Not only do our parents give life, but also gave us endless love and support. I’m very grateful to my parents. They give me so many love and spare no effort to support me. Once I was seriously ill, they were so worried and almost were kept me company the whole night. Now I’m in Senior 3. Luckily for myself, my parents can understand my stressful condition and often communicate with me with encouraged words. However, they give me enough personal space, that I appreciate so much. What I should do now is to study hardly. When I grow up, I will try my best make my parents live the very happy life.

A schoolgirl saved her father's life by kicking him in the chest after he suffered a serious allergic (过敏的) reaction which stopped his heart.

Izzy, nine, restarted father Colm's heart by stamping (踩) on his chest after he fell down at home and stopped breathing.

Izzy's mother, Debbie, immediately called 999 but Izzy knew doctors would never arrive in time to save her father, so decided to use CPR.

However, she quickly discovered her arms weren't strong enough, so she stamped on her father's chest .

Debbie then took over with some more conventional chest compressions (按压) until the ambulance arrived .

Izzy, who has been given a bravery award by her school, said: "I just kicked him really hard. My mum taught me CPR but I knew I wasn't strong enough to use hands. I was quite scared. The doctor said I might as well be a doctor or a nurse. My mum said that Dad was going to hospital with a big footprint on his chest.

"She's a little star," said Debbie, "I was really upset but Izzy just took over. I just can't believe what she did. I really think all children should be taught first aid. Izzy did CPR then the doctor turned up. Colm had to have more treatment on the way to the hospital and we've got to see an expert."

Truck driver Colm, 35, suffered a mystery allergic reaction on Saturday and was taken to hospital, but was sent home only for it to happen again the next day. Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to get rid of it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus (校园) of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem — how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which uses not only body heat, but the heat given off by such objects as light bulbs and refrigerators as well. The system works so well that no fuel is needed to make the campus’s six buildings comfortable.

Some parts of most modern buildings — theaters and offices as well as classrooms, are more sufficiently heated by people and lights and sometimes must be air-conditioned (使用空调的) even in winter. The technique of saving heat and redistributing (再分配) it is called “heat recovery”. A few modern buildings recover heat, but the University’s system is the first to recover heat from buildings and reuse it in others.

Along the way, Pittsburgh has learned a great deal about some of its producers. The harder a student studies, the more heat his body gives off. Male students send out more heat than female students, and the larger a student is, the more heat he produces. We may conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hard working overweight male genius.

1.What is the characteristic of the buildings on Johnstown campus of the University of

Pittsburgh?

A. They collect body heat to control the temperature inside.

B. They are more comfortable to live in than other buildings.

C. They use the light bulbs to heat the classroom.

D. They consume less fuel to keep the classrooms cool.

2.According to the passage, the technique of heat recovery is used ______.

A. to find the producers of heat

B. to provide heat for the hot water system

C. to make the campus more beautiful

D. to collect heat and reuse it

3.The underlined phrase “the hottest prospect” in this passage refers to ______.

A. the person who suffers most from heat

B. the person who needs more heat than others

C. the person who gives off most heat

D. the person who makes better use of heat

4.Which of the following may be the best title for this passage?

A. Recovery of Body Heat

B. Modern Building’s Heat System

C. Body Heat and Its Producers

D. Ways of Heating Building

Google’s data centres and the offices for its 60,000 staff will be powered entirely by renewable energy from next year,in what the company has called a “landmark moment”.The internet giant is already the world’s biggest corporate buyer of renewable electricity, last year buying 44% of its power from wind and solar farms. Now it will be 100%,and an executive said it would no longer refuse to invest in nuclear power in the future.

Oman said it had taken Google five years to reach the 100% target, set in 2012,because of the complexity involved with negotiating power purchase agreements. The company’s biggest demand for energy is its data centres and it admits their overall thirst for power is growing.

Google was now looking to sign 10-year agreements for low-carbon power that was constant, such as hydro, biomass and nuclear.“We want to do contracts on renewable power,it could be biomass if the fuel source is steady and enough,it could be nuclear. We’re looking at all forms of low-carbon generation.”

But he said new nuclear power was “controversial”,the possible safety consequences were much more “dramatic” than with renewable sources, and the price was “much more difficult to guarantee” than when funding solar panels and wind turbines.“We don’t want to refuse to sign a nuclear agreement if it meets our goals of low price, safety, and other factors. We don’t want to rule that out,but today we can’t positively say there are nuclear projects out there that meet this standard,”he said.

The company’s 100% renewable energy does not mean Google is getting all its energy directly from wind and solar power, but that on an annual basis the amount it purchases from renewable sources matches the electricity its operations consume.

1.A “landmark moment” for Google refers to .

A. its efforts in saving energy

B. its growing demand for employees

C. its progress in using renewable energy

D. its becoming the world’s biggest company

2.What made Google slow in achieving its target?

A. Negotiations of agreements. B. High consumption of energy.

C. Shortage of energy. D. Tight budgets.

3.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A. Nuclear power is an ideal choice.

B. Solar and wind power is not safe enough.

C. It’s unwise to invest solar and wind power.

D. Google is unlikely to use nuclear energy soon.

4.What is the purpose in writing this text?

A. To show Google’s profit goal in global market.

B. To talk about Google’s new move to use energy.

C. To recommend a new kind of renewable energy.

D. To urge the public to use renewable energy.

Saving money when you’re young is an important lesson. All good lessons and habits begin early, and saving is a skill that everyone needs. Many people — adults included — do not have a good sense of saving for the long run.

Besides being a great way to ensure you have enough money for your old age, saving money when you are young can help your future.

Making sure you don’t spend too much and continuing to save is a good way to accumulate wealth. I have put my earnings in a bank, and with investments(投资) and regular interest rates, have almost doubled my savings. Your money will double after twelve years at a modest rate of six percent interest. Many teens I know spend all the money they earn so it never has a chance to grow.

Teens should realize that now is a prime time to begin saving. In high school many parents pay for almost everything, so expenses can be small. If you have a job, you should have fun with some of the money. But you should also save some so that it will grow for you without your working, and begin planning for your future.

After high school, college is expensive and then “real” life begins, with expenses such as food and rent.

If you can hold onto a good part of the money you earn as a teen, going to college and buying a house will be much easier. The earlier you begin saving, the more time the money has to grow.

Saving early means you will have to work fewer years when you are older and allow you to spend time doing things you want. You also want to be financially secure so you can live the way you want without worrying. Also, you will be able to retire at a reasonable age.

1.Which of the following is an advantage of saving money when young?

A. It teachers important life lessons. B. It helps develop good habits.

C. It results in a sense of responsibility. D. It contributes to one’s future.

2.The author advises teens ________.

A. to put all their earnings in a bank for interest

B. not to spend the money until twelve years later

C. to pay for their schooling by themselves

D. not to spend all their earnings having fun

3.According to the author, what will “real” life bring about?

A. Lower interest rate. B. Higher living cost.

C. Difficulty in finding jobs. D. Less time to save money.

4.What is the best title of the passage?

A. The Earlier, The Better B. Money Is Everything

C. The Importance of Saving D. To Save for Your Old Age
