Homesick is a compound word made up of HOME and SICK. You know what each word means on its own, of course. But think about what the words mean when they are used together. Homesick means SICK FOR HOME.
Now think for a minute about SEASICK. If you change the word home in the definition(释义)to the word sea, would the definition fit SEASICK? Seasick means SICK BY THE MOVEMENT ON THE SEA. When you are homesick ,the only place you want to be is at home. When you are seasick, the last place you want to be is at sea.
Have you ever heard of a person being heartsick? Heartsick doesn’t mean that something  is wrong with a person’s heart. people are heartsick when they are hurt deep inside and when they feel as if their hearts are broken.
But, on the other hand, we have such compound words as handshake, handstand, and handbag. Perhaps you may write definitions for them.

Generally speaking, a British is widely regarded as a quiet, shy and conservative (保守) person who is        only among those with whom he is familiar. When a stranger is present, he often seems nervous,          embarrassed. You have to take a commuter train (通勤车) any morning or evening to     the truth of this. Serious-looking businessmen and women sit reading their newspapers or     off in a corner; hardly anybody talks, since to do so would be considered quite offensive (冒犯的).

One of the few things we can say about the British with certainty is that a British takes a(n)       to the discussion of their weather and that, if given a chance, he will talk about it      . Some people argue that it is because the British weather     follows forecast and thus becomes a source of interest to everyone. This may be so. Certainly a British cannot have much      in the weathermen, whose predictions, in many cases,          to be wrong! The man in the street seems to be as accurate – or as inaccurate – as the weathermen in his      .
Foreigners may be surprised at the number of references      weather that the British make to each other in the course of a single day. Very often conversational greetings are       by comments on the weather. “Nice day, isn’t it?” “Beautiful day!” may well be heard instead of “Good morning, how are you?”       the foreigner may consider this exaggerated (夸大) and comic, it is worthwhile pointing out that it could be used to his      . If he wants to start a conversation with a British but is      to know where to begin, he could do well to mention the state of the weather. It is a(n)       subject to which a response may well be     of even the most reserved of the British.

One of China’s most popular folk arts is paper cutting(剪纸). Archaeological(考古学的) finds trace the tradition back to the 6th century; it is supposed that the beginnings of paper cutting were even a few centuries earlier. Paper cuttings are used for religious(宗教的) purposes, for decoration (装饰)and as patterns(图案).
Today, paper cuttings are mainly used as decoration. They ornament walls, windows, doors, columns mirrors, lamps and lanterns in homes. They are also used for decoration on presents, and are given as presents themselves. They are of special importance at festivals. At the Spring Festival for example, entrances are decorated with paper cuttings which are supposed to bring good luck.
Paper cuttings are not produced by machine, but by hand. There are two kinds of paper cuttings; scissor (剪刀) cuttings and knife cuttings. Scissor cuttings are fashioned with scissors. Several pieces of paper--- up to eight pieces---are fastened together. The motif(图形) is then cut with sharp, pointed scissors.
Knife cuttings are fashioned by putting several layers (层) of paper on a relatively soft foundation consisting of a mixture of tallow (动物脂) and ashes. Following a pattern, the artist cuts the motif into the paper with a sharp knife which he usually holds vertically(垂直地). The advantage of knife cuttings is that considerably more paper cuttings can be made in one operation than scissor cuttings.
In the countryside, paper cuttings are usually made only by women and girls. This used to be one of the skills that every girl was to master and that were often used to judge brides(新娘). Professional paper cutting artists are, on the other hand, almost always men who have guaranteed (保证) incomes and work together in workshops.

Dutch treat is a late-nineteenth-century term, and it originally refers to a dinner where everyone is expected to pay for his own share of the food and drink. If people go “Dutch treat”, or simply “go Dutch”, it means that they will share the expenses of a social engagement.
There are many other “Dutch” expressions in English, many of which were invented in Britain in the seventeenth century, when the Dutch and the English were commercial and military rivals. The British used “Dutch” to refer to something bad, cheap and shameful. A “Dutch bargain” at that time was an uneven, one-sided deal; “Dutch reckoning” was an unitemized(未逐条记载的) account; and “Dutch widow” was slang for prostitute. Later centuries brought in “Dutch courage”, for bravery caused by drink; “Dutch concert”, for noisy music; “Dutch nightingale”, meaning a frog; and “double Dutch”, for incomprehensible language or talk.
Some of the expressions are still in use today, but some are not. In fact, in American English, some “Dutch” expressions have nothing to do with the Dutch, but something with the German. It was probably because of the similar spelling and pronunciation that people made a mistake in distinguishing between “Dutch” and “Deutsch” (the German word for German), when German immigrants came to America in the 1700s. For instance, “the Pennsylvania Dutch” refers to the German descendants, instead of the Dutch descendants, living in Pennsylvania.
小题1:Many of the “Dutch” expressions were invented with negative sense, because ___________.
A.The Dutch were underdeveloped people.
B.Britain and Holland were competitors at that time.
C.The Dutch had many bad habits.
D.The British were superior to the Dutch.
小题2: With the information you get from Paragraph 2, make a guess at the meaning of the sentence “You are in Dutch”. It probably means ____________ .
A.You are in Holland. B.You are welcome.
C.You are in trouble. D.You are lucky.
小题3:According to the passage, some native American “Dutch” expressions were related to the German instead of the Dutch, simply because ______________.
A.People hated the German as much as the Dutch.
B.People made a mistake at the beginning.
C.People made a joke about the German.
D.The German immigrants proclaimed that they were Dutch.

“Choo, Choo!” Here comes the Chunnel train. Get aboard if you want to learn more about this underground transportation system. This is an unusual form of transportation, because it is a tunnel that trains travel through and not an actual form of transportation.
The Chunnel is actually the English nickname for the Channel Tunnel. In French, it is called le tunnel sous la Manche. It is a rail tunnel beneath the English Channel at the Straits of Dover. It connects Cheriton in Kent, England with Sangatte in northern France. It is the second longest rail tunnel in the world.
Did you know that the British and the French had a race whi1e they were building the Chunnel? The race was to see who could get to the middle of the tunnel first. The British won by a little bit. It took 15,000 workers over seven years to dig the tunnel. The tunnel was finished in 1994.
The completed Chunnel cost about $ 21 billion. But it all paid off, because it became very popular, very quick. Millions of people use it. Now it is getting even more popular.
There are three complete tunnels in the Chunnel. The two outside ones are the passenger trains. The small inner one is a guidance train. The guidance train is not used for transportation. Each track is exactly parallel to each other.
There are four different train systems in the Chunnel. The Eurostar is a high speed passenger service that connects London, Paris, Brussels, and Lille. The Eurotunnel shuttle is a rail ferry service. These shuttles carry cars. These are railcars that allow drivers to drive their vehicles on and off. There are also two Eurotunnel goods service trains.

It can be hard to meet people from another culture. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal(信号). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize (强调)the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries--like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment(多元文化环境)will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.
小题1:In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to ________.
A.keep each other companyB.share the same Culture
C.get to know each otherD.develop closer relations
小题2:The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _________.
A.even talk and silence can be culturally different
B.too many words are of no use
C.people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature
D.the English prefer to make long speeches
小题3:According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?
A.By sharing different ways of life.
B.By recognizing different values.
C.By accepting different habits.
D.By speaking each other’s languages.
小题4:What would be the best title for the text?
A.Multicultural Environment.B.How to Understand Each Other.
C.Cross-Cultural Differences.D.How to Build Up a Relationship.
