For years experts have argued that poor households are consuming less nourishing food than the rest of the population.
But a survey of some of the lowest earners in Britain shows the nutritional value of what they eat is little different to everyone else.
In fact, the same deficiencies in diet were shared by all the population and the findings suggest that poor eating choices are far more widespread than previously suspected - affecting many wealthier families.
These included low fruit and vegetable consumption, not eating enough oily fish and eating too much saturated fat and sugar.
“This is a large and significant study and it shows we are all eating just as bad a diet as each other,” said Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University.
The poorest families were eating only slightly more sugar and slightly less fruit and vegetables, according to the study of 3,728 respondents in the bottom of the population.
Alison Tedstone, head of nutritional science at the Food Standard Agency, said: “ Overall, people on low incomes have less than ideal diets, but their diets are only slightly worse than those of the rest of the population.”
The study also showed that low earners are choosing to eat unhealthily. Their food choices were not linked to their income, their access to shops or their cooking skills.
The findings appear to contradict assumptions that the poor cannot afford healthier foods or are too far away from shops that sell them.
The Low Income Nutrition and Diet Survey showed that like the rest of the population, the poor's daily fruit and vegetable intake on average is below the recommended five portions. Fewer than 10 per cent of respondents hit this target, while around 20 per cent ate less than a portion per day.
More than three quarters (76 per cent) of men and 81 per cent of women did less than one 30-minute session of moderate or vigorous exercise per week.
Some 45 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women were smokers.
This compares with 28 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women in the general population.

Teenagers are under a lot of pressure to be thin. They resort to starving, vomiting and eating only diet foods to try and be thin. Television is a big influence on them. They watch shows like Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place and feel they need to look as thin as the actresses on these shows. Society is brainwashing young people into believing that being thin is important and necessary.

Diet commercials are constantly appearing on our television screens telling us that once we lose weight, we will be happy. While you’re standing at the grocery store you are surrounded by magazines claiming to have the newest and best diet. Each month another new diet appears claiming to be the diet to end all diets. If diets really worked, then why are there so many of them? The reason a new diet pops up each month, is that last’s month’s diets did not work. The truth of the matter is that DIETS DON’T WORK.

The diet and fashion industries are not totally to blame for society’s obsession with thinness. We are the ones keeping them in business. We buy into the idea that we can attain the “ideal” body image. We allow ourselves to believe the lies being thrown at us constantly. We are throwing away our hard earned money trying to live up to the standards that society has set for us. It’s unfortunate, but in today’s society, people have forgotten that it’s what’s inside a person that counts, not what’s on the outside. We need to start loving and accepting each other for who we are, not what we look like.

Once again, I would like to stress the fact that diets don’t work. Eating three healthy meals a day, a few snacks and doing moderate exercise, will allow your body to go to its natural set point. Next time you decide that you are going to start another diet because you feel you are too fat, stop, sign up for a self-esteem class instead. That would be money well spent.

1.What are Beverly Hills 90210 and Meltrose Place ?

A.Fashion shows.                         B.Two famous place in America.

C.Popular TV shows.                       D.Two TV channels.

2.According to the author, which of the following statements is NOT true ?

A.Our society is flooded with diet commercials.

B.The latest diet is necessarily better than all the previous ones.

C.People in North America become crazy over Dieting.

D.All diets are useless in fact

3.Why are there so many diets popping up according to the second paragraph?

A.Because teenagers are under a lot of pressure to be thin.

B.Because there are more and more fat teenagers.

C.Because the diets have no effect.

D.Because teenagers are fascinated by the newest and best diet.

4.We can infer from this passage that __________ .

A.if your diet doesn’t work, the only thing you can do is to accept your body image .

B.attending a self-esteem class will help you keep fit.

C.we shouldn’t pay attention to the size of our body.

D.what’s inside a person is much more important than his/her appearance.

5.What’s the function of the last paragraph in the whole text ?

A.persuasion        B.summarization      C.argumentation      D.description

Eating a diet high in processed(经过加工的) food increases the risk of depression(抑郁), research suggests. What's more, people who ate plenty of vegetables, fruit and fish actually had a lower risk of depression, the University College London team found.

Data on diet among 3,500 middle-aged civil servants were compared with their emotional state five years later, a British journal reported. They split the participants(参与者) into two types of diet--those who ate a diet largely based on whole food, which includes lots of fruit, vegetables and fish, and those who ate a mainly processed food diet, such as sweetened desserts, fried food, processed meat, refined(精制的) grains and high fat dairy products After accounting for factors such as gender, age, education, physical activity, smoking habits and chronic(慢性的) diseases, they found a significant difference in the future depression risk with the different diets.

Those who ate the most wholefood(全天然食物) had a 26% lower risk of future depression than those who ate the least wholefood. By contrast, people with a diet high in processed food had a 58% higher risk of depression than those who ate a diet low in processed foods.

Study author Dr. Archana Singh Manoux pointed out there was a chance that the finding could be explained by lifestyle factor they had not accounted for.(解释原因) He also pointed in a paper that a Mediterranean(地中海) diet was associated(有关) with a lower risk of depression, but the problem with that is if you live in Britain, the likelihood (可能)of you eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high.

Dr.Andrew McCulloeh, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said, this study adds to an existing body of solid research that shows the strong links between what we eat and our mental health.

He added people's diets were becoming increasingly unhealthy. The UK population is consuming (消费)less nutritious, fresh produce and more saturated(饱和) fats and sugars.

A.the increasingly unhealthy diet of the UK population

B.the link between processed food and depression

A.It is difficult for most British people to have a Mediterranean diet.

B.The Mediterranean diet is the most healthy in the world.

C.Many studies have been done on the Mediterranean diet before.

D.The Mediterranean diet is not good for depression.

3.Dr. Andrew McCulloch agrees that______.

A.our diets are closely related to our mental health

B.the present study needs more facts and other information

C.the UK population will become ill in the near future

D.more saturated fats and sugars should be taken in

4.Why might the author have written this text?

A.To tell people what a healthy diet actually is.

B.To prove people’s diets are increasingly unhealthy.

C.To encourage people to cut down on processed food.

D.To introduce some experts on the research team.
