“Ceci, wake up. It’s an earthquake!” That’s what Cecilia Wallace heard her mother shouting on the early morning of February 27th.

Cecilia is a 7th-grader. She, her parents and her brother, Sam, were in Chile’s capital city, Santiago, the day a big earthquake hit Chile. And like just about everyone else, they were shaken out of their sleep.

“It was so frightening,” Sam wrote. “The shaking was so huge that I will never go on a ride again.” Cecilia and Sam wrote about their earthquake experiences. Their reports were later posted on the website.

Cecilia, Sam and their parents were staying in an apartment on the 15th floor of a building. They were lucky. Their building stayed standing, because it was built to withstand earthquakes.

Not everyone was as lucky as the Wallace family. More than 800 people died. Many older buildings fell down during the earthquake.

The damage in Santiago wasn’t as bad as in other parts of Chile. So the supermarkets were open for business on the morning of the quake. But it wasn’t business as usual. “The supermarkets have been crazy with people rushing to buy their food for the next while,” Sam wrote.

Not everyone was able to get money to buy food that morning. So Cecilia and Sam made food bags to distribute to people who were begging outside the supermarket. “We gave some to a kid of my age. I made sure he got cookies and bread.” Sam and Cecilia’s mother wrote that the kids also collected money for the Red Cross.

It’s certainly an experience Cecilia, Sam and their parents will never forget. Thankfully, they lived to tell their stories.

4.From the text we can see Cecilia is a _____ girl.

5.How can we know more about Cecilia’s experiences in the earthquake?

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare (兔子) and the tortoise (乌龟). At the end I said, “Son, remember: Be slow and steady (镇定的), and that will win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”

Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”

I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!”

“He must have wished that,” Sonny said, “Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”

“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by perseverance (坚忍不拔), by pushing on steadily.”

Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”

I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless.

A. he liked tortoises while his son liked hares.

B. they disagreed about whether the tortoise was foolish.

C. he liked the story of the hare and the tortoise while his son didn’t.

2.Sonny believed that the tortoise ________.

A. in fact did win the race luckily

A. boys who were unknown to Sonny’s father

B. boys who Sonny has run races with before

C. boys who Sonny has never raced with before

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Every Wednesday, I go to Cantata Adult Life Services,a local retirement community in Brookfield, Illinois, US, with my classmates to do community service.

After my very first visit to Cantata,my life changed forever. That may sound a bit dramatic, but volunteering with the elderly has changed my views on life.

Our visits last about an hour, and we bring 25?30 students every time. We play board games and cards with the residents while we're there.

You can watch all the movies and TV shows you want about “life back then”, but nothing compares to talking to the people who were actually there. Just hearing their stories has touched me in a way I never thought possible.

Whether it was talking to 98?year?old “Hurricane Hilda” about her glory days as a roller skater or chatting with Lou about the times she danced with a famous actor, I was completely attracted by every single memory the residents wanted to share with me.

Even the residents who don't have amazing memories make the experience satisfying.I remember visiting Mrs. Robinson. She couldn't recall much about her past, but she told me she'd never forget how kind I was just to listen to her “rambling(漫谈)”. It made me realize that it's the little things that make life worth living. That's something I won't forget anytime soon.

If there's one thing I've realized in my three years of visiting Cantata, it's that presence—just being there—means more than anything to many of the residents. And despite how busy our lives are, there's always time to make someone's day.

For me, it feels great to be a source of happiness, a smile on a bad day or a listening ear for old memories. And at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

It's easy to feel like you don't have anything in common with the elderly—especially when you're a teenager. But that's not true at all.

I hate to be overly clichéd(陈词滥调的) here, but age really is just a number. As young adults, it's important for us to realize this sooner rather than later. We can learn a lot from the elderly, and they can often benefit from teenagers too.

1.What do the volunteers do according to the passage?

A.They share everything with the residents.

B.They play board games and cards with the residents.

C.They watch the residents play games.

D.They buy gifts for the residents.

2.According to the writer, what is the most important thing that volunteers can do for the elderly?

A.Playing with them.

B.Benefiting from them.

C.Helping them.

D.Being there with them.

3.What does the writer want to tell us by writing this passage?

A.We don't have anything in common with the elderly.

B.Age is just a number.

C.It is important to help the elderly.

D.Young adults and the elderly can benefit from each other.

Being an astronaut sounds cool, doesn't it?In space, they get to do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity.

However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can't do because of their weightless environment, and that's very sad. What's worse, they can't even let their sadness show—because it's impossible to cry in zero gravity.

Of course, astronauts can still produce tears. But crying is much more difficult in space, reported The Atlantic in January. Without gravity, tears don't flow downward out of the eyes like they do here on Earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have nowhere to go—they just stick to your eyes.

In May 2011, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks.“Tears,” he said, “don't fall off your eye... They just kind of stay there.”

Besides making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain. Back on Earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But that's not the case in space. The space environment dries out astronauts' eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort. “My right eye is painful like crazy.” Feustel told his teammate during the walk.

Since gravity doesn't work in space, astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears.Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet to wipe the tears away. Another choice is to just wait—“When the tears get big enough they simply break free of the eye and float around,”astronaut Ron Parise told The Atlantic.

There are lots of small things—things like crying—that we are so used to on Earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a totally different environment, like space. There, astronauts can't talk to each other directly. They also can't eat or drink in normal ways. They can't even burp(打隔), because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomach. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up(呕吐) everything in their stomach, according to the UK National Space Center.

Thus, perhaps it's only space explorers who can honestly say:“Gravity, you're the best.”

1.What can we conclude from Paragraphs 2 and 3?

A.Astronauts are unable to feel sad in space.

B.Astronauts produce fewer tears in space.

C.Tears produced in space flow down more slowly.

D.Tears produced in space don't flow downward.

2.What effect do tears have on astronauts?

A.They cause physical pain.

B.They bring comfort to them.

C.They make their vision clearer.

D.They float around and cause trouble.

3.What can the astronaut do to get rid of the tears?

A.Rub his eyes against his helmet to let the tears float forward.

B.Rub his eyes by hand to let the tears float around.

C.Get the tears big enough to fall off of his eyes.

D.Get the tears big enough to break away from his eyes.

4.What's the last but one paragraph mainly about?

A.Suggestions on how astronauts can stay comfortable in space.

B.Other basic things that are difficult to do in space.

C.Why burping is impossible in space.

D.Things that humans can't do without gravity.

Develop Better Relationships with Neighbors

Good neighbors are a lot like electricity or running water:we don’t know how much we depend on them until we don’t have them. They make our lives more pleasant and give us a sense of who we wrte, both as an individual and as a member of the community. Here is how to develop your relationships with these very important people in your life.

1._Often neighbors don’t even know each other’s names. But it’s okay to be the one to break the ice , even if you’ve lived next door for years. Most neighbors enjoy making small talk with the folks on the other side of the fence. So as you see them at work in their yards, smile, wave, and say hello. Ask how their kids are (whether they’re babies or in college), whether they could use an extra cucumber from your garden, or what they think of the price at the local supermarket.

2._These days, the old Welcome Wagon is a thing of the past. But your new neighbors maybe feeling lonely and unsure, especially if they’re far from home, and might appreciate a friendly face bearing fresh-baked chocolate cakes. If they have kids, tell them where the children in theneighborhood live. Recommend the best places to eat and sleep. Invite them over for coffee or tea when they get settled, give them your number, and point to your house as you say good-bye.

3._ Return anything that you borrow from a neighbor, such as tools, in good repair and as soon as you’ve finished with them. Replace anything that belongs to your neighbor that you, your children, or your pets break or soil. Make sure that your car is not blocking their doorway. Such random acts of consideration will have your neighbors talking — and the talk will be good.

4._If you value a friendship with your neighbors, spend time with them. What better way to meet your neighbors than to invite them to an informal barbecue, pool party, or holiday open house? Better yet, you might even consider throwing a get-together in their honor. Deliver the invitations in person to everyone who lives on your street and chat with each for five minutes before moving on to the next house. This way, you will get an idea of what your neighbors are like so that you can plan for appropriate food and music.

5. In a good relationship, it’s really the little things that count. Help to bring in the mail for the elderly neighbor when there is a heavy rain. When your neighbor forgets to take in his rubbish cans, roll them back into his yard. If you’re truly concerned, you’ll know when your neighbor needs some cheering up — a bunch of flowers or a helping hand when it’s needed. All it takes to develop your relationship with neighbors is the respect for their feelings.
