me that tumor turned to be curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now.

This was the closest I’ve been to facing death. To tell the truth, no one wants to die. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. It clears out the old to make room for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.

Your time is so limited that you shouldn’t waste it repeating someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma(教条)----which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart. It somehow already knows what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

The doctor advised the author to go home and get his affairs in order because_________.

   A. he had to rest at home

B. his disease was not serious at all

   C. his disease couldn’t be cured

D. he had to wait for the result of the test

How did the author feel after the diagnosis?

   A. Angry       B. Excited       C. Optimistic   D. Hopeless

What does the author think of death?

A. He thinks it is nothing to be scared of.

B. He thinks it is not the end of life.

C. He thinks it is impossible to avoid.

D. He thinks it is the beginning of a new life

In the author’s opinion, we should ____________.

   A. follow others’ advice

B. take no notice of diseases

   C. take exercise and keep healthy

D have the courage to follow our heart

We all have our ways of marking time. As a photographer, my life is measured from one story to the next. My oldest son was born in the middle of a long story about the Endangered Species Act. My daughter came along with a pack of gray wolves.

Twenty stories later, though, it’s the story in Alaska that I’ll remember best. It was the story about the loss of wilderness — and the story during which my wife Kathy got cancer. That’s the one that made time stand still. I stopped taking pictures on the day when she found that tumor (肿瘤). Cruelly, it was Thanksgiving. By Christmas, she had become very weak. Some days she was so sick she couldn’t watch TV.

Early examination saves time. But ours was not early. By the time you can feel it yourself, it’s often bigger than the doctor want it to be.

Cancer is a thief. It steals time. Our days are already short with worry. Then comes this terrible disease, unfair as storm at harvest time. But cancer also has the power to change us, for good. We learn to simplify, enjoying what we have instead of feeling sorry for what we don’t. Cancer even made me a better father. My work had made me a stranger to my three kids. But now I pay attention to what really matters. This is not a race. This is a new way of life and new way of seeing, all from the cancer.

In the end each of us has so little time. We have less of it than we can possibly imagine. And even though it turns out that Kathy’s cancer has not spread, and her prognosis (诊断) is good. We try to make it all count now, enjoying every part of every day.

I’ve picked up my camera again. I watch the sky, searching for beautiful light. When winter storms come, Kathy and I gather our children and take the time to catch snowflakes (雪花) on our tongues. After all, this is good. This is what we’re living for.

1.As a photographer, the author used to ______.

A. leave his daughter with a pack of gray wolves

B. express his love for his family in a special way

C. miss a great many important historical moments

D. devote much more to his career than his family

2.Why did the author decide to stop taking pictures?

A. To cure his own disease.                                    B. To spend more time with his wife.

C. To seek a better position.                                   D. To leave the wilderness alone.

3.What is the biggest change the cancer has brought to the author?

A. He treasured every bit of time with his family.

B. He has become a stranger to his children.

C. He takes his work more seriously.

D. He focuses more on medical care.

4.The author and his family catch snowflakes on their tongues probably because ______.

A. the snowflakes taste very good

B. snowflakes are what they feed on

C. they regard that as a way to enjoy life

D. there is beautiful light in the snowflakes

All right! Enough cookies, cola, and chips! It seems that junk food is all that the children want to eat these days.Television controls their tastes. The kids see well-known personalities eating potato chips, candy and other processed food, and they want to be like their heroes. How do they do it?They eat the same food. I wish there were more characters like old Popeye(大力水手), the sailor, who ate spinach(菠菜) and not French fries.

Now I don't expect my children to eat healthy food because I like brown rice, beans, and fresh vegetables. I'm glad to cook traditional meals of meat and potatoes for them. I really can't be too upset with the kids because most adults aren't careful about what they eat. The other night, my wife and I went to a party where there was plenty to drink but very little for us to eat. They served hot dogs and hamburgers. I can't eat hot dogs, with all those preservatives(防腐剂), and hamburgers are filled with chemicals so that they look better. Besides the meat, they had sugar-filled cookies and cake, and of course, chips. I don't want the world to change because of me, but I think people should realize that there are alternatives(选择) to eating meat. They always tell me that I probably don't get my essential(必要的) proteins. I feel better than ever and I'm sure that it's because I'm a vegetarian(素食主义者). I would really like to see more television advertisements which show the benefits of good, healthy, natural food.

1.According to the passage, it seems that ______.

A.canned food is the only one that the kids enjoy most.

B.the children like to have fried chicken only.

C.the kids prefer to have cold drinks, not junk food

D.the children like nothing better than junk food: cookies and chips

2.which of the following is NOT true?

A.Television influences children’s food choice

B.The author is not single and he eats meats

C.Though the author is a vegetarian, he feels very healthy

D.It is certain that beans and spinach are not junk food

3.The writer is a vegetarian, so people doubt very much _____.

A.why he goes to the party                B.whether he gets enough proteins

C.whether he allows his children to eat meat    D.whether he is healthy and strong

Three Boys and a Dad

Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother. Expecting a whole day to relax, he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favorite TV talk show on his first day off in months. “This will be like a walk in the park,” he’d told his wife. “I’ll look after the kids, and you can go visit your mom.”

Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike, Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.” When food had not appeared within thirty seconds, Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum. Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat(节拍). Mike chanted “Where’s my toast, where’s my toast” in the background. Brad realized his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.

Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head. Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants. Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their very eyes. Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes. Brad knew the talk show had already started.

By ten o’clock, things were out of control. Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter. Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his color pencils. Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands. Brad realized that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible.

At exactly 11:17, Brad called the daycare centre (日托所).“I suddenly have to go into work and my wife’s away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes?” The answer was obviously “yes” because Brad was smiling.

2.Which of the following did Randy do?

A. Drawing on the wall                 B. Eating apple jam

3.Why did Brad ask the daycare centre for help?

A. Because he wanted to clean up his house.

B. Because he suddenly had to go to his office

C. Because he found it hard to manage his boys home.

D. Because he had to take his wife back

4.This text is developed           .

A. by space       B. by comparison        C. by process    D. by time
