【题目】阅读理解
Mike Miles hadn't had a stable job in years. He bounced around from one position to another, never sure when his last day would be. Sometimes, he lost a position with less than a day's notice. This wasn't due to a poor work ethic—from arriving early to staying late, Miles says he did everything he could to build a good relationship with employers. But because Miles had a criminal record, he was always cut loose when it came time to let staff go.
It wasn't until October 2015, nearly a decade after his release from prison, that a cousin told Miles about Lancaster Food Company, a local business that focuses on hiring people released from prison. Hoping this would clear up what felt like a thick cloud of uncertainty over his future, Miles submitted an application. He got an interview, and he then began a new job.
Miles' scenario is rare in Lancaster, where the poverty rate holds steady at 30%. This figure riled Charlie Crystle, Lancaster's co-founder and CEO. Crystle was raised in Lancaster but left in 1986 to purse a college degree and later, a career in technology. He co-founded four tech companies, one of which sold for millions of dollars back in 2000.
Crystle is skeptical that many of Lancaster's low-income residents can get started the way he did. He believes food production is a key way to meet former offenders who may lack a college degree. Lancaster produces products like bread. Nowadays the company is rapidly expanding; however, at just 16 full-time employees, including administration and owners, it doesn't lower the city's poverty rate.
Crystle says he wants to inspire other companies to rethink their current practices and start conversations around minimum wage and employment opportunities for everyone, including ex-offenders. Dan Jurman, who chairs the city's Commission to Combat Poverty, believes that Crystle's business is a great way to make this happen. "None of us can handle these issues alone, " he said.
(1)The purpose of the first paragraph is to show __________ .
A.a man's difficulty in living a stable life
B.an increasingly competitive workplace
C.a decrease in employment opportunities
D.the reason why Lancaster Food Company was founded
(2)What does the underlined word "riled" in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Annoyed.

D.Embarrassed.
(3)What words can best describe Charlie Crystle according to the text?
A.Outgoing, kind and considerate.
B.Wealthy but a little bit greedy.
C.Humorous, diligent and ambitious.
D.Successful and socially responsible.
(4)In Dan Jurman's opinion, what is the biggest achievement of Lancaster Food Company?
A.It greatly increases employment opportunities.
B.It suggests an idea for fighting poverty.
C.It provides a way to handle ex-offenders.
D.It creates a stable environment for people.

【题目】根据短文理解,选择正确答案。
Nowadays airfare isn't getting any cheaper with fuel costs rising every day. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.

Getting the best fare
Fly during the least popular times. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don't like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.
Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still have a chance to get suitable seats that others are not willing to pay extra for ahead of time.
Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, but the days surrounding holidays can also be crazy. Save big if you're willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Don't wait until the last-minute to book. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.
※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※
Avoiding extra fees
Avoid the upgrade(升级). It's not necessary. Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be charged for seeking a last-minute bump to first class, and the cost can be very high.
Fly carry-on only. Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big. It's easy to reduce the amount of stuff if you pack less clothes and only travel-sized toiletries. Planning to do a bit of laundry on your trip will also do.
Pack your own snacks. Unless you're flying internationally, it's rare your flight comes with a free meal. So put some of your own snacks — homemade muffins, fruit and granola bars all make fantastic travel foods — into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper, than other passengers.

(1)Which advice can help you get the best fare?
A.Take a flight on Monday or Saturday.
B.Pay the flight fare in advance.
C.Never travel on Christmas Day.
D.Book a ticket two months earlier.
(2)If you arrive early on your flying day, you can probably ______.
A.reduce the chances of delaying
B.avoid getting up early
C.get a discount(折扣) on the flight fare
D.have the seats you want
(3)Which is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Flying internationally, you may get a free meal.
B.You should always try to avoid upgrading.
C.Planning to do a bit of laundry can help you travel light.
D.Your bill may be larger if you check (托运) your bag.

【题目】阅读理解。
Last year I was put into a lowerlevel math class at school. The reason I was in this class had nothing to do with my intellect (智力) or maths skills. I am blind.
The only problem with being in this class was that I was surrounded by “atrisk” students. These were kids who did not do well in school and they were constantly in trouble with the school and the law.
One Tuesday morning, I went to a Christian Student Union meeting before school. There was a guest speaker there that day talking to us about praying (祈祷) for our enemies. I began to think about this. As I considered the idea, I prayed and asked God how I could pray for the kids in my class. I had forgotten that they weren't bad kids; they were just lost.
At first, the prayers were mechanical. When I would hear their voices in class, I would pray, “Dear God, please bless soandso...” But as I continued, I began to think of the kids more often, and in my quiet time at home I would ask God to bless (保佑) the rest of my classmates.
As time went on, my classmates became more than just annoying kids to me. There was something growing inside my heart for them, something that wasn't there before. They began to feel like family, and I was learning to love them in a way I never thought possible.
I now see that praying is such a powerful act. Prayer is the most powerful tool a Christian has. When I pray for those around me, it also blesses my life, and it changes my opinion of others. I realized I needed God's blessings to see the world through loving eyes. The prayers I said for others turned out to help me the most.
(1)What's the main idea of the passage?
A.Praying for your enemies.
B.The experience of the writer.
C.How to get along with the kids.
D.How to solve the problem about the “atrisk” students.
(2)What did the writer think about the kids at first?
A.They were lovely and friendly.
B.They were always asking for trouble.
C.They were as blind as the writer.
D.They were less reliable.
(3)What made the writer change his opinion about the kids?
A.The suggestion made by the teacher.
B.The experience with the bad kids.
C.The change with the time going by.
D.The idea about praying learning from a Christian Student Union meeting.
(4)What can we learn from the passage?
A.The kids in the writer's class are bad.
B.As time went on, the classmates became annoying.
C.After praying, the writer changed his opinion of his classmates immediately.
D.By praying for others, the writer learned a lot.

Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.
Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.
At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady that her friends thought they must copy everything she did, they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.
At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess(公爵夫人)found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o'clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born .
(1)This passage mainly discusses.
A.the history of tea drinking in Britain
B.how tea became a popular drink in Britain
C.how the Britons got the habit of drinking tea
D.how tea-time was born
(2)Tea became a popular drink in Britain.
A.in the sixteenth century
B.in the seventeenth century
C.in the eighteenth century
D.in the late seventeenth century
(3)We may infer from the passage that the habit of drinking tea in Britain was mostly due to the influence of .
A.a famous French lady
B.the ancient Chinese
C.the upper(上层的) social class
D.people in Holland

Elephants might be the most well-known and well-loved animal in African wildlife. But conservation (保护) of the African elephant faces special difficulties. While the elephant population is half of what it was 40 years ago, some areas of Africa have more elephants than populated areas can support. That's why AWF scientists are studying elephant behavior, protecting habitats and finding ways for humans to live peacefully with elephants in Africa.
Years ago, over hunting and the ivory trade were the biggest threats to elephants survival. Luckily, ivory bans (禁令), hunting rules and protected areas protect elephants from these dangers today.
The 21st century brings a different challenge to elephant conservation —land-use. Elephants walk across borders and outside parks and other protected areas. So they often destroy crops, causing conflicts (冲突) between local farmers and these big animals.
Successful conservation strategies (策略) must allow elephants to walk freely in their natural habitats while reducing conflicts between elephants and local people.
AWF researchers are searching for a way to give both elephants and people the space they need. The AWF is collecting information on elephant habitats and behavior. The information they gather will help to develop the widest possible space for elephants.
The AWF is helping elephants by protecting their habitats. And they also work with local farmers to improve their life in order to encourage them to protect rather than destroy elephants.
(1)The first paragraph of the text is mainly to tell readers _____.
A.African elephants are endangered now
B.there remains a lot to do to protect African elephants
C.African elephants are popular animals
D.the number of African elephants has increased over the years
(2)What is the biggest difficulty in protecting African elephants now?
A.They are still being killed.
B.Their habitats are being destroyed.
C.They don't have enough food.
D.They can't live in peace with farmers.
(3)To protect elephants, the AWF does all the following EXCEPT _____.
A.keeping elephants
B.protecting elephants' habitats
C.doing research on elephants
D.helping farmers improve their life
(4)What is the best title for the text?
A.African elephants conservation
B.Living with African elephants
C.African elephants' situation
D.African elephants being endangered
