I like to feed the birds on my balcony; I live in an apartment and can't have any pets as it is against the rules.I mainly get sparrows and a couple of pigeons(鸽子).All bring joy to my heart.

The other day, one pigeon got himself stuck in my balcony fence(护栏).I thought he was dead.It made me san and then, when I went outside, he started to struggle, and my heart was filled with joy.

As I approached the bird, he froze, perhaps in fear.I like to think that he could feel the sense of my not wanting to harm him.I gently placed my hand under him and lifted him up to set him free.He flew up to the roof of my flat and watched as I put the usual seeds out.Though still in pain, he came right back down to my balcony and ate his breakfast with the rest of the birds.

It was amazing that my little feathered friend recovered from the situation. He didn't sit on the roof looking down at the evil balcony that had tried to trap him.Down he came to eat his breakfast and live the life he was meant to live.

Another thing I have noticed is that while feeding, some birds tend to chase(追逐)the others away. The funny part is that they can't chase all of them away and that while they are so busy doing this, they are missing out on the food.

How often do we behave like that in life?Instead of just getting on with the job, we watch and attack others. Then we find that while we have been busy trying to prove how good we are, all of a sudden a quiet achiever has managed to do the job and harvest the rewards we were so trying to get.

When Laura reached school-going age the discussions about moving became more urgent (紧迫的). Her father did not want the children to go to school with the village children and for once her mother agreed with him. Not because, as he said, they ought to have a better education than they could get at Lark Rise; but because she feared they would tear their clothes and catch cold and get dirty heads going a mile and a half to and from the school in the village. So empty cottages in the market town were examined and often it seemed that the next week or the next month they would be leaving Lark Rise for ever, but again each time something would happen to prevent the removal, and gradually a new idea came up. To gain time, their father would teach the two eldest children to read and write, so that, if asked by the School Attendance Office, their mother could say they were leaving the small village shortly, and in the meantime, were being taught at home.

So their father brought home two copies of Mavor's First Reader and taught them the alphabet; but just as Laura was beginning on words of one syllable (音节), He was sent away to work on a distant job, only corning home at weekends. Laura, left at the c-a-t s-I-t-s on the m-a-t's stage, then had to carry her book round after her mother as she went about her housework, asking,“Please, Mother, what does h-o-u-s-a spell?”or“W-a-l-k, Mother, what is that?”

Often when her mother was too busy or too tired to attend to her, she would sit and fix her eyes on a page that might as well have been printed in Hebrew (希伯来语) for all she could make of it, frowning (锁眉) and studying the print as though she would make out the meaning by force of concentration (专注).

After weeks of this, there came a day when, quite suddenly, as it seemed to her, the printed characters took on a meaning. There were still many words, even in the first page of that simple book, she could not understand; but she could jump those and make sense of the whole.“I'm reading! I'm reading!” she cried aloud.“Oh, Mother! Oh, Edmund! I'm reading!”

1.Laura's father didn't want his children to go to school at Lark Rise because ________.

[ ]

A.it was too far away

B.they couldn't learn enough

C.their hair would become dirty

D.they would ruin their clothes

2.The children's father decided to teach them to read and write so that they ________.

[ ]

A.had an excuse not to have to move

B.had a reason for not attending school

C.could write to the School Attendance Office

D.would be educated before they left the village

3.The underlined part “left at the c-a-t s-I-t-s on the m-a-t's stage”means that ________.

[ ]

A.Laura was working hard and learning quickly

B.her father had no time to teach her

C.her mother was too busy to attend to her

D.Laura knew little about how to read and write

4.From the passage we can infer that ________ made Laura stare at a page in her book.

[ ]

A.her lack of concentration

B.her inability to understand

C.her need to understand Hebrew

D.her determination to understand

5.Laura finally discovered she could read when she ________.

[ ]

A.understood the main idea

B.understood all the words in her book

C.recognized the printed characters

D.jumped the first pages of her book

“Dr Papaderos, what is the meaning of life?”

The usual laughter followed, and people stirred(骚动)to go.Papaderos held up his hand and stilled the room and looked at me for a long time, asking with his eyes if I was serious and seeing from my eyes that I was.

  “I will answer your question.”

Taking his wallet out of his hip pocket, he fished into a leather billfold and brought out a very small round mirror, about the size of a quarter. And what he said went like this:

“When I was a small child, during the war, we were very poor and we lived in a remote village.”One day, on the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror.A German motorcycle had been wrecked in that place.

I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was not possible, so I kept only the largest piece. This one and by scratching it on a stone, I made it round.I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun would never shine-in deep holes and crevices(裂缝)and dark closets. It became a game for me to get light into the most inaccessible places I could find.

I kept the little mirror and as I went about my growing up, I would take it out in idle moments and continue the challenge of the game.As I became a man, I grew to understand that this was not just a child's game but a metaphor for what I might do with my life.I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of light. But light-truth, understanding, knowledge-is there, and it will shine in many dark places only if I reflect it.

I am a fragment(碎片)of a mirror whose whole design and shape l do not know.Nevertheless, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this world into the black places in the hearts of men and change some things in some people.Perhaps others may see and do likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of my life.

For years my husband, John, and I had dreamed of taking our three kids to Disney World. We'd planned our trip down to the last detail and dollar. But in Georgia, halfway there, our car broke down.

At a garage, the mechanic promised our Mercury Sable would be repaired by the next week.Meanwhile, John tried to find us a rental car. After many phone calls, John finally found a car.Luckily, our auto club would pick up the tab.We ended up arriving there three hours behind schedule. We tried every ride and met Mickey.

At the end of the long weekend we called the garage to check on our car.It turned out that the mechanic hadn't even looked at it yet! John got on the phone again. He found it would cost more than $ l, 100 to rent a car to drive home. That plus a plane ticket for him to go pick up our own car and we'd be out over $2,000!

I wailed(痛哭)and asked John, "What are we going to do?" He said, "It'll work out." John encouraged me not to lose heart and he insisted on trying to find a way out.Amazingly, John found a car transport company that had a car we could drive home, paying only for gas! But all the way home I couldn't stop thinking about the money we'd still need for John's trip back to the garage and another long driving home.

When we got home, the high school student who had fed our cats asked how our trip was.I gave him the rundown, "Things worked out okay except that our car's still stuck in Georgia." "No problem," he said."I'm heading to Florida for a spring break with my parents. We'll be glad to stop in Georgia on the way back and pick up your car."

We ended up spending only $50 more than we'd budgeted. The next week, our car was back, and I had a new understanding of dealing with trouble.Whatever happens, if you never give up, a good solution will come out at last.
