An environmental group called the Food Commission is unhappy and disappointed because of the sales of bottled water from Japan. The water, it angrily argues in public, has traveled 10,000 “food miles” before it reached Western customers. Transporting water halfway across the world is surely the extremely stupid use of fuel when there is plenty of water in the UK. It is also worrying that we were wasting our fuel by buying prawns from Indonesia (7,000 food miles ) and carrots from South Africa (5,900 food miles).
Counting the number of miles traveled done by a product is a strange way of trying to tell the true situation of the environmental damage due to industry. Most food is transported around the world on container ships that are extremely energy efficient. It should be noticed that a ton of butter transported 25 miles in a truck to a farmers’ market doesn’t necessarily use less fuel on its journey than a similar product transported hundreds of miles by sea. Besides, the idea of “food miles” ignores the amount of fuel used in the production. It is possible to cut down your food miles by buying tomatoes grown in Britain rather than those grown in Ghana. The difference is that the British ones will have been raised in heated greenhouse and the Ghanaian ones in the open sun.
What is the idea of “food miles” does provide, however, is the chance to cut out Third World countries from First World food markets. The number of miles traveled by our food should, as I see it, be regarded as a sign of the success of the global trade system, not a sign of damage to the environment.
【1】The Food Commission is angry because it thinks that ________.
A. UK wastes a lot of money importing food products
B. some imported goods causes environmental damage
C. growing certain vegetables causes environmental damage
D. people wasted energy buying food from other countries
【2】 The phrase “food miles” in the passage refers to the distance ________.
A. that a food product travels to a market
B. that a food product travels from one market to another
C. between UK and other food producing countries
D. between a Third World country and a First World food market
【3】By comparing tomatoes raised in Britain and in Ghana, the author tries to explain that ________.
A. British tomatoes are healthier than Ghanaian ones
B. Ghanaian tomatoes taste better than tomatoes ones
C. cutting down food miles may not necessarily save fuel
D. protecting the environment may cost a lot of money
【4】 From the passage we know that the author is most probably ________.
A. a supporter of free global trade
B. a member of a Food Commission
C. a supporter of First World food markets
D. a member of an energy development group
【1】D
【2】A
【3】C
【4】A
词“angrily”向下继续研读,根据第三,第四句“Transporting water halfway across the world is surely the
extremely stupid use of fuel when there is plenty of water in the UK. It is also worrying that we were wasting our
fuel by buying prawns from Indonesia (7,000 food miles ) and carrots from South Africa (5,900 food miles).”
从第一段第二句“has traveled 10,000 “food miles” before it reached Western customers.” 故选A。
从第二段第三句中“market doesn’t necessarily use less fuel”第四句“.Besides, the idea of “food miles” ignores the amount of fuel used in the production. 可知,除此之外“食物公里”的观点忽视了在生产过程中的燃料耗费量,减少食物里程在珍惜燃料方面是不必的。故选C。
【4】A 考查推理判断题。从第二段第一句“Counting the number of miles traveled done by a product is a strange way of trying to tell the true situation of the environmental damage due to industry.”和第三段第二句“The number of miles traveled by our food should, as I see it, be regarded as a sign of the success of the global trade system, not a sign of damage to the environment.照我看来,食物的公里数应该被认为是经济全球化的一个成功的标志而不是环境破坏的标志。可知,作者是贸易全球化自由化的支持者。故选A。

Kids and food: advice for parents
It is important for parents to know how to help their kids eat healthy. Here are a few easy ways.

The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services.” There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working on homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage (垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video(录像) about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer the up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture(文化) that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
【1】According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who ______.
A. is willing to help those in need without pay
B. can afford to travel to different places
C. has a strong wish to be successful
D. has made a big fortune in life
【2】Tracy started her work as a volunteer _______.
A. after she met Mother Teresa
B. after she finished high school
C. when she was touring Calcutta
D. when she was working in a hospital
【3】Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?
A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa.
B. She had already had some experience.
C. She was asked by Mother Teresa’s example.
D. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example.
【4】What is Tracy’s “new idea” (Paragraph 2) of being a volunteer?
A. Going abroad to help the sick.
B. Working in Mother Teresa’s home.
C. Doing simple things to help the poor.
D. Improving oneself through helping others.

Scientists have discovered that_【1】 (stay) in the cold could help us lose weight. Researchers at the University of California found that exposure to the cold increases levels of a protein that helps form brown fat--the type of fat that produces heat and keeps us warm. Brown fat burns energy, 【2】 helps us lose weight. White fat stores extra energy, which results 【3】 weight gain. The researchers said that because air conditioning and heating give us constant, 【4】 (comfort) temperatures, our body’s need for brown fat has decreased. They found that: “Outdoor workers in northern Finland who 【5】 (expose) to cold temperature have 【6】 significant amount of brown fat when 【7】 (compare) to same-aged indoor workers.” The research was conducted on two different control groups of mice. 【8】 group was injected with the protein that helps create brown fat. This group later gained 30% less weight after both groups were fed high-fat diets. The researchers say this could be good news in the fight against obesity. People who are obese have 【9】 (low) levels of brown fat than thinner people. Head researcher Hei Sook Sul said, “This protein could become an important target for research into the treatment and prevention of obesity and obesity-related diseases.” She added, “If you can somehow increase levels of this protein, you could 【10】 (possible) lose more weight even if eating the same amount of food.”

Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.
Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something that is not yet ripe(成熟的) or finished.
For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today --- a person who is new in a job.
About 100 years ago, greenhorn was a popular expression in the American west. Old-timers used it to describe a man who had just arrived from one of the big cities back east. The greenhorn lacked the skills he would need to live in the west.
Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early 1900s. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died.
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful emotion, jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play "Othello."
It describes the unpleasant feeling that a person has when someone has something that he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay raise and she does not.
In most places in the world, a green light is a signal to move ahead. A green light on a traffic signal means your car can continue on. In everyday speech, a green light means approval to continue with a project.
【1】If a person was a greenhorn, he might ___________.
A. be good at growing plants
B. get along well with others
C. be a soldier in the 16th century
D. have no experience in doing something
【2】When you have trouble in growing flowers, you can ask for help from ___________.
A. a green thumb B. a green light
C. a greenhorn D. a green-eyed monster
【3】If a girl refuses your invitation to a dance party but accepting another gentleman’s, you may___________.
A. need to buy a green light
B. have to get a green thumb
C. show them your greenhorn
D. be affected by the green-eyed monster
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
