McDonald's golden arches and Baskin and Robbins' 31 flavors-you can often find the same fast - food restaurants in different countries. High - rise apartment buildings also often look the same wherever you go. With countries becoming so similar, you might expect us all to live in similar living spaces. In fact, there are still many differences in houses from place to place.
The layout of a typical house depends on the area. In Korea, China, and parts of Latin America, for example, houses are often built around courtyards. Rooms open onto or have a view of this common outdoor space. “Euro - American” houses, on the other hand, usually have rooms opening onto an interior(内部的) hallway.
In the Sollth Pacific, where the weather is warm, families often live in groups of openair buildings. In the Turkish countryside, there is often a yard covered with grape vines (葡萄藤), which gives the family a cool place to spend time in the summer. In cold areas of the United States and Canada, many houses have “mud rooms”, where people leave their boots and heavy coats.
In Japan, people keep footwear on shelves there because they do not wear outdoor shoes in the house. Many homes around the world have special areas related to tradition or religion (宗教). The differences in design from place to place are very interesting. They reflect differences in culture, lifestyles, and tradition, as well as differences in the weather.

In the 1940s, Pinehaven Park was one of Crafton City's loveliest recreation(娱乐)areas. Over 40 acres of woods and fields were open to the public. In the 1950s, part of the park was taken over by Crafton City's garbage. Fifteen acres were to be used for landfill disposal(理置). As time went on, more and more of the park was used for garage disposal and less for recreation. Two years ago, the park was closed to the public for good. Along with household garbage, industrial chemicals had for years been dumped (倾倒)in the Pinehaven landfill. These poisonous chemicals had begun to seep(渗)back up through the soil. All of Pinehaven Park had become dangerously polluted.
Last year, the fish in the Crafton River began to die. After a series of investigations(研究), it became clear that the people of Crafton City were not to blame. 100~150 miles upstream, big paper mills were dumping industrial wastes into the river. Little by little, the level of poison in the river began to rise. Finally, it became so polluted that the fish themselves could no longer survive.
Downtown Crafton used to be a quiet area. Ten years of remarkable growth changed that in a big hurry. But with Crafton City's new prosperity(繁荣)came a new problem: air pollution.
