Last Friday _____________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

【答案】Last Friday, as usual I rode my bike home. But at a crossing, I accidentally knocked an old man off his bike. I hurried over and found his leg was injured. Nervous and worried, I called my mom and told her what had happened. We decided to take him to the hospital first.

Soon after we arrived at the hospital, my mother came. The doctor gave the old man a thorough examination. To our delight and relief, there was nothing seriously wrong with him. We thanked the doctor and left.

After that, we went back to where the bike was parked only to find it didn’t work. So I immediately found a repairman to get it fixed. Before the old man left, my mom offered him our cell phone number in case he needed to contact us. Then the old man got on his bike and we waved goodbye to each other.

The accident made me realize that in the first place we should be careful to avoid accidents, but once they occur, we should take responsibility.

Good news for giant panda lovers: The cute and cuddly creature has just been brought back from the brink of extinction.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) downgraded the species from “endangered” to “vulnerable” as the union released its updated Red List on Sept 4 at Hawaii.

The downgrade came after IUCN data suggested that there were 1,864 giant pandas in the wild in China in 2014 their population has grown by 17 percent in the decade leading up to 2014.

Chinese conservation efforts, including forest protection and reforestation, are considered to be the driving force behind the animal’s resurgence.

“It’s all about restoring the habitats,” Craig Hilton-Taylor, head of the IUCN Red List, told the BBC.

The number of panda reserves in China has also jumped to 67, from 13 in 1992. Nearly two-thirds of all wild pandas live in these reserves, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

“Just by restoring the panda’s habitat, that’s given them back their space and made food available to them,” Hilton-Taylor said.

A loss of habitats, on the contrary, was what caused the number of pandas to drop to just over 1,200 in the 1980s, Hilton-Taylor added.

Apart from giant pandas, the Tibetan Antelope has also moved from “endangered” to “near threatened”. According to a statement from IUCN, the animal’s numbers dwindled severely dropping from around 1 million to an estimated 65,000-72,500 in the 1980s and early 1990s due to commercial poaching. Rigorous(严格的) protection has since been enforced to protect the beasts and the population is now likely to be between 100,000 and 150,000.

Despite the improved statuses, wild animals like the giant panda and the Tibetan Antelope still face great challenges. The IUCN warned, for example, that ongoing threats from climate change could eliminate more than 35 percent of the panda’s bamboo habitat in the next 80 years, which would reverse the species recent gains.

【题目】As early as the mid-18th century, some people began raising doubts about Marco Polo’s travels. In 1995, historian Frances Wood argued in her book Did Marco Polo Go to China? that the famous explorer from Venice never made it to pass the Black Sea. She noted that his travel journal left out the Great Wall of China, chopsticks and tea drinking among other details. Furthermore, Chinese documents from Polo’s day made no mention of the explorer and his men.

Wood and other scholars have argued that Marco Polo based his tales of China on information collected from fellow trades who had actually been there. Last year, a team of Italian researchers became the latest to challenge Polo’s accounts(叙述). They said that evidence didn’t support his description of Kublai Khan’s Japanese invasions (侵略).

Now, however, research by Hans Ulrich Vogel of Germany’s Tubingen University might help prove Marco Polo was true. In a new book Marco Polo Was in Chinathe professor of Chinese history tries to prove that Marco Polo spoke the truth. He suggests, for example, that Polo didn’t include the Great Wall in his book because it only achieved its great importance in the Ming Dynasty several hundred years later. Vogel further explains that Chinese records from the 13th and 14th centuries avoided setting down visits from Westerners.

Historians before him have touched on these issues. But Vogel also relies on another evidence:the explorer’s very detailed descriptions of currency and salt production in the Yuan Dynasty. According to Vogel, Polo documented these aspects of Mongol Chinese culture in greater detail than any other of his time. This is a hint (暗示) that Polo relied on his own powers of observation.

Will we ever know whether Marco Polo traveled to China? Perhaps not, but the consequences of his real or fictional journey are still felt across the globe. One reader of The Travels of Marco Polo was Christopher Columbus, who stepped upon the New World while following his idols footsteps.

【1】France Wood doubted Marco Polo’s travel’s to China because his description ________.

A. missed some important culture of China

B. covered so much about traders’ life

C. was full of obvious mistakes

D. seemed less detailed

2Vogel’s trust on Marco Polo is based on the argument that ________.

a. The Great Wall didnt gain its importance then

b. Records in the Yuan Dynasty mentioned Polo

c. Polo mentioned the currency and salt

d. Polo’s other works are believable

e. Polo recorded what he saw in great detail

A. a, b, dB. a, c, dC. a, e D. b, c

【题目】阅读理解
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A 、B 、C 和 D )中,选出最佳选项。

In 1841, a book was published which astonished the world. It was called “Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan”. The author John Loud Stephens had just returned from a long, difficult and dangerous journey through the thick rain forest of southern Mexico and Guatemala. He had once been there with Frederick Catherwood, an architect and artist, to search for the remains of a lost civilization known as the Mayas(玛雅). Very little was known about the Mayas at that time, but Catherwood's drawing in the book showed incredible cities with temples, pyramids and other buildings as impressive as those of their northern neighbors, the Aztecs. These cities, however, were deserted. The inhabitants(居民) had disappeared almost a thousand years before.
Since that time, far more has been learned about this remarkable civilization. The Mayas had a highly-developed system of government and of agriculture, as well as an incredibly accurate system of measuring time. They were also wonderful engineers capable of moving huge blocks stone long distances and cutting them to accurate shapes and sizes.
And yet although the Mayas knew about the wheel, they never used it. Neither did they use metals other than copper. What is ever more surprising is that they suddenly abandoned many of their cities and built new ones in the jungle. Some time around AD 900, Mayan civilization collapsed(崩溃). By the year 1200, their last great capital, Chichen Itza, was deserted.
Who were these strange people and the even stranger gods they worshipped? What brought about their sudden and mysterious collapse? Some writers have tried to prove that the Mayas had contact with visitors from space and even that they themselves came from another planet. Some people believe that their civilization came to an end because the Mayas never developed a proper resistance to local germs and diseases. All we really know is that when the first Europeans appeared off their coast in 1517, this great and mysterious culture was only a memory.
(1)Stephen's book astonished the world because .
A.it was the first time people heard about Mayas
B.the Mayas were excellent builders and farmers
C.he had experienced so may difficulties to find this lost civilization
D.it described that the Mayas used to be an advanced civilization
(2)One of the most surprising findings about Mayas was that .
A.they developed accurate system measuring time
B.they knew how to build pyramids with stones
C.they deserted their cities and moved to new ones
D.they built cities which they never lived in
(3)At last Mayas disappeared from the world most probably in .
A.a thousand years before 1841
B.around AD 900
C.any year between 1200 and 1517
D.1200
(4)What brought about Mayan sudden collapse?
A.Tropical germs and diseases.
B.European conquest.
C.Mysterious force from outer space.
D.No one knows for sure.

Honesty play an important role in our daily life. It is not only the best policies, but a principle of dealing with affairs. Take the friendship for example. If you are honest man, your friends will be honest to you on return. When you are sad, he will comfort you; when you were in trouble, they will help you. However, if you are a dishonest man, and your friends will leave you alone sooner or late. What’s worse, you will be looked down upon by them and regard as a public enemy. In short, honesty is very important in our daily life. Honesty is absolute essential for a good and happy life.

Many kids dont drink enough water daily, according to a new study. The studys lead author, Erica Kenney, at first planned to look into the amount of sugary drinks kids were drinking in schools. However, during her research she found that many kids were simply not drinking enough water.

Kenney and her team examined data from a group of 4,000 children, aged 6 to19. The data was taken from the National Health and Nutrition Survey, a study on the health of children in the United States done each year by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

While looking through the survey results, she noticed that more than half of the kids who took part in the study were dehydrated (脱水的). Of that group, boys were 76% more likely than girls not to have enough water in their system. Nearly one quarter of the kids in the survey reported drinking no plain water at all.

These findings highlight (突出) a possible health issue that wasnt given a lot of attention in the past, Kenney said in a statement. Even though for most of these kids this is not an immediate and great health risk, this is an issue that could really be reducing quality of life and well-being for many children and youth.

The United States-National Agriculture Library says average kids need between 10 to 14 cups of water every day. This water can come from a mix of drinks and foods that contain high amounts of water, such as celery, melons or tomatoes. It is also suggested that fluids (液体) come from water instead of sugary drinks that are high in calories and can lead to weight problems.

【1】What was Erica Kenneys purpose in doing the study?

A. To study if kids drink enough water daily.

B. To prove that sugary drinks are harmful to kids

C. To show what kind of sugary drinks kids love.

D. To find out how many sugary drinks kids drink at school.

【2】According to the findings of Erica Kenneys study, we know that ________.

A. school kids cannot find drinkable water easily

B. boys are more likely to get dehydrated than girls

C. sugary drinks are very popular with school kids

D. most kids know the importance of drinking plain water

【3】From the last paragraph we learn that kids________.

A. should drink plain water to lose weight

B. can try to take in water from sugary drinks

C. can eat celery, melons and tomatoes for water

D. should drink no more than 10 cups of water every day

【4】The text mainly tells us that many kids __________.

A. dont like drinking water

B. prefer sugary drinks to water

C. are at risk of health problems

D. dont drink enough water daily
