Thank you!

Good morning, everyone,

I am Li Hua from Xingguang Middle School. The topic of my speech is ¡°Let¡¯s Ride Bicycles¡±.

As is known to all, with the improvement of people¡¯s living standards, cars have become a popular means of transport, bring great convenience to our life. However, they also caused some problems such as pollution and traffic jams.

How can we solve these problems then? As far as I am concerned, riding bicycles is a good solution. For on thing, bicycles don¡¯t need any petrol and they are energy-saving. For another, bicycles are environmentally friendly because they won¡¯t give off waste gas. What¡¯s more, riding bicycles is a good way for us to exercise and it is beneficial to our health.

Therefore, let¡¯s take the responsibility to build up a low carbon city by riding bicycles. Come on and join us!

Thank you!

¡°Earthquake!¡± The word flashed in my brain. A roaring sound filled my ears. I tried to hide beneath my desk. The desk did a wild tap dance, slipping and sliding towards the center of the room. I twisted(ŤÇú) my body and grabbed at the windowsill(´°ÑØ) behind me, somehow kicking free of my dancing chair. I tried to stand. My legs skated away as if on a bucking escalator(ÍäÇúµÄ×Ô¶¯·öÌÝ).

My fingers shook, grasped and held the windowsill tightly. Somewhere through the roar sounded the terrified scream of some wounded animals. I looked behind me and tried to steady my gaze on the other kids but the scene was a dizzy nightmare. Some of the class were sitting in the middle of the room, surrounded by chairs and desks. One girl was screaming. A boy was trying to move across the floor to the door in a crazy overarm crawl(¼çÉÏÅÀÐÐ).

I cried aloud, ¡°I¡¯m going to die. I¡¯m going to die. Save me, I¡¯m not ready to die, I¡¯m not ready!¡±

I moved forward on my knees and pressed my face against my clenched fingers(ÎÕ½ôÈÍ·). Suddenly I realized that the rocking had stopped. Perhaps I wasn¡¯t going to die.

You probably know you should say "please" and "thank you" at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?

Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can't hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears. So even if you are alone when listening to your MP3 players, you shouldn't turn it up too high.

Take Them Off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 off and put it away. Libraries and schools don't allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don't have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it doesn't make sense(ÎÞÒâÒ壩to listen on your MP3 player . Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.

Take One Out! Once in a while it's okay just to take out one earphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone.

It's Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.

A. the theatre won't allow it

B. the actors will get angry

C. others won't hear the play well

D. we may miss part of the play

4.The main idea of this passage is about _________.

A. music lovers B. music manners

C. music players D. MP3 earphones

Tigers are the largest wild cats in the world. They usually go out to hunt for food when it is dark. When a tiger sees an animal, it moves quickly and then jumps on the animals to kill it. Sometimes it can take the tiger several days to finish eating its food. When the tiger is full, it will cover the dead animal with leaves. Later, when the tiger is hungry again, it comes back to eat some more.

Tigers are different from others in the cat family: they like water and often jump into rivers to swim. Some tigers live in very cold places in North Korea, Russia and China. Other tigers live in warmer places¡ªin India and parts of Southeast Asia.

But now all tigers are in danger. Some people kill tigers to use their skins for clothes, and their bodies for medicine. There is also less and less land for tigers to live in.

A study of English learning problems was carried out among a total of 106 foreign students. It shows that most students considered understanding spoken English to be their biggest problem on arrival. This was followed by speaking, Writing increased as a problem as students discovered difficulties in writing papers that they were now expected to hand in. Reading remained as a significant£¨ÏÔÖøµÄ£©problem.

The information gained helped us in determining where special attention should be paid in our course. Although many students have chosen to join the course with a reasonable motivation£¨¶¯»ú£©, we considered it important to note what seemed to encourage interest. Nearly all the students have experienced some kind of grammar-based English teaching in their own country. To use the same method would be self-defeating because it might reduce motivation, especially if it has failed in the past. Therefore a different method may help because it is different.

Variety of activity was also seen as a way of maintaining£¨±£³Ö£©or increasing motivation. Several years ago we had one timetable that operated throughout, but we soon found that both the students and the teachers lost interest by about halfway through the ten weeks. This led us to a major re-think, so finally we brought it into line with the expressed language needs of the students.

1.What is the text mainly about?

A. Foreign students have more problems.

B. There are many ways to improve English.

C. Teaching should meet students¡¯ needs.

D. English learning problems should be studied again.

2.Writing became a bigger problem when foreign students .

A. became less interested in reading

B. became better at speaking

C. had to write their papers

D. had fewer problems with listening

3.We may infer from the last two paragraphs that .

A. grammar-based teaching seems to be encouraging

B. different teaching methods should be used

C. English courses are necessary for foreign students

D. teaching content should be changed halfway

4.The word ¡°it¡± underlined in the last paragraph refers to¡° ¡±.

My father was born on a farm in Tipperary, Ireland. He was the fourth child out of eight children.

My father was the oldest boy so the majority of the responsibility fell upon his shoulders to complete the farm work. He attended school until the fourth grade; his father pulled him out of school to work on the farm permanently (ÓÀ¾ÃµØ), though he hated it. Though supposed to inherit the farm, my father had other plans. At sixteen he left home for England.

He left without telling his parents anything. He eventually became very homesick and missed his mother greatly. He came back to Ireland and worked on the farm until he was eighteen. He got tired of the farm and left home for England again. He worked as a construction worker for five years, and then a part-time actor. But he couldn¡¯t get a decent (ÌåÃæµÄ) job because he was Irish. Many times he would walk into an interview and read a sign saying, ¡°The Irish need not apply.¡±

He was twenty years old with no family and limited friends in a foreign country that didn¡¯t want him. Once he was able to work again my father decided to save money to move to Australia. He lived in a house with a fellow Irishman, a Swede, an Englishman, and an Austrian for five years becoming a successful salesman. He bought a beach house for himself in Sydney. He then traveled through Europe visiting his family in Ireland.

In 1975 my father came to America as an illegal immigrant (ÒÆÃñ). My father with a friend of his drove across the country to Los Angeles with the dream of becoming Hollywood stars. My father lived in his car for the first few months in Los Angeles, and worked as a used car salesman. After two years of living in Los Angeles, he became documented. He met my mother and started a family. My parents have kept the family in Los Angeles, and just three years ago my father became a U.S. citizen.
