The shopping malls are designed for only one thing: encouraging people to buy, buy, buy. How do they do this? Well, it is something of an art, an art that has been brought to perfection in the 50 years since malls first started appearing in America.

Every aspect(方面) of mall design is carefully considered to appeal to(吸引) the customer's psychological(心理的) needs. This starts with the overall environment. Tests have shown that people feel most relaxed and comfortable at a temperature of 24-26 degrees. So, this is the air temperature of most malls. If it is any hotter, people may become too lazy to walk. Any cooler, they may rush around and leave before they've spent enough money.

The choice of colors is also very important. Dark colors like orange or purple can make people feel irritable or unhappy. With such feelings, they are not likely to do much shopping. Therefore, very dark colors are almost never used in malls. Instead, walls are usually painted in light colors, which make customers feel relaxed and give the mail a spacious feeling.

The arrangement of space in the mall is also done with great care. Research shows that most people are unwilling to walk more than two hundred meters to shop. In one of the new giant malls this could be a problem. The walkways in malls can be made curved(弯曲的) or angled to hide their true length. Or they can be broken up by fountains(喷泉), art displays or any of those other things that you thought were just there to entertain you.

1.From this passage we know that malls _____.

[ ]

A.are where people go for entertainment

B.came into being in the early 1950s in America

C.are places for art displays and social activities

D.have been perfect places for shopping since they were born

2.According to this passage, a mall with dark-coloured walls _____.

A.is likely to enjoy good business

B.looks peaceful and pleasant

C.costs more to be lighted

D.is likely to have poor business

For any person who must speak in public, to business or pleasure groups, humor is a helpful, and necessary, tool for getting your message across. Why does humor work a lot? There are several reasons.

People will enjoy what you have to say if it is presented with humor. But, more importantly, if you are in a situation where important, and perhaps controversial(有争议的), ideas must be presented to less than open minds, humor allows those ideas to be presented in a non-threatening(无威胁的)manner.Abraham Lincoln was famous for his ability to relate humorous stories to make a point.Humor used carefully throughout a presentation will also keep the listener’s interest high.In a word, individuals learning how to use humor in their speeches can strengthen arguments, support interesting presentations and, most of all, entertain their audience in a positive and comfortable way.
