In a memory-based competition between you and a chimp(猩猩); who do you think would win? If
you put yourself on top, you might want to guess again.
In a test that challenged participants to remember numbers, a young chimp performed better than
Japanese college students.
Here's how the test worked. At Kyoto University in Japan, human students and chimpanzee
participants sat in front of a computer. Five numbers, ranging from 1 to 9, were combined with one
another and then, they appeared at random places on the screen.
The numbers stayed on the screen for less than a second. In the first test, for example, participants
saw the numbers for 650 milliseconds(about two-thirds of a second).
Then, each number disappeared and they saw a white square instead. Participants had to touch the
squares in numerical order, based on the numbers that had been there a moment before. In this test, the
students touched the boxes in the correct order about 80 percent of the time. A young chimp named
Ayumu performed equally well.
During a harder test, participants were only able to see the numbers for 210 milliseconds.
This time, students only succeeded in putting the boxes in the correct order about 40 percent of the
time. But Ayumu still could select the boxes in the fight order nearly 80 percent of the time.
Some people have what's called a "photographic memory," which allows them to remember a
surprising number of details after just a quick glimpse of something. Ayumu's memory might work in a
similar way says lead researcher Tetsuro Matsuzawa.
The chimp's young age might have something to do with his impressive performance, too. In previous
tests, the Japanese researchers found that young chimps performed better than their mothers.
The scientists are interested to see whether Ayumu loses his strong memory as he grows older. They
already know that young children sometimes have sharp memories when offered something photographical, but they lose this ability over time.

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence(智力)developed by our
environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some
extent Our intelligence is given to US at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius (天才)
out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand,a child who lives in a boring environment
will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surrounding (环境). Thus the limits
of person' s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his
environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supposed in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the
blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligent. Thus if we take two
unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely
different. If, on the other hand,we take two identical twins, they will very likely to be as intelligent as
each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and
this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical (完全相同的)twins and put them in different environments.
We might send one,for example,to a university and the other to a factory where the working is boring.
We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this shows that environment as well as
birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact
with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
1. If a child is born with low intelligence,he can ________.
A. become a genius
B. not reach his intelligence in his life
C. reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundings
D. still become a genius if he should be given special education
2. In the second paragraph, the underlined sentence means "if we _______."
A. pick any two persons
B. take out two different persons
C. choose two persons who are relative
D. choose two persons with different inteili2ence
3. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows_______.
A. the part that birth plays
B. the importance of their positions
C. the importance of their intelligence
D. the role of environment on intelligence
4. The best title of the passage can be _________.
A. Surroundings
C. Dependence on Environment
B. Intelligence
D. Effect of Education

Our spiritual intelligence quotient(精神智商),or SQ, helps us understand ourselves, and live fuller,
happier lives.
Though we're all born with SQ, most of us don't even realize that we have it. Fortunately, you don't
have to sign up for classes to learn how to improve your SQ. Here are some simple steps that can lead
you to this new level of understanding.
Sit Quietly. The process of developing spiritual intelligence begins with solitude(独处)and silence. To
tune in to your spirit
, you have to turn down the volume(强度)in your busy, noisy, complicated life and
force yourself to do nothing at all. Start small by creating islands for silence in your day. In the car, instead of listening to the music, use the time to think. At work, shut the door to your office between meetings, take a few breaths and let them out very, very slowly. Enjoy the stillness in your home after the kids are finally in bed.
Step Outside. For many people, nature sets their spirit free. Go outside to watch a beautiful sunset. If
you are walking with the dog, take the time to admire flowers in bloom; follow the flight of a bird and
watch clouds float overhead.
Ask Questions of Yourself. Ask open-ended questions, such as "What am I Feeling? What are my
choices? Where am I heading?"
But don't expect an answer to arrive through some supernatural forms of e-mail. "Rarely do I get an
immediate answer to my question," says Reverend Joan Carter, a Presbyterian minister in Sausalito,
California. "But later that day I suddenly find myself thinking about a problem in a perspective(角度) I
never considered before."
Trust Your Spirit. While most of us rely on gut(本能的)feeling to realize danger, spiritual intelligence
pushes us, not away from, but towards some action that will lead to a greater good.

1. The passage is mainly about______.
A. what your SQ is and in what way it can benefit our life
B. what your SQ is and in what way it can be improved
C. the relationship between your SQ and your life
D. advantages and disadvantages of SQ

2. The underlined phrase "to tune in to your spirit" in the third paragraph probably
means to_________
A. get your spirit relaxed
B. keep up your spirit
C. keep seated quietly
D. change your spirit

3. From the passage, we can know that the most important thing to improve your SQ is______
A. a peaceful mind
B. deep thought
C. spare time and hobbies
D. good spirits

4. According to the passage, which of the following is True?
A. Not everyone has SQ.
B. You have to go to classes to learn how to improve your SQ.
C. SQ leads us to take wrong actions.
D. SQ can benefit our life.

Certainly no creature in the sea is stranger than the common sea cucumber (海参). All living
creatures, especially human beings, have their features, but everything about the little sea cucumber
seems unusual. What else can be said about an unusual animal that eats mud, feeds almost continuously
day andnight but can live without eating for long periods, and can be poisonous but is considered
eatable?
For some fifty million years in spite of all its strange features, the sea cucumber has lived on its diet of
mud. It is adaptable enough to live attached to rocks by its tube feet, under rocks in shallow Water, or
on the surface of mud flats. Common in cool water on both Atlantic and Pacific shores, it has the ability
to suck up mud or sand and digest whatever nutrients are present.
Sea cucumbers come in a variety of colors, black to reddish-brown to sand-color and nearly white.
One form even has vivid purple feelers. Usually the creature are cucumber-shaped — where their name
comes from - and because they live in rocks, this shape, combined with flexibility, enables them to press
into crevices (缝隙) where they are safe from animal eater and ocean currents.
Although they have greedy desire for food, eating day and night, sea cucumbers have the ability to
become still and live at a low metabolic (新陈代谢) rate — feeding s little or not at all for long periods,
so that the living things in the ocean that provide their food have chance to increase by a large amount.
If it were not for this natural ability, they would swallow all the food available in a short time and would
probably starve themselves out of existence.
But the most impressive thing about the sea cucumber is the way it defends itself. Its major enemies
are fish and crabs. When attacked, it forces all its organs in its body out into water. It also removes
attached structures such as feelers. The sea cucumber will get rid of its organs and grow itself again if it
is attacked or even touched; it will do the same if the surrounding water temperature is too high or if the
water becomes too polluted.
1. According to the passage, why is the shape of sea cucumbers important?
A. It makes them attractive to fish.
B. It helps them to digest their food.
C. it helps them to protect themselves from danger.
D. it makes it easier for them to move through the mud.
2. The fourth paragraph of the passage mainly discusses ______.
A. the reproduction of sea cucumbers
B. the food sources of sea cucumbers
C. the eating habits of sea cucumbers
D. the danger to sea cucumbers' existence
3. What can he inferred about the defense system of the sea cucumber?
A. They are similar to those of most sea creatures,
B. They are very sensitive to the surroundings.
C. They require group cooperation.
D. They are almost useless.
4. What would be the best tithe for the text?
A. The Variety of Sea Cucumbers
B. The Sources of Sea Cucumbers
C. The Similarity of Sea
D. The Strange Creature — Sea Cucumbers

Toucans(巨嘴鸟), a kind of tropical birds known for its colorful beak, are very smart. In Mexico, my
dad became friends with a toucan that was in a "walk in and see the birds" cage. The toucan was so smart that it knew how to get out. It just needed some human to help it. It almost flew out while we were leaving!
I also noticed that all toucans have different beaks! They also have very long unique beaks with an extremely long tongue. It struts(大摇大摆地走) around with its chest sticking out and beak pointed forward. The
toucan is a beautiful bird! The beak has a red tip (different shades on every one), but sometimes there is a
little turquoise on the bottom half. Then, right where the beak separates there is a splotch of yellow. And
the rest of the beak is green. The toucan takes very much pride of itself.
The toucan eats fruit and seeds. The ramphastidae(the toucan family) is known for its long beak, and
37 species. Toucans also feed on insects, small lizards, bird nestlings and eggs. They nest in hollow trees
where they incubate and care for their young. They are found in the woody areas.
Of the various toucan facts, here is an odd one. Citizens of Central and South America associate the
toucans with evil spirits. They think the birds can be the personification of evils. Where couvades(父代母育) is practiced, the father of a new child must not eat toucan flesh as it is believed to bewitch the
new-born child. Yet the toucan can also be a tribal totem(图腾). So the medicine men use it as a symbol
to fly to the spirit world.

From a very early age, some children exhibit better self-control than others. Now,a new study
that began with about 1,000 children in New Zealand has tracked how a child's low self-control
can predict poor health, money troubles and even a criminal record in their adult years.
Researchers have been studying this group of children for decades now. They observed the
level of self-control the youngsters displayed. Parents, teachers, even the kids themselves, scored
the youngsters on measures like "acting before thinking" and "Persistence in reaching goals."
The study led by Moffitt of Duke University and colleagues followed 1,000 children from
birth to age 32 in Dunedin,New Zealand.
"The children who had the lowest self-control when they were age three to ten, later on had
the most health problems in their 30s," Moffitt said,"and they had the worst financial situation.
They were more likely to have a criminal record and to be raising a child as a single parent on a
very low income. Moffitt explained that self-control problems were widely observed, and weren't
just a feature of a small group of misbehaving kids.
Moffitt said it's still unclear why some children have better self-control than others, though she
said other researchers have found that it's mostly a learned- behavior, with relatively little genetic
influence. But good self-control can be set to run in families because children with good
self-control are more likely to grow up to be healthy and prosperous parents. But the good news,
Moffitt said,is that self-control can be taught by parents, and through school curricula that have
been shown to be effective.
1. From the first two paragraphs we learn that______.
A. the research has been carried out for five years
B. self-control was assessed by children's intelligence
C. self-control in kids tends to determine their future
D. children's self-control is almost the same at early age
2. Children with low self-control are more likely to ______.
A. adopt negative behaviors
B. get good school performance
C. have better financial planning
D. become wealthy in later life
3. According to Moffitt,_____.
A. only good genetic factors can shape their lives in the future
B. willpower as a child really influences people's chances of adulthood
C. self-control in childhood has nothing to do with criminal activity
D. scientists know well why some children have better self-control
4. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Self-control cannot be taught in schools.
B. The study is restricted within few participants.
C. Good parenting can improve self-control and life success.
D. It's never too late to deal with self-control problems.
5. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Kids are encouraged to take risks at an early age
B. Child's self-control predicts future health,success
C. Children's development cannot be changed by teachers
D. How to teach the kids a bit of self-control in schools

As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a
family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how
much more.
Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping the families while they ate ordinary
meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and
their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents'efforts to
control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. "In general the more
question-asking the parents do, the higher the children's IQ scores," Lewis says. "And the more children
there are, the less question-asking there is."
The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in
life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner
conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest,
who needs the most attention. "Middle children are invisible." Says Lewis. "When you see someone get
up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it's the middle child." There is, however,
one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: "When the TV is on,"
Lewis says, "dinner is a non-event."
1. The writer's purpose in writing the text is to ______ .
A. show the relationship between parents and children
B. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table
C. report on the findings of a study
D. give information about family problems
2. By saying "Middle children are invisible" in paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children ______ .
A. have to help their parents to serve dinner
B. get the least attention from the family
C. are often kept away from the dinner table
D. find it hard to keep up with other children
3. Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______ .
A. they are busy serving food to their children
B. they are busy keeping order at the dinner table
C. they have to pay more attention to younger children
D. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family
4. Lewis research provides an answer to the question ______ .
A. Why TV is important in family
B. why parents should keep good order
C. why children in small families seem to be quiet
D. why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life
5. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?
A. It is important to have the right food for children.
B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.
C. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.
D. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner.
