Having a great collection of books at home doesn’t really mean that you are a person who has a passion for literature and reading. It can be a family inheritance(承) or it can be just to impress people around you about the fact that you are a person of culture. On the other hand, there are many persons who cannot afford to buy books, because some of them are quite expensive, but they usually go to libraries and spend hours reading something that interests them a lot, or just borrow books to read at home. From my point of view, literature is very important in our lives from several points of view. For e xample, reading is a means of gaining culture and enriching our knowledge in different areas of activities. It can help us have a great imagination and it makes things easier when it comes to making compositions on different themes. It gives you the possibility to speak about science, even if you don’t work in this field, or you can express your opinion about a political aspect, just because you have read something conne cted to that.

Secondly, literature offers us the possibility to enter the world of imagination, and to leave apart the real one for a couple of hours. We come to meet kings and queens many years ago, dream in the world of the rich or imagine how life will be in the future. Sometimes, we identify ourselves with the characters in the stories we read and they can give us some clues to solve our problems and how to react in certain circumstances. To conclude, I would like to say that literature is the perfect means to enrich our culture, to express correctly and have a rich vocabulary, to be able to interfere(干涉) in conversations in different fields of interest and to really be considered an erudite person.

1. The people who are fond of literature are those that _________.

A. go to libraries on weekends

B. buy expensive books in the bookstore

C. keep many books in their studies

D. have much interest in reading

2. We can learn from the third paragraph that _________.

A. we can bring kings and queens back to life

B. what we read can be useful in our daily life

C. it is very good for us to stay alone for some hours

D. we can make friends with the people in the stories

3.The underlined word“erudite”in the last paragraph probably means_________.

A. hard-working B. enthusiastic

C. learned D. creative

4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A. To advise readers to like reading.

B. To explain the true meaning of reading.

C. To tell readers how to read a book.

D. To tell readers who has the real passion for literature.

People are overweight for many reasons, the most important one of which is that they eat the wrong foods, get the wrong types ofcalories per meal, and they also eat meals at the wrong time each day. Food is more powerful than any weight loss pill, because the food that you eat can either make you thin or fat. This is true because your body is like an engine, and it only needs certain foods at certainintervals(间隔) each day.

Low-calorie Diets Do Not Work

The reason people cannot lose weight by starving themselves is that their metabolism(新陈代谢) will detect any major drop in calories and it will then adjust itself by burning fewer calories each day. That is the reason why you can eat 1,000 calories per day and not lose any weight, while your friends can eat 2,500 calories per day and not gain any weight.

Low-fat Diets Do Not Work

Many people in today’s society are buying mostly low-fat or non-fat food at the grocery store. Everybody knows how much fat is inside the food they buy. However, people are getting fatter than ever before by doing this. They are not losing weight by changing to this low-fat lifestyle.

Losing weight has nothing to do with these things. One of the most important things you can do to control your weight is to eat the proper foods, such as fruit and vegetables, eat them at the right time, and exercise every day. If people make this a habit, they will lose weight.

1.What is the main reason why people are overweight?

A. They burn many calories every day.

B. They eat the wrong foods at the wrong time.

C. They eat food with lots of calories.

D. They don’t take weight loss pills.

2.The article is written in order to________.

A. tell readers not to buy low-fat or non-fat food.

B.tell readers about an important scientific discovery.

C .tell readers how to lose weight.

D. call on people to lose weight and stay healthy.

3.To realize the aim of your weight loss plan, you should_________.

a. do exercise every day

b. eat meals at the right time

c. eat fruits and vegetables

d. eat low-fat or sweet food

e. eat the proper foods at each meal

A tender woman, or an independent one, which one would you prefer? A recent research shows that most people would choose the latter.

This type of woman is called a nühanzi (“tough woman”). Experts believe these characteristics have social and psychological roots among young females in China. Su Hao’s friends all call her a tough woman, because she can finish tough tasks usually carried out by men. For example, she carries 10-litre water to her dormitory on the 5th floor. “I depend on no one but myself,” she says.

According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, tough women have become rather common in society. Of the 21,265 respondents, 78.5 percent said they are familiar with a tough woman. About 50 percent said they like women with tough characteristics, while less than 29 percent expressed the opposite view.

Why are tough women gaining popularity? Shen Meng, a psychological consultant, believes the fierce competition in society is contributing to this trend. “Women are often in a disadvantaged position compared to men,” Shen says. “In order to survive, they have to be independent, strong and tough.” Liu

Xiao lin, professor of psychology at Wuhan Mental Health Center, believes tough women are brought up this way. They are often on close relationship with their fathers, who teach their daughters to be brave and decisive,” he says. As a result, these women are more likely to be psychologically healthy and more tolerant to stress, according to Liu.

Though Liu believes that this is a good trend, Hu Shenzhi, a psychologist at the Guangdong Sunflower Counseling Center, says the popularity of tough woman indicates an unclear line between gender identities, which can lead to relationship problems. “Some women with characteristics that differ from the traditional female image may have a difficult time finding Mr Right,” he says.“Even if they get married, their manly characteristics might cause family conflicts.

1.Which of the followings does NOT belong to the characteristics of a tough woman?

A. She is independent of others in daily life.

B. She is soft and tender to others.

C. She is more tolerant to stress.

D. She can solve problems usually for men.

2.How many respondents like tough women?

A. about 10,600. B. about 16,700.

C. 21,265. D. about 6,200

3.Why are there more tough women nowadays?

A. Because tough women are more lovely.

B. Because more women want to be independent.

C. Because girls often love fathers more.

D. Because of the fierce competition in society.

4.What problems may tough women have in their life?

A. It’s difficult for them to be friends.

B. They often suffer gender confusion.

C. They may have difficulty with marriage.

D. They have different characteristics form traditional female images.

Camp memories last forever! We make sure they are unforgettable!

Shadow Ridge Summer Camps offer so many exciting things for campers to do. Unlike other camp programs that include horses as a small part of their program, at Shadow Ridge horses are the program! We are 100% horse from stable(马厩) management, nature walks, and track rides to bedroom furnishings.

Horses help us achieve many of our aims. Girls can learn to develop responsibility, self-confidence and personal connections in their lives while having fun. Using horses as a wonderful tool for education, our camps offer an interesting place for growth and learning.

Imagine each girl having her very own horse to spend time with and a best friend to love and take care of. Each camper is responsible for a horse for the week. Our riding program provides a lot of riding and lesson time. Campers will learn how to take care of the horse and the tack(马具), as well as how to ride. Days are filled with horse-related activities to strengthen the connection between each girl and horse, as the girls learn to work safely around the horses.

At Shadow Ridge we try to create a loving, caring family atmosphere for our campers. We have “The Bunkhouse” (4 girls), “the Wranglers Roost” (4 girls), and “The Hideout” (2 girls) in our comfortable 177-year-old farm house. All meals are home cooked, offering delicious and healthy food for the hungry rider.

Our excellent activities create personalized memories of your child's vacation. Each child will receive a camp T-shirt and a photo album (usually 300~500 pictures) of their stay at camp.

Our room was on the second floor but you could still hear the roar of the ocean and see the stars at night. I used to take long walks along the water. The food in town was wonderful and the people were very friendly. The area was very quiet and peaceful, and fairly deserted.

The last evening of our vacation, however, we all heard strange footsteps following closely behind us as we were walking up to our room in the holiday centre. We turned around and noticed a fairly young man moving very rapidly across the beach and getting closer to us. He was tall and wore a baseball cap. We didn’t have any cell phones on us.
