On Christmas Eve a few years ago an English couple received a very special telephone call. It was only a 20-second call but it was very important. The Haydens’ 15-year-old daughter had disappeared six months before. On Christmas Eve she rang them. “I’m phoning to wish a happy Christmas,” she said, “I love you.”
Ronals and Edwine Hayden were so happy that they started a special telephone service called “Alive and Well”. The service helps parents to get in touch with children who have run away from home.
Young people can phone “Alive and Well” and leave a message for their parents. The telephones are answered by answering machines. So no one can speak to the child of making him return home.
Parents of runaway children who are under eighteen can ask the police to bring their children home, so children do not want to tell their parents where they are. Through “Alive and Well” they can telephone their parents without worrying about this or giving out their addresses.
The Haydens and their helpers write down the tape recorded telephone messages and connect the address given. Many of the 30,000 British teenagers who have left home are probably in London. For only two pence they can go into a telephone coin box and call their parents. They can dial (拨) 5675339 and stop a parent’s worry: Is he dead or alive?
小题1:The Haydens’ daughter rang her parents         .
A.because she knew she had done something wrong
B.in order to give them her address
C.to say she was coming home soon
D.in order to comfort her worried parents

A.you will get the information you want
B.your message will be passed over to your parents
C.the police will bring you home
D.your parents will know where you are
小题3:From the passage, we can know that ________.
A.the Haydens received an “Alive and Well” call before Christmas
B.an “Alive and Well” call usually costs a lot
C.30,000 British teenagers enjoyed the “Alive and Well” service
D.an “Alive and Well” call is very important for worrying parents
小题4:Through “Alive and Well”, parents of runaway children         .
A.often fail to persuade their children to return home

Ronals and Edinwin Hayden夫妇正是受到女儿来电的启发创设了“Alive and Well”专线电话。
小题2:文章第四段介绍了“Alive and Well”专线电话的功能及操作,故而可以排除A,C,D三项。故B项正确。
小题3:“Alive and Well”专线helps parents to get in touch with children who have run away from home(第二段),可以让担心之中的父母得知孩子平安,所以对他们很“重要”。该专线就是Ronals and Edwine Hayden夫妇设立的,所以A项错误。For only two pence they can go into a telephone coin box and call their parents(最后一段). 只需两个便士就可以拨打该专线,因此排除B项。文章最后一段Many of the 30,000 British teenagers who have left home are probably in London.
The Haydens’ 15-year-old daughter had disappeared six months before. 一句可知,他们的女儿是六个月前出走的。故D项正确。

Aside from doing schoolwork and studying, American students must also participate in various extra-curricular activities. Many students get involved in their communities by doing volunteer work at various local organizations. In fact, the school I attend even requires students to perform a certain number of hours of volunteer work per semester. It is part of our study hall(自修课) grade, as well as a graduation requirement.
There are many places to do volunteer work in the community. Some of my classmates volunteer at the local animal shelter, the community table (which provides free meals for needy families), charity(慈善) stores, and many others. Finding a suitable place to volunteer usually depends on what’s available, as well as personal interests. For example, a friend of mine who enjoys swimming volunteers at the recreation center to teach young children how to swim.
With all these options out there, I ended up doing most of my volunteer work at a school library and a non-profit bookstore called Friends of the Library. This bookstore sells donated books at cheap prices, and all the profits made are donated to the local library.
I thought it was very fitting that I do my volunteer work at a library and a bookstore, because reading has always been very important to me. I love working in the bookstore now, because every sale we make helps our public library expand, and gives it the funds needed to purchase new books.
I think everyone should have the opportunity to read, and that we each should do our part to help those who don’t have the chance. There is a charity event, called One Book for A Window of Opportunity, in which Chinese students can donate a book to the children of the poor village Fangmaping. They don’t have a lot of resources, so reading can be a challenge. To find out more about this event, please visit: http://bbs.enfamily.cn/thread-739278-1-1.html.

Earlier this year I traveled to Turkana in Kenya. I was there to take pictures of the “broken food system”.
As a special visitor, I was greeted with songs and dances. The locals used to sing and dance all the time but now Turkana is silent and has been for some years. No one is singing or dancing any more because they have no food, nothing to celebrate. Many of them are surviving on a little corn a day and water, which they can get just every two days.
I met Tede Lokapelo, a local farmer who described the experience of a six-year drought(干旱). Tede used to have 200 goats, but now he has only seven left. He told me that this drought has taught him a hard lesson: It is too difficult to keep animals. He lives on animals. His traditional way of life has been completely destroyed now. Without the food aid(援助) they got, Tede is certain that they would starve because there are no other ways to feed themselves left.
Sadly, the same can be heard in almost any developing country around the world. Almost one billion people go to bed hungry each night. The food system is broken. In Turkana, not enough rain has fallen since 2005. They measure(测量) rainfall not in days or weeks but in minutes. More and more people are being forced to rely on food aid, but people like Tede don’t want food aid. They want to work and develop their country. It’s our responsibility(责任) to change the situation so that they can support themselves.
Drought is impossible to avoid but famine(饥荒) is manmade, and unless enough money is provided to develop a basic infrastructure(基础设施) for people in the area, thousands more lives are sure to be lost.
小题1: Why do people in Turkana no longer sing or dance any more?
A.Because they have no time.
B.Because they are tired of them.
C.Because they are always hungry.
D.Because they have other interesting things to do.
小题2:During the drought Tede had experienced, ______of his goats were killed.
A.200B.193C.7D.6
小题3: Which of the following is NOT true about Tede Lokapelo?
A.He was a farmer in Kenya.
B.He has never received any food aid.
C.His traditional way of life ha s been changed.
D.He found it hard to raise animals after the drought.
小题4:What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To show drought is serious in the world.
B.To tell readers the serious situation of food shortage(短缺).
C.To ask more people to give food aid to people in Kenya.
D.To make it clear what is the right way to help people suffering from drought.

I was appreciating my family photos on my computer, admiring my two beautiful babies, when I found a disturbing trend: my laptop was in almost all the pictures. There was my daughter, 8 months old, playing at my feet while I was typing away on the couch. There was me and my son, with the laptop at my side as I held him in my arms.
I’d heard about the Internet addiction before, but always assumed I was something limited to socially challenged guys who played too much World of Warcraft (a computer game). Now it seemed my Internet “habit” is slowly but surely crossing the line. Sometimes I find myself up at midnight, surfing the Web while my family are sleeping. I read news, keep up with friends and write my blog … just for something to do.
It turns out that I’m not the only mama who is addicted to the computer. These moms are contributing to a growing global addiction. There’s a movement among psychiatrists (doctors who specialize in mental diseases) to recognize the Internet addiction as an official mental disorder. And a recent Stanford University national survey found that 14 percent of Internet users find it hard to stay away from it for several days at a time; 9 percent try to hide their “unnecessary Internet use” from their loved ones; 8 percent admit they use the Web as a way to escape problems.
You’re likely not the kind of addict who doesn’t bathe and abuses drugs to help her stay “up” for more online time. You may have noticed, though, that going online has become a necessary part of your life, which, at least, means a load of clothes go unwashed.
It may also mean you’re missing much time with you baby – something you probably do care about.
小题1:From Paragraph 1, we can conclude that _______.
A.the author was busy taking care of her babies
B.the author’s job had something to do with computers
C.the author was not good at taking photos of her babies
D.the author looked after her babies while using the computer.
小题2:The author used to think that the Internet addiction is  ________.
A.using the web at midnightB.keeping up with friends online
C.spending too much time onlineD.being addicted to computer games
小题3:In medical terms, the Internet addiction is ________.
A.a personal life habitB.a way to escape problems
C.an official mental disorderD.the unnecessary use of the Internet
小题4:What does the author want to express in the last but one paragraph?
A.Many women still can control their online time.
B.The Internet addiction influences housewives’ lives a lot.
C.Going online has become a necessary part of women’s lives.
D.Many people don’t realize that they are addicted to the Internet.

If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be many candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought.  It’s nothing personal.  Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius.  In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities.  More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries.  These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学).  Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy.  Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese.  So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States.  Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.
小题1:The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________.
A.provide some key facts about Confucius
B.attract the readers’ interest in the subject
C.show great respect for the ancient thinker
D.prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations
小题2:We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students______.
A.have a great interest in studying Chinese
B.take an active part in Chinese competitions
C.try to get high scores in Chinese exams
D.fight for a chance to learn Chinese
小题3:What is the best title for the passage?
A.Forgotten Wisdom in America
B.Huge Fans of the Chinese Language
C.Chinese Culture for Westerners
D.Old Thinker with a Big Future
小题4:The passage is likely to appear in ___________.
A.a biographyB.a history paper

What does the word “home” mean to you? How do you say the word in French? In Spanish? In your language? Although people usually know what the word means, it often has no exact translation. It’s not surprising really, because the idea of home differs from country to country, and from person to person. A home is more than a roof and four walls. It’s the cooking, eating, talking, playing and family living that go on inside, which are important as well. And at home you usually feel safe and relaxed.
But it’s not just that homes look different in different countries, they also contain different things and reveal(显示) different attitudes and needs. For example, in cold northern Europe, there’s a fire in the living room or kitchen and all the chairs face it. In the south, where the sun shines a lot and it’s more important to keep the heat out, there are small windows, cool stone floors and often no carpets. We asked some people about their homes.
How often do people move house in your country?
“In my country many people don’t stay in one place for a very long time. They often move every ten years or so.”
Cheryl, Boston, USA
What are typical features of homes in your country?
“In Britain, even in town there’s always a garden and sometimes a cellar(地下室). We have separate bedrooms and living rooms. But we don’t often have balconies (阳台). The weather isn’t warm enough!”
— Pat, Exeter, England
小题1:Which one is true according to the passage?
A.People in Britain seldom have balconies because it’s so hot outside.
B.“Home” is a place where you feel safe and relaxed.

D.Houses in northern Europe always have big windows and cool stone floors.
小题2:The word “home” has no exact translation because ______.
A.people can’t find this word in the dictionary
B.no one knows what it is
C.it has different meanings in different countries
D.people can’t understand each other very well
小题3:You can ______ at home according to the passage.
A.eat, play, and teach studentsB.cook, talk, and play games
C.swim, eat, and make friends D.do nothing
小题4:Why is it important to keep the heat out of the houses in southern Europe?
A.Because they want to breathe fresh air outside.
B.Because there’s a fire in the living room.
C.Because they wear heavy clothing all day long.
D.Because the sun there shines a lot.

Don’t drive your kids to school. Let them ride a bike to school.
In England 8.3 million children travel to school every day. It is reported that only a small number of pupils cycle to school (under 2%), although one in three children would actually like to.
Experts say that to stay healthy, children need at least one hour of moderate (适度的) exercise every day. But only six out of ten boys and four out of ten girls get that. One of the reasons is that parents have developed a habit of driving their children to school when they could just walk or ride a bike to school.
Teachers often say that children who walk or ride a bike to school are more ready to listen to their classes, ask and answer questions in class than those driven by car, and the school journey is a good chance for children to learn about road safety and other life skills. Also, for many children, riding a bike is more fun than going to school by car.
Most parents know the benefits (益处). Then what’s stopping them from letting their kids ride a bike? Safety is the number one worry for them. But actually riding a bike is not as dangerous as parents think it is.
When you decide to buy a bike, you should be aware(意识到) that a bike that is too big or too small is dangerous. Don’t try to get a bike that your child will “grow into”. Get the right size in good working order. Generally, 20-inch wheels are on bikes for 5-8 year olds; 24-inch wheels are for 9-11 year olds; 26-inch wheels are suitable for those over 11, and some older children should even take bikes with 28-inch wheels, but the main thing is that the bike fits your child.
小题1:This passage is mainly written for ________.

C.parents who drive their children to school
D.parents who drive to work

小题3:Parents don’t allow their children to ride a bike to school mainly because ________.
A.their children don’t want to.
B.they are worried about their children’s safety.
C.they don’t know what size bike to choose
D.They haven’t enough money to buy a bike.
小题4:Generally, what size bike is suitable for a 10-year-old child?
A.A bike with 20-inch wheelsB.A bike with 24-inch wheels
C.A bike with 26-inch D.A bike with 28-inch wheels
