【题目】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。
Women are friendly. They often share with others. But men are more competitive. They are trying to improve their social status. Why? Researchers have found it's all due to the hormone oxytocin (荷尔蒙催生素). Although known as the love hormone, it affects the sexes differently.
Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and our body creates a large amount of it when falling in love or giving birth.
But in a former experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during a negative situation such as envy (嫉妒).
Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive relations, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship.
Professor Ryan's recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37.
Half of the participants (参与者) received oxytocin. The other half received placebo (安慰剂).
After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the same steps with the other material.
Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social behavior. Then they were asked to analyze the relations by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship from competition. And their answers should be based on gestures, body language and facial expressions.
The results showed that, after treatment with oxytocin, men's ability to correctly recognize competitive relations improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better.
Professor Ryan thus concluded, “Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people's abilities to better tell apart different social behaviors.”
(1)What causes men and women to behave differently according to the text?
A.Placebo.
B.Oxytocin.
C.The gesture.
D.The social status.
(2)What can we learn from Professor Ryan's former experiment?
A.Oxytocin affects our behavior in a different way.
B.Our body lets out oxytocin when we are deep in love.
C.Our body produces oxytocin when we feel unhappy about others' success.
D.Oxytocin improves our abilities to understand people's behavior differences.
(3)Why did Professor Ryan conduct the recent experiment?
A.To test the effect of oxytocin on the ability to recognize social behavior.
B.To know the differences between friendship and competition.
C.To know people's different abilities to answer questions.
D.To test people's understanding of body language.
(4)The author develops the text by _______.
A.explaining people's behavior
B.describing his own experiences
C.telling apart sexual differences
D.discussing research experiments
【答案】
(1)B
(2)C

Homestay provides English language students the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home.
What to Expect
The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.
Accommodation Zones
Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2, 3 and 4 of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town center as much of central London is commercial and not residential. Zones 3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by underground.
Meal Plans Available
*Continental Breakfast
*Breakfast and Dinner
*Breakfast Packed Lunch and Dinner
It's important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal, bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by dessert, fruit and coffee.
Friends
If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host's permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion(侵犯) of their privacy.
Self Catering Accommodation in Private Homes
Accommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities (设施) and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long-stay student. However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practice English at home quite as much.
(1)The passage is probably written for __________.
A.travelers planning to visit families in London
B.foreigners hoping to build British culture
C.hosts willing to receive foreign students
D.English learners applying to live in English homes
(2)What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

In our daily life, it is necessary to make small talk in some situations. It helps to fill time between people when it is very quiet. You may not feel like talking with someone else or you are very shy at the beginning, but it is sometimes thought to be not polite to say nothing.
People use small talk almost every day. It usually takes place when you meet someone you don't know at all or someone you're not familiar with. For example, waiters and hairdressers often make small talk with their customers(顾客). If you happen to be outside when the postman comes to your door, you might make small talk with him, too.
Most often, small talk happens in places where people are waiting for something. For example, you might talk with another person who is waiting for the bus to arrive. People also make small talk in a doctor's waiting room, or when they are waiting in a line to buy something. At the office, people make small talk in lunch rooms, especially if there is a line-up. Mingling is often required(要求)among people who don't know each other very well at a party. That is to say, they are expected to walk around and talk with others.
The most common time for small talk to happen is the first time you see or meet someone on a given day. For example, if you see a neighbor in the waiting room of the airport you might say hello and discuss the sports or weather. However, the next time you see each other you might just smile and say nothing. If there is very little noise, it might be the right time to start a pleasant conversation. If someone is reading a book at the bus stop, it is probably not a good idea to start a conversation. Another good time to make small talk is during a break in a meeting when there is nothing important going on. However, it is important to recognize the signal when the other person wants the conversation to stop.
(1)When does small talk most probably happen?
A.When reading on a bus.
B.When having a meeting.
C.When meeting a postman who comes to your door.
D.When having a family meal.
(2)The underlined word “Mingling” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “________”.
A.Honesty
B.Politeness
C.Understanding
D.Conversation
(3)The third paragraph mainly talks about_________.
A.how to make small talk
B.where small talk happens
C.when to make small talk
D.why people make small talk
(4)The last paragraph is organized mainly by________.
A.telling stories
B.giving explanations
C.providing examples
D.discussing questions

【题目】Food storing is common in members of the crow(乌鸦)family. A new study tested the birds outside this naturally occurring behaviour, which may have evolved(进化)specifically because it gives crows a survival advantage. Some crow species are known to naturally use tools to recover food. So the researchers tested whether the birds could store and recover a tool so they could get it at their food after a gap of 17 hours—something we wouldn’t expect them to do naturally. But they were able to instantly select the tool out of a number of unnecessary items.
In another experiment, the researchers taught crows to select a token (礼品券)from a number of items so that they could then exchange for food. Again, the birds then showed that they could plan for the future using this new behaviour. This is different from all of the previous studies in future planning, which have focused on naturally occurring behaviour. For example, we know that chimpanzees select, transport and save appropriate tools for future needs.
These studies have shown that animals can plan for the future—but they left an important question open for debate. Are animals only able to plan to use abilities that have evolved to give them a specific advantage, or can they flexibly and intelligently apply planning behaviour across various actions? Most critics would say the former, as the animals were tested in naturally occurring behaviours.
But the new research provides the first evidence that animal species can plan for the future using behaviour that doesn’t typically occur in nature. This supports the view that at least some recognitive abilities in animals don’t evolve just in response to specific problems. Instead, it suggests that animals can apply these behaviours flexibly across problems in a similar way to humans. We need to investigate how flexible behaviour evolved. Then we might be able to see how crows’ ability to plan for the future fits in with their broader cognitive powers.
【1】What’s the new finding about some crows according to Paragraph 1?
A. They can store food. B. They can use tools to recover food.
C. They can store and recover tools. D. They can select and store food.
【2】What are crows trained by scientists to do when given a token?
A. Reject it casually. B. Exchange it for food.
C. Save it as their food. D. Build a nest with it.
【3】What do scientists think of the studies that animals can plan for the future?
A. They are controversial. B. They are disappointing.
C. They are contradictory. D. They are convincing.
【4】What can be inferred about recognitive abilities in animals?
A. They develop only with age.
B. It is unclear how they’ve evolved now.
C. No animals but crows benefit from them.
D. Planning for the future helps their evolution.
