Ban the Band?

Every year, our school has a dance for all the students. It’s a little funny seeing friends in clean shoes and trousers or colorful dresses, instead of the usual school _____.

Most of us think the dance is great fun---even the teachers enjoy being there. _____, two weeks ago someone said that there would be no live band this year---only CDs.

“I don’t believe it!” Amy cried out during the lunch break.

“Someone said the school couldn’t _____ a band, and they think it’s too noisy anyway,” added Daniel.

“Well, I don’t think it’s good enough _____ a band!” declared Angela, “and I’m going to see what can be done.”

Angela was as good as her word. In the afternoon she went to see the school headmaster, who agreed to give the situation some more thought. And he suggested that one possibility for having a band was to increase the _____ of each ticket from $5 to $10. Angela had to find out whether the students would like to do that.

“I need all of you to help me,” she announced to our group before school the next day. “Mr. Berry gave me a list of all the names, and suggested we ask each one their opinions about the band and _____ cost.”

During the day we asked around _____ Angela suggested, and wrote down people’s feelings about the band and the cost. We were amazed how much support there was for the band and everyone agreed to _____ the extra $5.

“I’m surprised,” smiled Mr. Berry, when we gave him the result. “I really thought that only a few people wanted their band and that the cost would be too high. OK, Angela, your next ____ is to find a good band and line them up for the dance.”

Angela was all smiles and _____ the news to Amy and Daniel. “You are amazing,” smiled Daniel to Angela as he thought how close they came to having a less than perfect dance.

Frederick M. Hess is the director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, which is a nonprofit organization that conducts research on many public issues. He says that a long summer vacation doesn’t make sense in today’s world.

Can American students afford to take a summer vacation? In a summer vacation, millions of kids spend valuable time sending messages, watching TV, playing video games and doing shopping in the mall. They will also be putting their academic futures at risk.

Summer vacation once made sense in the past when you didn’t need an education to get a good job. But now things have changed. For today’s students, academic skills are important to students’ future success, but such skills are affected in the summertime. Many nations don’t give kids an American-style summer vacation. They offer no more than seven consecutive(连续的) weeks of vacation. Most American school districts offer up to thirteen weeks. To compete in the global marketplace, Americans must be prepared to go up against international competitors.

Summer vacation also causes challenges for today’s families. In the 1960s, more than 60% of families had a stay-at-home Mom. Now two-thirds of American children live in households where every adult works. For these families, summer vacation can be more burden than break. Someone must watch the kids.

But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement. Researchers have found that disadvantaged students lose significant ground in the summertime.

A longer school year does not have to be an invitation to hard boring work. Rather, it should allow time-pressed teachers to conduct richer and more imaginative lessons. Schools would have more time to devote to athletics, languages, music and the arts. Summer vacation can be a grand thing. But in the 21st century, it may also be outdated.

Career education is instruction intended to help young people identify, choose, and prepare for a career. Such instruction may focus on a person’s role in work, leisure, or family life. Career education differs from vocational education, which is designed to teach specific occupational skills.

Career education includes the formal and informal learning that occurs in the family, in the community, and in schools. In schools, career education consists of instructive activities included in many courses. These activities are designed to improve the attitudes, knowledge, and skills important for work roles. Career education helps students develop self- understanding and use it to plan their education and working life.

A complete career education program in school begins in kindergarten and continues at least through high school. Many colleges and universities also offer career education through their counseling(咨询) programs. In kindergartens and elementary schools, youngsters learn about different types of work. In middle schools or junior high school, children begin to explore the occupations and leisure activities that interest them most. In high school, students get more specific information about occupations and life styles. They may be in classroom, small group, or individual sessions where they learn how to make career decisions. They also should obtain the skills they need for further study or for a job after graduation. Counselors provide information on such matters as how to locate and apply for jobs and how to be successful in interviews. Teachers and counselors use a variety of methods to provide career education, including films about occupations or industries. Children may invite parents or other adults to come to school and describe their jobs. A student may accompany a worker on the job. The money comes from donations he receives from rich and famous people he met during his work as assistant to the president of Loyola Marymount University.

Travis Kemp, a 51–year–old disabled man with long black hair, was one of the lucky 20 to receive $ 100. He said he had no special plans for spending the money. “He has a lot of respect from me,” Kemp said. “I know I couldn’t do it.”
