【题目】A new camera made by a company named Netatmo has facial recognition software(识别系统)that can tell parents at work that their children have returned from school, or that a package has been taken to their home. It can also tell them if a stranger has entered their home.

Janina Mattausch is a product marketing manager for Netatmo.

The common security(安全)cameras at present are not that smart. So, they can tell you if something is moving but they don’t necessarily know if it’s a human being or, ah, if its your kidsthey don’t’ know the difference, so they will warn you all the time.

When family members enter a home, the new camera "recognizes" (识别 ) them and sends information to the owner's smartphone. The owner can choose to see the video then or later. But if an unknown person enters a home, the camera will send the owner a warning that will cause an alarm to sound on the owner's smartphone.

That is what happened recently to a smart home camera owner named Darrmen. He lives in Paris.

"On a Friday I was at work, attending a big monthly meeting when my phone warned. At first I told myself 'Oh, it must be a mistake, maybe I have to set the system again. “But the notice on my phone was telling me that there was a movement in my flat and also a face that the software did not recognize.”

He watched the video and was very surprised by what he saw.

"I saw a person I did not know with his shoes on. I was watching it live on video. So I felt totally unbelievable, frozen. I asked a workmate to take me back home as fast as possible and I called the police on the way. "

With the help of the video, the police found the intruder (闯入者) later that day.

【题目】About 12 years ago, I began making a series of dolls called “Wee Mountain Folk.” At first, I made them from cloth but then began using a kind of polymer clay(软陶)called cernit. The cloth dolls were beautiful, but it was impossible to get the level of detail(细节)I can get with clay.

First, I use wire(金属丝)to build the shape of the doll. Then I cover the head, hands, and feet around the wire using the cernit. Then I make the doll’s clothes myself, using lots of different materials. The completed dolls are fixed onto hardwood bases made by my father, Jim Logan.

Generally, the dolls I make show older people taking part in traditional activities. I’ve always had a great respect for the older generation.

Inspiration for the dolls often comes from people I know. Once I was caught looking too closely at the wrinkles(皱纹)on the face of one of my mom’s friends. But I explained that her laugh lines made her more attractive.

Now I work as a teacher’s assistant, and while I was raising my two daughters, Keri and Sheryl, I could work on the dolls only late in the day. The girls loved to come downstairs the next morning to see who’d arrived in the night.

It’s the detail that I enjoy working on the most. I once made a fisherman doll for a lady to give her father, including a tiny creel a basket used by fishermen for carrying fish. When the man got the doll, he immediately opened the creel to see what was inside. Luckily, I’d made a small fish out of cernit and placed it in the basket.

Hopefully my story will inspire others to try their hand at doll making I find it very relaxing and interesting.

【题目】A Special Appointment

Years ago I moved to Woodland Hills to take a job in a small hospital’s emergency department. No one wanted to work on Christmas Eve, so the shift (轮班) went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It was a thankless job.

At 9 pm, the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Before I left in the morning to spend Christmas with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still tough, but he had survived the night and was sleeping.

The following year I got Christmas Eve duty again. At 9 pm sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr. Lee and said, “You probably don’t remember me, but last Christmas Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me.” He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left.

The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr. and Mrs. Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 pm, the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild. Mr. Lee, his family and I spent 13 Christmas Eves together. In the later years the staff all knew about the story and would work to give me time with him in the break room, where we spent a half-hour each Christmas Eve.

The last year I saw him, he brought me a gift. I carefully opened the package and found a crystal (水晶) bell inside. It was engraved (镌刻) with a single word: Friendship. Now, my family, friends and I ring that bell every Christmas Eve at exactly 9 pm and offer our best wishes to the man who we won’t forget.

【1】Working on Christmas Eve was considered “a thankless job” because ______.

A. most patients were seriously ill

B. patients refused to express thanks

C. doctors had nothing to do on that day

2When the author left the hospital the next morning, Mr. Lee ______.

A. was still in a state of danger

B. was really angry with her

C. got ready to leave the hospital

D. recovered from his heart attack

3According to the passage, the author formed a habit of ______.

A. celebrating Christmas Eve with her family

B. giving Christmas gifts to the hospital staff

C. spending Christmas Eve with Mr. Lee in hospital

D. ringing the bell for patients in the emergency department

4Why does the author ring the bell on Christmas Eve?

A. To honor her working experience.

B. To tell kids the traditional custom.

C. To remember an old friend of hers.

D. To show the beginning of the holiday.
