Katie was in big trouble. She was such a sweet kid; a third-grade teacher always dreams of having a classroom filled with Katies; she was never a discipline problem. I just couldn’t imagine what she had done to make her parents so angry.

It seemed that Katie had been running up sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem. But it was of no use. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.

So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you charging lunches, Katie? What happened to your homemade?” I asked. “I lose it,” she responded. “Every day?” “Every day.” I leaned back in my chair and said, “I don’t believe you, Katie.” She didn’t care…“Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?” I took a new track. “No. I just lose it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.

The problem was still unsolved the next week when I noticed a boy who was new to the school sitting alone at a lunch table. He always looked sad. I thought I would go and sit with him for a while. As I walked towards him, I noticed the lunch bag on the table. The name on the bag said “Katie”.

Now I understood and I talked to Katie. It seemed the new boy never brought a lunch, and he wouldn’t go to the lunch line for a free lunch (A student whose family is too poor qualifies for a free lunch). He had confided in Katie and asked her not to tell anyone that his parents wanted him to get free lunch at school. Katie asked me not to tell her parents. But I did. I drove to Katie’s house that evening after I was sure that she was in bed. I have never seen parents so proud of their child. Katie didn’t care that her parents and teacher were disappointed in her. But she cared about a little boy who was hungry and scared.

Katie still buys lunch every day at school. And every day, as she heads out the door, her mom hands her a delicious homemade lunch.

1. The author thought Katie was a girl who ________________________.

2.Why did Katie eat school lunch instead of her homemade lunch each day?

A. She had lost her homemade lunch.

B. Someone stole her homemade lunch.

C. She didn’t like the taste of her homemade lunch.

D. She gave her homemade lunch to a hungry boy

3. The underlined phrase “confided in” in Paragraph 5 has the closest meaning to ______.

A. trusted B. threatened

C. helped D. blamed

4.What can we learn from the text?

A. Katie told the author the truth of her lunch during their first talk.

B. Katie’s secret of lunch was discovered by the author by accident.

C. Katie was informed that her parents had known her secret.

D. Katie stopped buying lunch at school after her secret was discovered.

“My work is done.” Those words were some of the last penned by George Eastman. He included them in his suicide note. They mark an ignoble end to a noble life, the leave taking of a truly great man. The same words could now be said for the company he left behind. Actually, the Eastman Kodak Company is through. It has been mismanaged financially, technologically and competitively. For 20 years, its leaders have foolishly spent down the patrimony of a century’s prosperity. One of America’s bedrock brands is about to disappear, the Kodak moment has passed.

But George Eastman is not how he died, and the Eastman Kodak Company is not how it is being killed. Though the ends be needless and premature, they must not be allowed to overshadow the greatness that came before. Few companies have done so much good for so many people, or defined and lifted so profoundly the spirit of a nation and perhaps the world. It is impossible to understand the 20th Century without recognizing the role of the Eastman Kodak Company.

Kodak served mankind through entertainment, science, national defense and the stockpiling of family memories. Kodak took us to the top of Mount Suribachi and to the Sea of Tranquility. It introduced us to the merry old Land of Oz and to stars from Charlie Chaplin to John Wayne, and Elizabeth Taylor to Tom Hanks. It showed us the shot that killed President Kennedy, and his brother bleeding out on a kitchen floor, and a fallen Martin Luther King Jr. on the hard balcony of a Memphis motel. When that sailor kissed the nurse, and when the spy planes saw missiles in Cuba, Kodak was the eyes of a nation. From the deck of the Missouri to the grandeur of Monument Valley, Kodak took us there. Virtually every significant image of the 20th Century is a gift to posterity(繁荣) from the Eastman Kodak Company.

In an era of easy digital photography, when we can take a picture of anything at any time, we cannot imagine what life was like before George Eastman brought photography to people. Yes, there were photographers, and for ly large sums of money they would take stilted(不自然的) pictures in studios and formal settings. But most people couldn’t afford photographs, and so all they had to remember distant loved ones, or earlier times of their lives, was memory. Children could not know what their parents had looked like as young people, grandparents far away might never learn what their grandchildren looked like. Eastman Kodak allowed memory to move from the uncertainty of recollection, to the permanence of a photograph. But it wasn’t just people whose features were savable; it was events, the sacred and precious times that families cherish. The Kodak moment, was humanity’s moment.

And it wasn’t just people whose features were savable; it was events, the precious times that families cherish. Kodak let the fleeting moments of birthdays and weddings, picnics and parties, be preserved and saved. It allowed for the creation of the most egalitarian art form. Lovers could take one another’s pictures, children were photographed walking out the door on the first day of school, the person releasing the shutter decided what was worth recording, and hundreds of millions of such decisions were made. And for centuries to come, those long dead will smile and dance and communicate to their unborn progeny(子孙). Family history will be not only names on paper, but smiles on faces.

The cash flow not just provided thousands of people with job, but also allowed the company’s founder to engage in some of the most generous charity in America’s history. Not just in Kodak’s home city of Rochester, New York, but in Tuskegee and London, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He bankrolled(资助) two historically black colleges, fixed the teeth of Europe’s poor, and quietly did good wherever he could. While doing good, Kodak did very well. Over all the years, all the Kodakers over all the years are essential parts of that monumental legacy. They prospered a great company, but they – with that company – blessed the world.

That is what we should remember about the Eastman Kodak Company. Like its founder, we should remember how it lived, not how it died. History will forget the small men who have scuttled this company. But history will never forget Kodak.

1.According to the passage, which of the following is to blame for the fall of Kodak?

A. The invention of easy digital photography

B. The poor management of the company

C. The early death of George Eastman

D. The quick rise of its business competitors

2.It can be learnt from the passage that George Eastman .

A. died a natural death of old age.

B. happened to be on the spot when President Kennedy was shot dead.

C. set up his company in the capital of the US before setting up its branches all over the world.

D. was not only interested in commercial profits, but also in the improvement of other people’s lives.

3.Before George Eastman brought photography to people,.

A. no photos has ever been taken of people or events

B. photos were very expensive and mostly taken indoors

C. painting was the only way for people to keep a record of their ancestors.

D. grandparents never knew what their grandchildren looked like.

4.The person releasing the shutter (Paragraph 5) was the one .

A. who took the photograph

B. who wanted to have a photo taken

C. whose decisions shaped the Eastman Kodak Company

D. whose smiles could long be seen by their children

科目:高中英语 来源:2015-2016学年浙江温州第二外国语高一下竞赛英语试卷(解析版) 题型:阅读理解

Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet… We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically (心理) and physically.

Diet products greatly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the amount of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤) instead. All we have to do is to recognize the word “diet” in food labels.

On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without struggle.

The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because eating them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients. Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are possibly dangerous in the future.

Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.

1.From Paragraph 1, we learn that __________.

A. diet products fail to bring out people’s potential

B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products

C. diet products are misleading people

D. people are tired of diet products

2.One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to _________.

A. try out a variety of diet foods

B. think twice before they enjoy diet foods

C. pay attention to their own eating habits

D. watch their weight rather than their diet

3.Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products ______.

A. are over-taken B. are short of basic nutrients

C. have no chemicals D. provide too much energy

4.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

A. B. C. D.

CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion(结论)
