    British men are encouraged to cry

    　　There are certain things British men like to believe about themselves．The first is that one day they will again win the World Cup．They also believe they do not cry．

    　　Over the centuries, Britons are believed to have a "stiff upper lip"．But is this true?

    　　Yes, it is．A recent study arranged by Kleenex on how the British express their emotions(感情)shows that 95 percent of them still contain their emotions．

    　　Moreover, while 72 percent think this is unhealthy, 19 percent can't remember the last time they "let it out"．As a result, Kleenex is carrying out the "Let It Out" campaign(运动)that encourages the British to grab a tissue and have a good cry．

    　　These days, however, the male Briton's attitude toward crying is changing．Though the majority still struggles to open up emotionally, a 2004 study by Oxford's Social Issues Research Center found that 77 percent of British men considered crying in public increasingly acceptable．Half of London males admitted crying in front of their mothers．Scotsmen are the least emotional, although they are the most likely to cry at weddings．

    　　Peter Marsh, director of the center, said："Crying can now indicate sensitivity rather than weakness．Like with David Beckham, crying because you're dropping off your boy at nursery isn't seen as weak．"

    　　Winston Churchill was said to be a frequent crier, shedding tears at seeing a survivor in an air raid shelter, and when he saw his wife after a long absence．

    　　Psychologists(心理学家)say that while society has accepted that men can cry, there are limits．Ronald Bracey, a consulting psychologist, said："If a man began to cry when he was having stitches(缝针)in hospital, he would be considered as a wimp(软弱的人)．Men still need to be seen as strong when it comes to physical pain．"

    Everyone knows that the French are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes(陈规) or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeeds or fails?

    At least one group of people is certain that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs(实业家) in the UK found that 70 percent felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒). As a result, the survey said, entrepreneurs were “unloved, unwanted and misunderstood”. Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green-eyed monster(怪物)” and the UK is its home. Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people and gave each an imaginary amount of money. Some were given a little, others a great deal. Those given a little money were given the chance to destroy the large amounts of money given to others—but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this.

    This seems to prove the entrepreneurs were right to complain. But there is also conflicting evidence. The Organization for Econnomic Cooperation and Development(OECD) recently reported that the UK was now the world’s fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either.

    “It’s not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a Professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. “It’s people using their success in a way that seems arrogant(傲慢) or unfair or which separates them from their roots.”

    Perhaps it is the entrepreneurs who are the problem. They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires. But instead of being happy they complain that nobody loves them. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them.

         British scientists may have discovered the reason why red wine appears to protect the heart. They
    say natural chemicals found in red wine appear to protect against blocked blood vessels(血管). The
    chemical substances are called poly-phenols(多酚). They come from the outer covering of grapes. They
    are not present in other alcoholic drinks.
         Researchers say their discovery explains why many people in southern Europe can eat fatty foods and
    still have a low risk of heart disease. People in France, for example, have lower rates of heart disease
    than Americans do. Yet the traditional French diet includes butter, cheese and other foods high in
    cholesterol(胆固醇). This led the British scientists to examine another important part of the French
    diet - red wine. Several earlier studies have suggested that people who drink proper amounts of alcohol
    may reduce their risk of heart disease.
         The British team experimented with cells from the blood vessels of cows. The scientists studied the
    effects of twenty-three kinds of red wine on the cow cells. They found that poly-phenols from all of the
    red wines stopped production of a protein called endothelin(内皮素). This protein causes blood vessels
    to become smaller. Scientists believe endothelin is linked to hardening of the blood vessels, which is a
    cause of heart disease.
        The scientists found that the decrease in endothelin levels was linked to the amount of poly-phenols in
    the wines. The British team performed similar experiments with two other kinds of wine, white and rose.
    These wines contain little or no poly-phenols because the grape skins are removed before the wine is
    made. White and rose wines had no effect on endothelin levels.
         The scientists also studied the effect of non-alcoholic juice made from red grapes. They found that
    grape juice slowed the production of endothelin, but was much less effective than the red wines.

         British police have begun a year-long programme of Olympic security tests, conducting sweeping
    searches of London 2012 venues and practising defensive counter-terrorism tactics(反恐策略).
         The exercises described are part of a broad range of tests to check how the police, government
    departments and emergency services would respond to any problems with the Games.
         British police have been conducting security sweeps inside the Olympic Stadium in London as part
    of an anti-terror exercise ahead of next year's games. Officers have been searching sections of the

          The Metropolitan Police's national security coordinator for the London Olympics, Assistant

         Chris Allison said, "Clearly I'm not going to go into any details of any intelligence, but put it this way,

    measures here to make sure the terrorists couldn't be successful."
         Specialist officers from the police "rope access" team have been searching the floodlights at the
    Olympic Stadium to check for suspicious objects.
