A close friend of mine lives with six hundred wildlife on the Greek Island of Kyklos. Ever since he left school(where I first knew him), he has travelled all over the world collecting animals for his very own zoo. He hoped to collect at least two examples of every kind of animal on his island, like Noah before the Great Flood. But the flood that my friend was afraid of, was a flood not of water, but of people, I expect you have heard of my friend, he writes books about his travells, and about the wild and wonderful animals that he collects. The money from the books helps to pay for all the food that these animals eat.
My friend told me that when he was out looking for water last week, (there is not enough water on the island, though there is plenty all round it), he found oil. He needs money for his travells, and for his zoo, and a little oil would buy enough water for a life-time, but he knows that if he tells anybody else about it, it will be the end of his zoo and his life’s work.
So, he will not tell anybody (but you and me) about what he found, because oil and water do not mix.

Giving a speech before a large audience is a challenge that would worry anyone—but not Shen Wenjie.
“The bigger the audience, the less nervous I am, ”he said. The 17-year-old Senior 2 student from Suzhou Middle School has every reason to be confident. Last Saturday he took first prize in the second“21st Century Cup”National High School English Competition, sponsored by China Daily and Suzhou Municipal People’s Government.
Shen outshone 34 other contestants from all over China, winning a trip to the international English-speaking competition to be held in London in May 2004.
He started learning English at the age of five and his interest in it grew through playing games. “Interest plays an important role in learning English. But effort is more important if you want to learn it well,”he said. After deciding to develop a British accent, he listened to tape after tape until he could talk like the native speakers.
Films have also proved useful. He chooses an easy film, such as Harry Porter, and focuses on the dialogues—repeating them until he knows it by heart.
“I take every chance to open my mouth and speak English, ”Shen said. He even talks to himself in English, imagining that he is explaining things to foreigners. When studying English newspapers, he tries to express the opinions in his own words and then compares them with the original stories.
“I am very grateful to my current teacher, Deng Xiaojing, who has introduced English newspapers and magazines to us, ”he said. But reading newspapers is just one of many activities that have helped his public speaking skills.
“A speech is a way of communicating with people so it is important that you put your personal feelings into it,”Shen said. “No matter how beautiful your pronunciation is, just reading out your speech will destroy it. ”

The English, as a race, are very different in many ways from all other nationalities, including their closest neighbors, the French, the Belgians and the Dutch. It is claimed that living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it. Whatever the reasons are, it may be fairly stated that the Englishman has developed many attitudes and habits which distinguish him from other nationalities.
Broadly speaking, the Englishman is a quiet, shy, reserved person who is fully relaxed only among people he knows well. In the presence of strangers or foreigners he often seems restrained, even embarrassed. You have only to witness a city train any morning or evening to see the truth of this. Serious-looking businessmen and women sit reading their newspapers or having a light sleep in a corner, and no one speaks. In fact, to do so would seem most unusual. An Englishman, pretending to be giving advice to overseas visitors, once suggested, “On entering a railway carriage, shake hands with all the passengers.” Needless to say, he was not being serious. There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior which, if broken, makes the person immediately suspected.
In many parts of the world it is quite normal to show openly extremes of enthusiasm, emotion, excitement, etc, often accompanied by appropriate gesture. The Englishman is somewhat different. Of course, an Englishman feels no less deeply than anyone of a different nationality, but he tends to display his feelings far less. This is reflected in his use of language. Imagine a man commenting on the great beauty of a young girl. A more emotional man might describe her state “Oh, she is a goddess”, whereas an Englishman might just say “Oh, she’s all right.” An Englishman who has seen a highly successful and enjoyable film recommends it to a friend by commenting, “It’s not bad you know”, or on seeing some very unusual scenery he might convey (表达) his pleasure by saying, “Nice, yes, very nice.” The overseas visitor must not be disappointed by this apparent lack of interest and involvement. Instead, he must realize that “all right,” “not bad,” and “nice,” very often have the sense of “first-class,” “excellent,” “beautiful”. This unique style of language use is particularly common in England, and is known as restrained statement.

Cleary was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour.Asked if he had anything to say, Cleary answered, "Just don't tell my mother."

Paddy was still weeping, not for Frank, but for the life which had gone from Fee's face, for the dying in her eyes.Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune, always stood between Fee and himself. He was the cause of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children.Every time it looked as if there might be happiness for Fee, Frank look it away. But Paddy's love for her was as deep and impossible to wipe out as hers was for Frank.
So he said, "Well, Fee, we won't go.But we must make sure he is taken care of.How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?"
There was no excitement in the eyes, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks." Yes, Paddy, do that.Only make sure he knows not to tell Frank we found out.Perhaps it would ease Frank to think for certain that we don't know."
